About the Author

very good collection, issues with seller

Pros:

Good stories, a great insight to historic comics of the 60's, and a nice thing for any comic collector to own

Cons:

Pages printed out of order(At least for my copy)

Pages 17 and 18 are switched, even though the numbers are in the right order. My only guess is that the numbers were printed before hand, and they printed the comic on the wrong side of each page. If I can get this resolved quickly, I'll boost it to a 5 star rating.

Retrospect

Reading Fritz the Cat after so many years, I was struck by how misogynistic and creepy R. Crumb is. There are some aspects of the stories that accurately reflect the time period, the drawings are still brilliant of course, and there is no arguing the influence Crumb has had on our culture in general. Having said that, Crumb no longer holds the seat of honor in my heart that he once did.

Good book. Kind of tedious towards the end

It's a good book in the sense it updates what Sun Tzu taught before. However it delved into tediously going over the specifics of just about everything, unlike Tzu who taught and moved on.

Good translation, interesting history --

-- but I found Macchiavelli's content frankly disappointing. The translation is modern and readable, I have no problem with that. The original was centuries behind Sun Tzu's book of the same name, even though Sun Tzu wrote around 500BC, 2000 years before Macchiavelli. Macchiavelli gives a bit of advice about soldierly temperament and training. There's also a brief checklist, just two pages, of strategic advice, near the end of the book. That's all that really has lasting value.

The bulk of the text is taken up with the right way to position each kind of soldier and arm, rank and file, in marching order. Basically, these were detailed directions for a military parade, suited to the set-piece wars of the time, as much pageant as combat. He also goes on about the right kinds of pennants, flags, and colors to use, proper military music, how to make camp, and proper pillaging and distribution of booty.

Directions on how to make camp are subject to errors, though: a measurement 1360 feet long, minus 100 feet at each end, is said to leave a row 1260 feet long rather than 1160 - perhaps an error introduced by the translator, but I tend to think not. He also takes the "reduction" and sacking of conquered towns for granted. I think Master Sun was a bit more merciful (or prgamatic), on the grounds that the wealth of newly annexed parts of the kingdom should be preserved, and the citizens kept happy enough for easy rule. With a startling lack of foresight, Macchiavelli dismisses serious use of artillery in pitched battles. Instead, he falls back on strategies of the Greeks and Romans, 1000 to 2000 years old even when he wrote. Sun Tzu's warfare had a much more modern look to it, including hit-and-run tactics that the West barely understood until the American revolution.

The quality of the translation worth four or five stars, partly because of helpful notes and diagrams. It's the original work that I found weak.

Educated in chemistry and biochemical imbalances and recovered from a horrendous case of altered mental status, I knew what to look for regarding "mental illness." Most psychiatric patients have abnormal lab test results, but they don't know it. Unable to pinpoint the cause of abnormal lab results, doctors commonly diagnose ADHD or a mental disorder. But an abnormal lab result means that a person is suffering from an abnormal physical state. The altered physical state can change mental status. Caffeine allergy, caffeine poisoning, and adrenaline allergy and poisoning, all hidden conditions, all discussed in my book, change normal brain function.

Excellent information on a secret world wide epidemic!

This is an excellent book! There is so much described here which I can immediately relate to. I had eliminated caffeine from my diet a few weeks prior to a internet search revealing this book. It confirms many issues which my doctor left unanswered. I had previously asked him if there was such a thing as caffeine allergy, and he replied,"No". I still knew there was something about caffeine. Why did soft drink manufacturers substitute cocaine with caffeine? Why do they put it there in the first place? Because it is an addictive drug which keeps you coming back for more, much like cigarettes and other "hard drugs". What makes a drug "hard" anyway? Is it because it is way too obvious to slip past most people? Just a few things do think about while you wait for your copy to arrive!

Such a good book!!!

This book is so so good. I am allergic to caffeine and this book is so informative. It's also so great to know that other people have been though what I have. Most people have no idea what it is like to have a caffeine allergy...for awhile I really thought I might be going crazy. I've been caffeine free for almost two years and can't believe how different mentally and physically I am. If you think you might have an allergy or just want to learn a little more about mental disorders (and the potential cause behind them) this is the book for you!

Michael Reeves serves as senior associate pastor and director of strategic resources at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas. Prior to this, he was president and chief executive officer of the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana. As senior consultant with two national stewardship consulting firms, Reeves designed and directed more than 200 capital campaigns. He holds an MA in Religious Education and a PhD in both Church Administration and Foundations of Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Reeves is also an N.S.F.R.E. Certified Fund Raising Executive.
