Great Book!

We got this book to use for our BIG EVENT at church (vacation Bible school). We are doing Group's Egypt theme and this had LOTS of great ideas to use. It has simple projects for younger kids and more in depth projects for older kids. Great history and pictures. Worth the purchase.

excellent ancient egyptian resource
By Kelly
We checked out every Egyptian craft book from our library for a homeschool unit (grade 5, and this was among the top 3 that we actually used. The projects in this book are not cute crafts like in many of the other books; they can be used to really help understand the history. Our favorite project in this book was the "wesekh collar." The book actually gives a lot of background information about jewelry and beads and shows examples other than the project, so you get a feel for the variety that existed. I love that the book makes an attempt to replicate actual objects while still using readily available materials. While the book suggested plastic beads and copper wire, we used stone beads and that led to a whole discussion about what types of metals, minerals and gems might have been available to the egyptians.

The book also has the best "papyrus paper" instructions for simulating papyrus. It is the only book that I found that used thin strips laid in an overlapping weave, which illustrates the process rather than the end result. (There are many videos on the web that show papyrus being made - pretty cool to watch before starting this project!)

Most of the projects in this book would be best suited to kids 9 and up. Younger kids would most likely need some assistance. My 7 year-old did many of the projects with us and did need help.

For anyone looking for additional resources that are more than toilet paper tube arm cuffs and construction paper collars, I suggest you also try:
Make History: Ancient Egypt : Re-Create Authentic Jewelry, Toys, and Other Crafts from Another Place and Time (Make History)

Spend the Day in Ancient Egypt: Projects and Activities That Bring the Past to Life (Spend The Day Series)

and if cooking is your thing
Cooking in Ancient Civilizations (The Greenwood Press Daily Life Through History Series) is awesome (but pricey), especially if you will also be studying other ancients like the Greeks and Romans. We held a "feast day" at the end of our unit and the kids loved the food! They are now asking for these recipes again!

Great book; DIFFICULT crafts
By M. Heiss
We are doing a summer homeschool unit on ancient Egypt, and the book we used for the majority of our crafts was Kaleidoscope Kids "Pyramids!". We checked this Carmela Van Vleet book out of the library, but the crafts were way above the skill level of my kids. This would be better for older (junior high? high school?) kids. I like my children to work on their craft projects without a lot of help from Mom, but thecrafts in this book were very parent-intensive.

Also, most of the crafts required uncommon items -- 2 cups of sawdust, for example, or grated beeswax, or a long straight tree branch cut into five equal lengths. See what I mean? Better for big kids (with a big budget).

Great vocabulary words on every topic; very good glossary; good index.

Veterinary Embryology, 2nd Edition, has been updated to reflect the many changes that have developed both in an improved understanding of molecular features of embryology and in the rapid advances in the manipulation of embryonic cells, particularly stem cells. The text is written by an expert team, all of whom have extensive experience in the teaching of veterinary embryology and cognate subjects.

Now in full-colour throughout, the text provides information relevant to many subjects taught in preclinical, paraclinical and clinical years of veterinary programmes. Early chapters describe and explain sequential events relating to the division, growth and differentiation of cells and to the formation of foetal membranes, implantation and placentation. Succeeding chapters trace the origin, growth, development and maturation of the major body systems. Age determination of the embryo and foetus is reviewed, as are the genetic, chromosomal and environmental factors which adversely affect pre-natal development. Four new chapters have been added, covering historical aspects of embryology, stem cells, embryo mortality in domestic species and assisted reproductive technologies used in domestic animals.

A reading list at the end of each chapter offers additional sources of information, and tables, flow diagrams and numerous hand-drawn illustrations – used extensively to explain organogenesis and system development – support the concepts presented in the text.

Employability: Tips for a Brighter Future (Volume 1), by Mr Patrick Richard Cross

Most full time, part time and adult students have decided to spend an enormous amount of their time on academic and vocational courses in order to increase their chances of pursuing a rewarding career. Such rewards may be financial, job satisfaction, self-fulfilment or for community spirit. In any case, their ultimate success depends not only on their qualification certificate but also on their ability to engage with their audiences in communication and writing. One “acid test” is usually at an interview where their employability is judged on many elements, one of which is the ability to communicate effectively. Increased chances of employability are not always realised through just having strong academic qualifications, but also having the “soft skills” of communicating and the confidence in the appropriate use and application of some basic terms and words used in the workplace, whether it be academic or operational. The first part of the book illustrates some typical job advertisements where many key words and phrases can be found. It is important that job applicants can highlight such key words and phrases and fully understand and apply these key words as they could easily form a basis of questions posed by the interviewer. The second part of the book offers explanations and supporting examples for the many common terms and words used in studies and the operational workplace. Some of these terms and words can be confusing and if used out of context can be misleading and ultimately causing a waste of time and effort. The style of this publication is to present simple explanations and simple examples of the appropriate application of such terms and key words. This will benefit the reader and allow them to more fully understand, appreciate and more effectively apply these words in either their studies and/or in the workplace. It will also allow the reader to better appreciate and understand the specialist books and publications. This publication is as a result of the author’s experiences in lecturing over ten years and many of these explanations have been used in class to support lecture content and the learning process of students. Some 200 key words will form the basis of this publication which are commonly used in studies and the operational workplace. Also included are some basic management tools and techniques such as S.W.O.T., P.E.S.T.L.E., the Loyalty Ladder, Blooms Ladder, etc. Knowledge and understanding of these tools and techniques will help the student and the reader to apply more effectively solutions to either case study scenarios or real work situations. Each word described will be followed with a Quiz question/exercise so the student can test their learning. Answers are provided at the rear of the book. With more and more students enrolling on Management based courses where the delivery language is English, but the student’s first language is not English, there is a risk that the connection is not made between some key words and terms and their effective application in both academic arenas and the workplace. There is also the need to address falling standards of literacy. This publication offers help and guidance to improve standards of literacy. For students returning to study later in life, this publication will allow em to revisit terminology that they may have used, but may have forgotten. For each word, there is a description of what the word means and what other words it can be confused with, in order to highlight the differences. The words are presented as “doing words”; i.e. verbs and not nouns in order to emphasis working processes and not events. To underpin the knowledge and understanding of key words, there is at the end of each section, a Quiz which will allow the reader to apply their improved understanding. These Quizzes are one of four types, namely calculations, tasks, questions or research based.

Wexford's first case - revisited
By Phillip O.
Rendell's second Wexford novel may appear a bit dated but it is easy to see the great writer that she was becoming. This book (released as "A New Lease of Death" in the U.S.) is taut, excellently plotted, fully characterized and full of descriptive settings. Wexford lovers may be surprised to find that he really plays a minor part in this book. A pastor by the name of Henry Archery wants to clear the name of the guilty party in Wexford's first case. Archery's daughter is engaged to his son and heaven forbid, there can't be any bad blood being introduced into the family. Archery second-guesses Wexford's work on the case and attempts to find out what really happened. Thus the bulk of the book follows the arrogant Archery and his equally smarmy son as they attempt to clear the name of the fiancée. Inspector Burden also plays a significant part here, even more so than Wexford. Wexford is described as a bit gruff and uncouth in this novel, a few characterizations she toned down for him in subsequent books.

Not sure if I enjoyed it as much
By Teri Zumwalt
I have read many Ruth Rendell books, and thought this one a little different from the rest. It felt as if Inspector Wexford was taking a back seat to the character who is searching for the truth in an old murder. This reason for investigation is quickly explained-his son is to marry the murderer's daughter, and he must either come to grips with that fact or, preferably, find that the convicted man was wrongly found guilty. Told from another's perspective, Inspector Wexford was a somewhat lesser character in the story line. Not sure if I enjoyed it as much, but I loved, as usual, the many different characters she describes, and their roles in the story line. She is able to provide great descriptions, so I am able to envision each person, how they look, their mannerisms, their quirky traits.
I enjoyed this book, and there was a sufficient twist in the end to make it a true Ruth Rendell.

A nice escape from reality
By Romancing the Book

In order to receive the grant funding she needs to save the community center, Gwendolyn Sinclair agrees to spend a week with Xavier St. James. Author Naima Simone introduces an adult version of a beloved fairy tale in Bargain With the Beast. Above all, it is a love story featuring a proud, wounded hero whose emotional scars are directly tied to his physical scars.

Paired with Xavier is Gwendolyn, a strong female character who fights to reach the man deep inside the outer layer of protection. Xavier hides behind power and money, which makes him incredibly appealing as a fix-up project for Gwen.

The story line integrates plenty of humor as the author explores the limits of a relationship between the two characters. What starts as a business deal gets rather complicated when feelings become involved.

Because the two characters have such a strong connection, their encounters are spicy hot. Although some of the descriptions caused me to have some doubts (comparing apportion of the male anatomy to a plum), I found the writing style to be engaging.

A familiar story line coupled with adult themes makes this appealing for any reader needing a short escape from reality.

Xavier Can Be My Beast!
By Shirley13
Naima Simone can remake a fairy tale like no other! This is a modern day Beauty and the Beast. Xavier and Gwen were childhood friends and grew up together with Xaviers younger brother Josh.
After a series of tragedies, Josh dieing and then years later an accident killing their father and disfiguring Xavier, they have grown apart.
Xavier is bitter and resentful and walls himself off. Gwen is trying to save their beloved community center they all met at as childhood friends. When she aporoaches him and asks for a donation, he offers her a proposition that she grudgingly accepts.
Can this beauty tame this beast? Can their love conquer all? Love this book and this adaptation of one of my favorite timeless tales!

The Fireman, by Joe Hill

Dragonscale is a terrifying new plague. A highly contagious, deadly spore imprints its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies—before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected. There is no cure. No one is safe.

Nurse Harper Grayson has discovered the telltale gold-flecked designs on her skin. When the outbreak first began, she and her husband, Jakob, made a pact that they would take matters into their own hands if they became infected. But now Harper wants to live…until the fetus she is carrying comes to term.

Convinced that his wife has made him sick, Jakob abandons her as their placid New England community collapses in terror. The chaos gives rise to armed, self-appointed posses roaming the streets and woods to exterminate those who carry the spore. But a stranger in a firefighter’s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he is afflicted with Dragonscale but has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted...and as a weapon to avenge the wronged.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of May 2016: I admit, when I hit a saggy part in a story, I do skip ahead to see if the plot will pick up again. At no point in Joe Hill’s doorstop-weight novel did I have that urge, for each and every page had me entranced. Set in New Hampshire right about now, The Fireman opens with a man spontaneously combusting outside the office of school nurse Harper Grayson. He’s not the first victim of Draco incendia trychophyton, the spore responsible for this transformation, but he’s the signal that Dragonscale has spread to Harper’s small town. It also spreads to Harper soon after she realizes she’s pregnant. Highly contagious and 100 percent fatal, Dragonscale soon plunges the world into chaos. (An oddly affective moment is when Harper logs onto Google and finds, instead of the search engine, the words “Goodby.”) But Hill smartly focuses on Harper and her attempts at survival, keeping the stakes small but extremely personal as the uninfected hunt down and murder the infected, supposedly to protect the rest of the town but really to indulge in sociopathic tendencies now unleashed. The Fireman starts with a hot burn, simmers as Harper joins a group of infected hiding in a summer camp, and then heats up again as the near-utopian community ruptures. Hill weaves questions about the power of leadership, group-think, love, catastrophe, and family into the plot. His smartest move is to give no clear-cut answers to these questions, making The Fireman more substantial and real than a typical apocalyptic thriller. And his humdinger of an ending provides just the right closure. --Adrian Liang

From Publishers Weekly
In Hill's superb supernatural thriller, the world is falling apart in a maelstrom of flame and fury. A spore dubbed Dragonscale infects people, draws patterns on their skin, and eventually makes them spontaneously combust—and it's rapidly spreading. School nurse Harper Grayson volunteers at a local hospital in Concord, N.H., until it burns down. Soon she discovers that not only is she infected but she's also pregnant. As the beautiful filigreed markings of Dragonscale start to flourish on her body, she vows to do anything to bring her baby safely into the world. Her husband, Jakob, doesn't want the baby and attacks Harper when he realizes she wants to keep it. Harper flees and encounters John Rookwood, a near-mythical figure known as the Fireman. He takes her to Camp Wyndham, where the infected have learned to control and harness what they call the Bright—the flames that smolder just beneath their skin. Harper finds purpose there, but Jakob has found a purpose too: he's joined the Cremation Crews, brutal marauders who kill the infected on sight. When the peace of the camp is threatened, Harper, John, and their friends band together. The good-hearted Harper is a captivating heroine, the peaceful eye in a storm of evil that threatens to harm everyone she holds dear, and it's impossible not to root for her. Hill has followed 2013's NOS4A2 with a tremendous, heartrending epic of bravery and love set in a fully realized and terrifying apocalyptic world, where hope lies in the simplest of gestures and the fullest of hearts. (May)\n

From School Library Journal
America is burning—people and entire cities are going up in flames, thanks to a spore called Dragonscale that is infecting humans worldwide. Nurse Harper Grayson is in her element trying to help the afflicted at the local hospital, but when she becomes infected around the same time she discovers she is pregnant, her husband goes insane and tries to kill her. Harper escapes and finds refuge with other infected people at a rural camp. With the help of The Fireman (a mysterious man who can shoot fire from his fingertips) and others, Harper discovers the cause of Dragonscale and how to control it. While this entry is not as scary as Hill's Horns or Heart-Shaped Box, the horror of mob mentality will remind teens of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, and the author's father Stephen King's The Stand. With likable characters, glib dialogue, suspense, and inevitable doom, the book feels like a popular television series script, and teens will appreciate the pop culture references—Harry Potter, Narnia, The Walking Dead, Mary Poppins, and more. VERDICT An apocalyptic tale for fans of suspense and horror, even though the long length will deter reluctant readers.—Sarah Hill, Lake Land College, Mattoon, IL

Flashes of Brilliance Amid a Curiously Slow and Predictable Plot
By Joe Terrell
The Fireman squanders a great premise (a spontaneous combustion plague) with some curious pacing issues. The first act is wonderful as author Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) explores society's downfall with some ingenious pop culture references (Glenn Beck AND J.K. Rowling bite the dust in this one). However, once our protagonist - a pregnant nurse infected with the dragonscale - finds safe haven in a cult-like camp of other infected individuals, the plot grinds to a halt.

At 750 pages, The Fireman is a big book. Unfortunately, about 400 of those pages are spent slowly revealing that the camp is not as safe as it seems (something fairly obvious to the reader the moment our protagonist is welcomed into "The Bright.")

There are some interesting ideas and scenes here - for example, the "Cremation Crews" made up of uninfected men are scouring the blasted landscape looking to exterminate anyone infected with dragonscale, a deliciously tense ambulance heist sequence, and a wickedly dark reveal at the end of the novel - but unfortunately, just not enough seems to happen to justify this novel's length (a criticism ironically often lobbed at King's work). And the characters don't seem to grow and evolve as much as have backstory monologues at the appropriate times in the narrative.

Joe Hill is an awesome writer (his novel NOS4A2 is a seriously great and inventive horror novel), but The Fireman commits the cardinal sin of apocalyptic plague novels - it gets boring.

Not Joe Hill's best!
By JH
I have enjoyed Joe Hill's work to date but this novel really didn't impress me (it looks like I'm in the minority though).

I don't like reviews that give too much of the book away, so I'll try to keep it brief.

It has an interesting idea at its core but I really felt it was poorly executed:
- the book could have been much shorter.. it could have been a far better read if it had been tightened up;
- some of the dialogue was cringe-worthy.. people just don't speak like that;
- the characters were very one dimensional;
- there were a number of occasions where the continuity didn't hold and the author had to backtrack to cover off something that had not been established earlier.

Hill said the book was written over 4 years and I think this shows. The style, to, me seems to change from time to time and the way the characters talk to each other seems to chop and change.

All in all I'd say it felt like a bit of a mess.

I was very disappointed in this book
By brett buckner
Wow ... such high hopes. I was very disappointed in this book. The premise sounded promising - a virus that cause people to burst into flames - and the opening chapter was riveting. But after that Hill's story progresses at a snail's pace. I was most disappointed because I'd enjoyed all of his other novels immensely. It's unfair to add that he's Stephen King's son, but that being the case is partly why my expectations were so high (though I've had something of a love/hate relationship with his offerings over the past few years).
Honestly, the worst thing I can say about this book is that it was boring, and in the end, I didn't really care who lived or died. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters. I can't help but feel like this book could have benefited mightily from a better editor who could trim it down from 600-plus pages to 300.
