Couldn't put it down

My daughter came in the kitchen to see when dinner was going to be ready and I had to tell her that I was at 85% and she was just going to have to wait! This book started where book 2 left me horribly hanging, and gave me the satisfaction I needed! You really feel Joe's (and Lauren's) pain and frustration and I think that is one reason you just can't stop reading. You know the only way to stop the panic is to find out what happens! Joe and Lauren are so real, and the scenery descriptions are so detailed, I could actually "see" their journey in my mind. Looking forward to book #4!
It was a great way to spend the day... even though dinner was a bit late!

Joe Tyler is back - and just as driven and unforgiving as you have known him to be. Jeff Shelby delivers another consuming read full of intense emotion that will draw you along side this gritty ex-cop in pursuit of his missing daughter kidnapped a decade ago. Beware the wrath of Joe Tyler.....

A Must for Every Student in the Nursing Field

Last semester, I used Fundamental Success, which helped tremendously. I went from "C" to "A". Therefore, I decided to buy this other one. Given that the nursing program is very intense, it can be very difficult to read through all the materials. "Med -Surg Success" covers the entire chapters in the form of NClex questions. It is better than the text bank. The author of the book gives a rationale for every question, even the wrong ones. At the end of every chapter, there is an exam style questionnaire! I noticed that if you can answer the majority of those questions correctly, it will not only give you a better understanding of the topic, but YOU WILL PASS THE TEST in your class. I realized that there are always quite a few questions (or similar) from this book that comes to the exam.
Honestly, if you can only afford one extra book from your text book, this will be the one to take. I hope that it will be helpful to others as it is for me.

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy—-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots—-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Despite the glitzy title, this is one of the more appealing diet books among the new "anti-carb" programs. Agatston, a doctor based at Miami Beach's Mt. Sinai Medical Center, found that his patients not only were unable to stay on various popular diets but their cholesterol and blood sugar levels remained dangerously high after trying these plans. The doctor chose to alter his own diet-first avoiding all carbohydrates and fruit and then reintroducing these foods in moderation. Feeling better and losing weight, he then consulted a nutritionist to modify his strategy to devise a sound method for his patients. The South Beach diet begins with a somewhat restrictive two-week program, generally producing a weight loss of from eight to 13 pounds. The initial phase may be difficult for those who crave bread, pasta and fruit. But there are still choices, and snacks (cheese, hummus, vegetables) are a necessary part of the diet. People shouldn't feel hungry on this part of the diet, stresses the author. The second phase offers somewhat more choices, including whole wheat bread and other selected carbohydrates. Agatston advocates combining the "bad" with the "good." For example, take whole wheat bread and dip it into olive oil, rather than using butter. Eat a very small amount of pasta with lots of vegetables, meat and healthy oils. Complete meal plans along with simple recipes comprise roughly half the book. Of course, there's no perfect diet that works for everyone but the enthusiasm of the conversational tone and the inviting manner make the book more appealing than many other diet tomes.

Not hard to follow and full of common sense....

This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar.
There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.
A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)
This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats.
This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

OK but there are better ones out there

Compared to other books this one contains too much "fluff" or in other words success stories. I like a little more science thats why I recommend THE GREAT CHOLESTEROL MYTH by Jonny Boden and Dr Sinatra instead if your only going to get one book on healthy living.

The South Beach Diet is similar to Dr Adkins diet except a little more lenient. Dr Adkins book is also a good read also again with a lot of and a strict plan to go with it. All three books mentioned attack Carbs as the real problem. These books have plans that really work but the key is to make any diet sustainable over the long run (the rest of your life). Another good Book is EAT FAT GET THIN. The appeal of this book is the title I think. I can only recommend the other books I mentioned.

Simple, delicious meals with this cookbook

If you're not careful, you might mistake this for a regular cookbook rather than a diet one. My wife, who is not on a diet, has been enjoying these recipes as well. There's a wonderful variety in here. The recipes are simple and easy to fix. I like how each recipe is clearly marked to indicate the corresponding phase. Some miss the mark, but the majority are right on target. There's a heavy emphasis on flavor.

Garbage

I expected more out of this book, considering that it is Barron's. However, this book proved to be one of the brand's rare missteps.

Many of the questions in the reading comprehension section either don't make sense or don't accurately represent the types of questions in the real SAT. I was shocked to see that answers to some of the questions didn't even appear in the passage! I remember coming across a question which asked you to define what a certain term meant. Even with the context, it was impossible to answer it without having a background knowledge of that subject. The author clearly failed to realize that all answers to questions must appear in the passage.

Though the reading comprehension section of this book is complete garbage, the sentence completion section stands out. The questions in that section are generally harder than those found in the real SAT, but they make good practice tools to help you correctly answer those last two difficult sentence completion questions that appear in each critical reading section. To supplement this section, the book comes without a list of words that have frequently appeared in the past SATs. Most of the words were pretty basic, but they definitely did help me clearly define those words that sounded awfully familiar but which I didn't know their exact meanings.

I would not recommend buying this book solely for the sentence completion section. It's not worth the money. I would invest just a few more dollars to get the Barron's full SAT book (the 24th, 25th, or 26th edition), which are far, far better than this mediocre book.

Extremely dissapointing

I got this book expecting it to be a harder version of the regular test section, much like Barron's does for all their books. This book has passages that are either too long, or their questions are too vague. On the regular college board or even Kaplan practice tests (which are good for CR), the questions are concise (i.e in like 5-6).. Barron's does not have this. It is crap. EXCEPT...EXCEPT for the sentence completions. If you need help with sentence completions go for this, the practice is really good and realistic.

The reading passages never helped me.Instead,it makes me frustrated because the answers sometimes cant be directly found in the passage,or they don't make sense at all.Anyway 800 vocabularies are good to know!

About the Author
Mark Nixon is the Professor in Computer Vision at the University of Southampton UK. His research interests are in image processing and computer vision. His team develops new techniques for static and moving shape extraction which have found application in biometrics and in medical image analysis. His team were early workers in automatic face recognition, later came to pioneer gait recognition and more recently joined the pioneers of ear biometrics. With Tieniu Tan and Rama Chellappa, their book Human ID based on Gait is part of the Springer Series on Biometrics and was published in 2005. He has chaired/ program chaired many conferences (BMVC 98, AVBPA 03, IEEE Face and Gesture FG06, ICPR 04, ICB 09, IEEE BTAS 2010) and given many invited talks. Dr. Nixon is a Fellow IET and a Fellow IAPR.

Unavoidable book for Image Processing Scientists and Lecturers

This is lovely book. As a PhD student, I have been looking for a solution to a problem in image processing for 3 months but when I got this book it solved most of my problems. In fact, my PhD supervisor even liked the book. I strongly , without any forms of reservation, recommend this book for people working in image analysis and pattern recognition. The MATLAB codes in the book are also detailed and explanatory.

Good book!!!

I haven't yet read the whole book but I've found so far what I need to give this book a good rating. It has a good balance between the mathematical background and practical implementations. Furthermore, when the theory is not well covered the proper references to the original papers or books are given. I like it!!!

Good as a handbook for image processing and low-level computer vision.

This book covers recent topics, as well as classical ones, in image processing and low-level computer vision. Its coverage is broad and extensive, which is very difficult to achieve in these fast developing research fields.

However, it is better as a handbook for experts, rather than as a textbook for students. Notations are not consistent across chapters or sections, and some of them are quite weird. For example, v, v', v'' denote trajectory, velocity and acceleration in the discussion of curvature. I would prefer p, v, a. Also, a few equations contain errors, which inexperienced students cannot find easily.

There are too many errors and some paragraphs are simply not understandable. The book needs serious editing.

informative introduction to North Korea through its capital

This is a remarkably well-written book works on both the level of a pictorial city guide and as political geography. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang was effectively flattened during the Korean War (1950-53) and its rebuilding reflected a series of political choices from what sorts of activities to locate in the capital to what kind of architectural design, materials, and construction techniques to employ. Springer mines this intersection of cityscape and political history beautifully, and it is hard to imagine anyone who would not learn something new from reading this book.

Pretty good book

I like this book, it came in excellent shape and within a week. It was more of a tourist picture book; it didn't actually have much information about life in Pyongyang, just pictures and explanations. But overall it was a pretty good book.

In 1856 William Dove, a young tenant farmer, was tried and executed for the poisoning of his wife Harriet. Owen Davies is a lecturer in History, University of Hertfordshire. His many publications include, Cunning-Folk: Popular Magic in English History (2003) Witchcraft, magic and culture 1736-1951 (1999) and A People Bewitched: Witchcraft and Magic in Nineteenth-Century Somerset (1999).� He has also written numerous articles on the same subject in various history and folklore journals.

Fascinating Book in Many Ways

This book will be great for people interested in many topics, from English jurisprudence, the insanity defense, cunning-folk, early methodism, to the nascent fear inducing media, it has a lot to recommend it. One of Mr. Davies better books.

True Picture of the Cunning Folk

One thing I like about writers like Owen Davies is that they give you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. A true story documented during Mid -Victorian times in Leeds, England involving a murder case. Nothing unusual bout a murder case except this one involved religion and the presence of a wizard or a cunning man.

William Dove was the son of a well to do Methodist currier named Christopher Dove. The family was quit well known in the community and they had solid reputation to bank on. William was sort of a black sheep of the family. Showing signs of erratic behavior at an early age, he would torture animals and kill them in extremely painful acts of torture. He was would inflict sadistic pain on other people. His father had tried to help young William in a variety of ways but William performed poorly in school and he never listened to the teacher he was apprenticed under. When people spoke with him they swore they were speaking with a dim wit. As a last ditch measure his father rented him a farm in hope of finding some salvation for his wayward son.

William did a horrible running the farm and he made a series of crazy and erratic decisions. The farm did not make money . During his time for running the farm William met Harriet and married her. Despite William being unstable the family felt it was a good match to be united with the Dove family. Harriet was prone to fits of hysteria especially after her brother died. Her years with William were not easy. Often times he was cruel to her , he had a drinking problem and he did not maintain stable employment. Since the farm was not making money the owner of the farm decided he would not renew the leas with William Dove.

It was at this point in life that William fell in with cunning man or bitterly known as a wizard. Back in those days Wizards would call themselves doctors or dentist as back then any fool could do so as there was no regulation. Many people would subscribe to cunning folk owing to desperate life situation. Many of the better educated felt that Cunning -Folk were deceiving and dishonest people who took advantage of people. Some phrenologist even stted that the part of the brain responsible for honesty and noble behavior was smaller in cunning folk then it was in normal people. They were master deceivers. Henry Harrison convinced William tht his magic would save the farm, predict his fathers death and also revealed that Harriet his first wife would die and he would later remarry and be happy.

The first predication did not come true. The second one did The third ..... William used strychnine to poison his wife. He believed he could get away with it. He did not. Prior to being hung he confessed his guilty and tried to spin some o the guilt on Henry Harrison. William Dove was tried I a time of transition for Great. Britain. Debate swirled over insanity pleas, the effect of religion and the humaneness of using the death penalty. Henry Harrison would later get his come uppance after being accused of rape . He was sentenced to prison but not death. After that he faded into history.

For those wanting to study witchcraft or magic it would be well to note that many of these magicians were not Wiccan with the reed "Harm Ye None' In fact they took advantage of vulnerable ad desperate people. These guys were shady con man and they did not worship the lord and lady nor did they work with the old gods. In fact several called on new testament figure including the devil himself.

I've read several e-books written by this author and she knows her stuff. Jeannette Maw's application of LOA to the topic of money is brilliant. In this e-book she clearly articulates several specific ways the reader can begin to think about money differently. Her ideas on how to stop making money responsible for how I feel are things I am excited to try immediately. The real-life personal examples she uses to describe the flow of money make perfect sense and seem so spot on... yet before reading this, I had never realized exactly how I was pushing money away. So nice to find such an easy, brilliant and ridiculously affordable read on money!
