Great examples and walks you through problems
By CaryPraveen14
I purchased this textbook in late 2009 to study Cost Accounting on my own before I took the actual class. I wanted to learn it just for my own knowledge. I am quite happy with this book and how it goes through example after example, and provides the big picture. This was only $4.00 so an awesome price since textbooks are way overpriced these days.

I learned a lot from this older version than spending a whopping $250 on a newer version with all the "bells and whistles". If you want to save money I suggest going with the older version of the textbook which you can usually get for under $10 on Amazon Marketplace. This is a whole lot better than the new 2013 tax book I just reviewed, for sure! :)

The previous review of this book is entirely inaccurate. The books website does not require an access code, it requires you to read ALL of the instructions on the very first page of the book to figure out how to get to the correct site. The website for this text is incredibly helpful, it contains pre-made flashcards, study guides, outlines, a glossary for each chapter, quizes, powerpoint slides, and the best part... It has all of the presentations set-up with audio available to download directly into itunes so you can load it onto your ipod! I have used this site almost more than I have used the book, and the best part is it is FREE!

Good book
By nawesome
I need this book for my cost accounting class, and I think it's pretty decent. It's easy to understand, there are pictures and graphs, and the website for the book is very helpful. However, I think it's kind of simplified and dumbed down, although that could just be the material itself.

Digital Cities: The Internet and the Geography of Opportunity (Oxford Studies in Digital Politics), by Karen Mossberger, Caroline J. Tolbe

In an age when the United Nations has declared access to the Internet a human right, and universal access to high-speed broadband is a national goal, urban areas have been largely ignored by federal policy. The cost of that neglect may well be the failure to realize the social benefits of broadband and a broadly-connected digital society.

Technology offers unparalleled advantages for innovation in urban areas - in the economy, health care, education, energy, transportation, government services, civic engagement, and more. With their density and networks of activity, cities hold the most potential for reaping the benefits of technology. But there are surprisingly substantial disparities in broadband adoption across cities. More puzzlingly, rather than promoting innovation or addressing the high cost of broadband access, the US has mostly funded expensive rural infrastructure in sparsely-populated areas.

Digital Cities tells the story of information technology use and inequality in American metropolitan areas and discusses directions for change. The authors argue that mobile-only Internet, the form used by many minorities and urban poor, is a second-class form of access, as they offer evidence that users with such limited access have dramatically lower levels of online activity and skill. Digital citizenship and full participation in economic, social and political life requires home access. Using multilevel statistical models, the authors present new data ranking broadband access and use in the nation's 50 largest cities and metropolitan areas, showing considerable variation across places. Unique, neighborhood data from Chicago examines the impact of poverty and segregation on access in a large and diverse city, and it parallels analysis of national patterns in urban, suburban and rural areas. Digital Cities demonstrate the significance of place for shaping our digital future and the need for policies that recognize the critical role of cities in addressing both social inequality and opportunity.

Review

"Digital Cities forcefully and persuasively demonstrates how place matters for understanding and addressing the challenges of innovation and inequality. The authors impressively marshal extensive new data and careful analyses to illuminate significant research perspectives and to open crucial policy questions."--William Barnes, National League of Cities

"The authors of Digital Cities argue, convincingly, that current policy shortchanges American cities and thereby innumerable Americans regarding the potential economic and social benefits of digital technologies. Through detailed analyses and interpretation of a wealth of data, Digital Cities offers important fresh insight about who is being left behind, why this matters, and what can be done to rectify the situation."--Eszter Hargittai, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Northwestern University

"Digital Cities is an indispensable guide to what we know about broadband adoption patterns and how they matter to the economic and social development of communities. It is a 'must read' for state, local, and national policymakers."--John B. Horrigan, Vice President, The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies

Amazon.com Review
"That's what 145th Street is like. Something funny happens... and then something bad happens. It's almost as if the block is reminding itself that life is hard, and you have to take it seriously." Walter Dean Myers's book of interconnected short stories is a sweet and sour mix of the comedy and tragedy of the human condition, played out against the backdrop of the Harlem neighborhood that is centered around 145th Street. In this 'hood, teens will become acquainted with the mysterious 12-year-old Angela, whose sad dreams seem to predict the future for an unlucky few, and the fast-talking Jamie Farrell, a smooth basketball player who's praying that his streak of good luck doesn't end before he can ask out Celia Evora, "the finest chick in the school." They will chuckle at the affable Big Joe, who wants to enjoy his funeral party while he's still alive, yet feel their hearts tighten when Big Time Henson senses his drug addiction drawing him closer and closer to an early grave.

Myers frankly discusses the consequences of violence, drive-bys and gang war through his articulate characters, but tempers these episodes with such a love of his fictional community that every character shines through with the hope and strength of a survivor. Changing his point of view from teen to adult and back again through each vignette, Myers successfully builds a bridge of understanding between adolescents and adults that will help each group better understand the problems of the other. A worthy and recommended read that beautifully illustrates the good that can come out of a community that stands together. Newbery Honor-winning Myers has written more than 50 books, including Monster and Fallen Angels. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
In a kind of literary Rear Window, Myers (The Blues of Flats Brown, reviewed above) uses 10 short stories to create snapshots of a pulsing, vibrant community with diverse ethnic threads, through all of its ups and downs. Beginning with the tale of a wry character who stages his own funeral on a sweltering 4th of July to celebrate the money he has received from canceling his life insurance policy, Myers then follows with a chilling story of a cop shootout gone wrong. Many of the stories are told through the voices of witty, intelligent teens; Jamie Farrell, in particular, is a standout as he relates his changing luck in "The Streak" and makes other cameo appearances. But even the more poignant stories told in the third person--such as that of Billy Giles, a middling fighter hired by the local gym to make contenders look good, and "Angela's Eyes," infused with superstition, in which Angela possesses the ability to foresee death and destruction through her late father's eyes--keep an inviting, conversational tone. Myers creates an overall effect of sitting on the front stoop swapping stories of the neighborhood. Most readers will find that they could settle in for hours and take it all in. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-Myers draws upon his experiences growing up in Harlem to create these 10 interconnected stories about a neighborhood inhabited by colorful, memorable characters. Teens figure prominently in these selections, but adults of varying ages also play dominant roles. One of the funniest characters is a fellow named Big Joe, who decides to organize his own funeral while he's still alive to enjoy it. One of the most memorable tales is "Monkeyman," in which a teen stands up to the local gang. A host of other characters come to life. These finely drawn personalities come together in the final story, the celebratory "Block Party-145th Street Style." People in the neighborhood have to put up with crime, police brutality, and poverty, but there are fun times, too. Myers gets a bit sentimental at times, especially in "A Christmas Story," but there's enough balance here among the emotions to make 145th Street a highly enjoyable short-story collection. What one comes away with after reading it is a vivid sense of place and a vibrant feeling of community.

Walter Dean Myers' collection of short stories focuses on the inhabitants of "145th Street" in Harlem. Each story is well-crafted and geared to readers 12 and up; Delacorte Press is the children's branch of Random House Publishers. However, this volume is fine reading for adults as well as children.
The stories share characters, settings, and tone. Myers does an excellent job avoiding bad language while maintaining the vernacular and rhythms of the rich characters that he portrays. Myers has a knack for giving his characters life and credibility. Myers manages to give a sense of adult versus youth dialect in leading us through the concrete realities of Harlem.
Although characters are repeated in the stories, sometimes as background and others as key characters, each story stands on its own and may be read in any order without loss of continuity. In other words, the stories do not build on one another like chapters in a novel.
Each of the ten stories strikes a chord in the reader and "shows" rather than just "tells" you the pressures, fears, and joys of living in the "hood." Human emotion is itself a character throughout the collection and the story lines are expertly constructed to avoid being preachy while relating theme and the moral undercurrent of the human struggle with choices that must be made every day on 145th street.
I particularly enjoyed "Big Joe's Funeral" and "A Christmas Story." Big Joe is a restaurant owner and has his own particular, unique, and large view of what a funeral ought to be about. The Christmas tale delicately balances the spirit of Christmas against the desire of a policeman to separate his personal life from the harshness of the beat he walks.
Every story in this collection is interesting and entertaining. As a sampler, it has whetted my appetite for more of Walter Dean Myers' books. I highly recommend this collection for young or old readers and those who simply appreciate a good story spun by an author with a natural voice.

another coup for the amazing WD Myers
By A Customer
So much attention has been given to Christopher Paul Curtis lately, but it seems to me the prolific work of Walter Dean Myers needs a loud cheering section--so here goes. Two customer reviews, "Another Stunning Work..." and "Good Stories Spun..." give thorough synopses of this anthology. I'll add that my middle schoolers LOVED these stories when I bought the book last spring, and I plan on reading it with my seventh graders later this year too. The stories are combinations of slick, sad, silly, and serious, and therefore one story was able to hook the kids into reading another and another. One 12 year old boy in my class was so intrigued by a character named Peaches--described as "so fine"--that he paid attention to everything else we read from the book hoping she'd turn up again. And she did! Walter Dean Myers just has a keen sense of the world and his gift with words makes reading this, and any, book by him a pleasure.

It Realated![.]
By Taikiayah
I really liked the book because it realated or reminded me of being back home! Back home it seemed like everywhere around where i stayed everybody knew everybody, and thats the way the book was. On 145th street it seemed like everything happened and when it did everybody knew about it! i Also like the book because i like how he makes it sound like we're all sitting around listening to someone tell what happened earlier that day! The stories i really injoyed were Big Joe's funeral, and The Baddest Dog in harlem! I m really loking forward to reading more of his books!

While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. From the Inside Flap
Zuleika Dobson is a highly accomplished and superbly written book whose spirit is farcical," said E. M. Forster. "It is a great work--the most consistent achievement of fantasy in our time . . .
so funny and charming, so iridescent yet so profound."
Originally published in 1911, Max Beerbohm's sparklingly wicked satire concerns the unlikely events that occur when a femme fatale briefly enters the supremely privileged, all-male domain of Judas Col-
lege, Oxford. A conjurer by profession, Zuleika Dobson can only love a man who is impervious to her considerable charms: a circumstance that proves fatal, as any number of love-smitten suitors are driven to suicide by the damsel's rejection. Laced with memorable one-liners ("Death cancels all engagements," utters the first casualty) and inspired throughout by Beerbohm's rococo imagination, this lyrical evocation of Edwardian undergraduate life at Oxford has, according to Forster, "a beauty unattainable by serious literature."
"I read Zuleika Dobson with pleasure," recalled Bertrand Russell. "It represents the Oxford that the two World Wars have destroyed with a charm that is not likely to be reproduced anywhere in the world for the next thousand years."

Beerbohm's best known works include A Christmas Garland (1912), a parody of literary styles, Seven Men (1919), which includes "Enoch Soames", the tale of a poet who makes a deal with the Devil to find out how posterity will remember him, and Zuleika Dobson (1911), his only novel.

a hoot
By Orrin C. Judd
I have to admit that when the Top 100 list came out, I had never heard of this book or it's author. And yet, by itself, the revelation of this satirical baroque masterpiece justifies all the wretched dreck I've waded through on the List.
Zuleika Dobson is the beautiful young granddaughter of the Warden of Judas College at Oxford. She's been earning a living as a conjurer and is the toast of France and America. But Zuleika has never loved a man. She has determined that a woman of her superior beauty can only love a man who is so superior as to be oblivious to her charms. Thus far, there has been no such man.
Immediately on her arrival on campus, the entire student body falls madly in love with her. However, at dinner her first night the young Duke of Dorset seems indifferent. Could he be the man? Alas, it turns out that he too is smitten and when she discovers this she spurns him. Unused to such a dismissal, the Duke decides that he must kill himself & soon the whole College is ready to follow his example.
The book is a shrieking hoot from start to finish & the whole thing is rendered in an ornate prose that is wholly unique. Take this description of the Duke & his troll like flat mate Noaks:
Sensitive reader, start not at the apparition! Oxford is a plexus of anomalies.
These two youths were (odd as it may seem to you) subject to the same Statutes,
affiliated to the same College, reading for the same School; aye! and though the
one had inherited half a score of noble and castellated roofs, whose mere
repairs cost him annually thousands and thousands of pounds, and the other's
people had but one mean little square of lead, from which the fireworks of the
Crystal Palace were clearly visible every Thursday evening, in Oxford one roof
sheltered both of them. Furthermore, there was even some measure of intimacy
between them It was the Duke's whim to condescend further in the direction of
Noaks than in any other. He saw in Noaks his own foil and antithesis, and made
a point of walking up the High with him at least once in every term. Noaks, for
his part, regarded the Duke with feelings mingled of idolatry and disapproval.
The Duke's First in Mods oppressed him (who, by dint of dogged industry, had
scraped a Second) more than all the other differences between them. But the
dullard's envy of brilliant men is always assuaged by the suspicion that they
will come to a bad end. Noaks may have regarded the Duke as a rather pathetic
figure, on the whole.
Or this passage describing the suicidal yearnings of the student body:
You cannot make a man by standing a sheep on its hindlegs. But by standing a
flock of sheep in that position you can make a crowd of men. If man were not a
gregarious animal, the world might have achieved, by this time, some real
progress towards civilization. Segregate him, and he is no fool. But let him
loose among his fellows, and he is lost--he becomes just a unit in unreason. If
any one of the undergraduates had met Miss Dobson in the desert of Sahara, he
would have fallen in love with her; but not one in a thousand of them would have
wished to die because she did not love him. The Duke's was a peculiar case.
For him to fall in love was itself a violent peripety, bound to produce a
violent upheaval; and such was his pride that for his love to be unrequited
would naturally enamour him of death. these other, these quite ordinary, young
men were the victims less of Zuleika than of the Duke's example, and of one
another. A crowd, proportionately to its size, magnifies all that in its units
pertains to the emotions, and diminishes all that in them pertains to thought.
It was because these undergraduates were a crowd that their passion for Zuleika
was so intense; and it was because they were a crowd that they followed so
blindly the lead given to them. To die for Miss Dobson was 'the thing to do'.
The Duke was going to do it. The Junta was going to do it. It is a hateful
fact, but we must face the fact, that snobbishness was one of the springs to the
tragedy here chronicled.

I can't recommend this one highly enough.

A bizarre and wonderful book
By jmm38
Zuleika Dobson must be one of the strangest books ever written. Beerbohm's ornate prose cloaks a bizarre story that, while it starts innocently enough, marches toward its surreal fate with the same determination as the Oxford undergraduates it depicts.
But that isn't to say it isn't a marvelous satire. Beerbohm caricatures immature love by pitting a mysteriously alluring woman, Zuleika, who loves no man foolish enough to love her, against a pretentious nobleman known only as The Duke, who never thought himself capable of loving anyone but himself. Somehow, the author manages to tell their perverse story even as he reveals himself to be the servant of the Greek muse Clio; and the work loses nothing as it spirals into a comic fairy-tale featuring cameos by animated statues, supernatural apparitions--even Beerbohm himself!
This particular edition is (at least as of right now) my favorite. It is wonderfully printed, and the text is peppered with Beerbohm's original illustrations. He never meant to include them in the book, but they seem only fitting in a work that refuses to be categorized as a serious novel, or a typical satire, or a children's fairy-tale. Strongly recommended for serious readers with senses of humor who aren't disturbed by unexpected flights of fancy.

Beautiful and farcical at the same time
By A Customer
Beerbohm was a great caricaturist, both in words and illustration, but Zuleika was, sadly, his only novel.
The first time you read it you will weep with laughter at the farcical hilarity of the situations that Beerbohm conjures up and the way that he describes them.
The second time you read it, you will weep be entranced by the beauty of the prose.
The third time you read it, you will realise that you have acquired a true friend in the book, which will live with you forever.
I have purchased countless copies of the book because I keep giving or lending copies to people ... and this is a book that once lent, never returns.

The New Great Game: China and South and Central Asia in the Era of Reform (Studies of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asi)From Stanford Univer

China's rise has elicited envy, admiration, and fear among its neighbors. Although much has been written about this, previous coverage portrays events as determined almost entirely by Beijing. Such accounts minimize or ignore the other side of the equation: namely, what individuals, corporate actors, and governments in other countries do to attract, shape, exploit, or deflect Chinese involvement. The New Great Game analyzes and explains how Chinese policies and priorities interact with the goals and actions of other countries in the region.

To explore the reciprocal nature of relations between China and countries in South and Central Asia, The New Great Game employs numerous policy-relevant lenses: geography, culture, history, resource endowments, and levels of development. This volume seeks to discover what has happened during the three decades of China's rise and why it happened as it did, with the goal of deeper understanding of Chinese and other national priorities and policies and of discerning patterns among countries and issues.

Leading work on a rapidly changing Asia--that includes South Asia
By RW
Superb edition by Dr Fingar and his co-contributors. It provides a valuable framework, perspectives from several vantage points, and some historical context to better understand how these two important regions are evolving and spurs thinking about what lies ahead. Well done. I have not seen another work the bridges the expertise of two regions in a remotely comparable way.
