CUDA Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to GPU Programming, The, by Nicholas Wilt

The CUDA Handbook begins where CUDA by Example (Addison-Wesley, 2011) leaves off, discussing CUDA hardware and software in greater detail and covering both CUDA 5.0 and Kepler. Every CUDA developer, from the casual to the most sophisticated, will find something here of interest and immediate usefulness. Newer CUDA developers will see how the hardware processes commands and how the driver checks progress; more experienced CUDA developers will appreciate the expert coverage of topics such as the driver API and context migration, as well as the guidance on how best to structure CPU/GPU data interchange and synchronization.

The accompanying open source code–more than 25,000 lines of it, freely available at www.cudahandbook.com–is specifically intended to be reused and repurposed by developers.

Designed to be both a comprehensive reference and a practical cookbook, the text is divided into the following three parts:

Part I, Overview, gives high-level descriptions of the hardware and software that make CUDA possible.

Part II, Details, provides thorough descriptions of every aspect of CUDA, including

  •  Memory
  • Streams and events
  •  Models of execution, including the dynamic parallelism feature, new with CUDA 5.0 and SM 3.5
  • The streaming multiprocessors, including descriptions of all features through SM 3.5
  • Programming multiple GPUs
  • Texturing

The source code accompanying Part II is presented as reusable microbenchmarks and microdemos, designed to expose specific hardware characteristics or highlight specific use cases.

Part III, Select Applications, details specific families of CUDA applications and key parallel algorithms, including

  •  Streaming workloads
  • Reduction
  • Parallel prefix sum (Scan)
  • N-body
  • Image Processing
These algorithms cover the full range of potential CUDA applications.

Excellent but NOT for beginners!
By Timothy Masters
As one slowly learns CUDA programming, numerous questions arise concerning the internal workings of the GPU. The beginning programmer does many things on faith: the documentation says to do it this way, so you do it that way, and it works. Why was that way necessary? Not clear.

The documentation supplied by nVidia is very good, and several excellent beginners' books are available. But these things fail to answer the many subtle issues that arise. That's where this book comes in. Over and over as I read it, I said, "Ohhh, that's why I have to do it that way." This book was written by a real insider, someone who knows CUDA as only an insider can. So this book is MANDATORY for anyone who wants to become an expert in CUDA programming.

However, be warned that this book is NOT for beginners! It presupposes extensive experience in CUDA programming. If this is the first CUDA book you pick up, you'll be hopelessly lost. Tackle this book only after you have a lot of CUDA under your belt.

Great book - this does more than just clinically explain the language. You can tell the author has spent a lot of time using CUDA and shared his experience in what works well, what could be better, how to get performance, and many other pearls of wisdom.

Real Science. Real Life. Now with DSM5 coverage throughout.

This leading-edge author team, consisting of three active researchers, clinicians, and educators, take a scientist-practitioner approach emphasizing the rich blend of both the science and practice of abnormal psychology throughout the text. The developmental trajectory of each condition is discussed where appropriate and scientific findings with respect to race and gender are incorporated into discussions about each condition.Biological findings are integrated with findings from social and behavioral sciences, highlighting the complexity of abnormal behavior and how it is often influenced by a wide range of variables. The authors encourage students to look at psychological disorders along a continuum and analyze disorders in terms of whether the individual’s behavior creates distress or impairs daily functioning. Importantly, an effort is made to “bring to life” the nature of these conditions by providing vivid clinical descriptions. In addition to short descriptions used liberally throughout each chapter, a fully integrated case study is presented at the end of each chapter, again illustrating the interplay of biological, psychosocial and emotional factors.

The 3rd edition includes coverage of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), with updated text references and examples throughout.

MyPsychLab is an integral part of the Beidel / Bulik / Stanley program. Key learning applications include MyPsychLab video series with new virtual case studies.

Just a great text book!
By Joseph Erickson
I bought this book last year to review as core text book for my psychopathology course - it had everything I needed such as key concepts, solid examples, excellently organized, easy to follow and very thorough. I especially appreciated the lack of fluff and the focus on important concepts, diagnostic criteria and how it related to the DSM IV TR (at the time). This is an excellent book and I use to presently to review the concepts of mental illness, organization of mental disorders, and review of criterias for graduate level students. I have also incorporated the material in some fiction for my main characters. Excellent read and great text book.

Worst Textbook Ever
By Gypsigirl213
This textbook is full of errors. Not only grammatical, but there is several informational errors as well. It is extremely poorly written and I'm surprised that Butcher, Mineka and Hooley would allow their names be associated with it. I have considered contacting each of them to inform them of the awful mess that they have allowed their names to be associated with. Maybe when Pearson decides to publish the 15th edition, they'll hire me to ghost write instead of the schlubs that ghosted this edition. It is truly terrible.

Everything you need to know about psychiatric disorders and medicines.
By Kim
There is so much information in this book about psychotropic drugs, their side effects, and reasons for their usage. I learned much about the use and risk of these drugs. There is also information about psychiatric disorders and very descriptive explanations of what these people undergo. Interesting information. I feel sorry for anyone who needs psychiatric care because their pain may be difficult to treat and the side effects of the medicines may be debilitating. An informative textbook that taught me a lot. I used it for my Abnormal Psych college class.

Cocktail fun
By K Maffei
This book has been a lot of fun for us.

We recently got into making cocktails after renovating the family room, which has a built-in bar from the 60s. After a year of stocking it and making a lot of standard, popular drinks and trying recipes we found online, we started exploring with bitters and aperitifs and some of the less common spirits.

That's why this book was a lot of fun for us. There are classic, original recipes for some of the more common drinks we'd already been making, and it was fun comparing them. And there are a lot of unusual drinks we've never heard of. Plus all of the interesting historical backgrounds.

What we did was go through page by page, find something interesting that we have ingredients for, read about it and make it and taste. Then on to the next page! It'll take some time to go through it all (I hope) but it's entertaining.

As for the ingredients, many cocktails can be made with basic bar liquors (make sure you have some bitters and both dry & sweet vermouth, at least). I'd say that if your bar is stocked with the basics, all you'll want to do is flip through for a few of the unusual things you don't already have so you can try something new. And then have some fun!

Dr Cocktails somehow improves on perfection
By Christopher Carlsson
Designed from the get go by a graphic artist with full artistic control and an obsessive and loving attention to detail this book delights at least four of the five senses - okay, all five if you like the smell of good ink) done with exhaustive attention to subject material, layout, paper, printing and virtually every other aspect one could think of.

This is a must have classic tome on mixology and of course on classic mixology.

While there are many new reprints of classic bar and mixing manual today this one is especially useful from a practical and entertainment standpoint. The wire binding, relatively spill proof paper , backstories and type size/font make it extremely easy to read and use- unlike many of its competitors.

Covering 100 extremely hard to find but very worthwhile recipes and the back stories to regale your audience while preparing said recipes.

Excellent Cocktail Book
By TK
This book really is meant for the cocktail enthusiast. This book is for you if you:
1. Love making cocktails
2. Like reading about the history of individual cocktails
3. Enjoy truly classic cocktails that are meant to enjoy the spirit itself (and not the terribleness you get at most bars today)

Do not buy this book is you are just looking for a recipe book, or if you think a martini is made with vodka....on second thought, maybe you should buy this book if you think a martini is made with vodka and get educated.

Ted Haigh (author, "Dr. Cocktail") does an excellent job with this book with his recipes and history of every single cocktail listed. It is essentially a library of cocktails within one book. The first part deals with the history of cocktails and Prohibition. He has some "extra" cocktails in the back as well, basically an excellent list of cocktails worth mentioning that aren't in the main part of the book. In the histories of the drinks, broad subjects end up being covered like specific bitters, spirits, rare ingredients, etc.

The book itself has a stiff cover to it which is nice. Smaller size book, 7'' x 8''. Inside the spine of the book it is wire bound though, which is fine in my opinion. I haven't had any problems with that. The pages are thick, and well "laminated" (I don't know the specific type of paper), but it is not regular paper such as in a paperback book, much thicker and resilient. Lots of pictures throughout the book, and not just of drinks, but of actual bars, photos, cartoons, etc.

Very good and informative book
By A Customer
This book presents the various arrythmias in a very good format. From atrial to junctional rhythms, her explanations and diagrams are very helpful and informative.
My only complaint, and why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that I wish she would have put some sort of cardiac pharmacology table in with the text (i.e. what drugs are indicated for the various dysrhythmias).

An awsome resource for students
By Medic man
This book is an excellent resource for any student of a medical profession in which you're required to read EKG's. I'm currently in medic school and found that out of about 4 books that this one is best. The terminology is easy to understand. If you can't understand the information this book provides, it may be best not to try. I found the section on page 226 and 227 that gives a list of cardiac drugs, uses, and effects to be very helpful. I like that they give you several strips at the end of each chapter to try and identify as well as a post test and then provide you the answers in the back of the book. I also like that they have a chapter just on 12 lead interpretations. So if you're wondering if it is worth it i would say definitely.

Best of the lot
By Sachelis
I own many ECG books, including Taigman's Advanced Cardiology, Brady's Basic Arrhythmias, and Grauer's ACLS Arrhythmia Interpretation. This book is the best of the lot. Although all the books claim to simplify the understanding of ECG's, Aehlert actually does it.

Art Matters, by Peter de Bolla

In the face of a great work of art, we so often stand mute, struck dumb. Is this a function—perhaps the first and foremost—of aesthetic experience? Or do we lack the words to say what we feel? Countering current assumptions that art is valued only according to taste or ideology, Peter de Bolla gives a voice—and vocabulary—to the wonder art can inspire. Working toward a better understanding of what it is to be profoundly moved by a work of art, he forces us to reconsider the importance of art works and the singular nature and value of our experience of them.

In many ways a "practical aesthetics," Art Matters proceeds by way of example. Through chapters attending to three works of art—Barnett Newman's painting Vir Heroicus Sublimis, pianist Glenn Gould's second recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, and William Wordsworth's poem "We Are Seven"—de Bolla plots a personal history of aesthetic experience that opens up the general forms of art appreciation. His book invites us to a closer encounter with art, and to a deeper appreciation and clearer expression of what such an encounter might hold.

From Publishers Weekly
In four short chapters and an introduction, Cambridge University Fellow de Bolla (The Discourse of the Sublime) mulls over his reactions to art, especially what he calls "mutism: being struck dumb" by a work. Among the cases he examines in detail are a painting by American modernist Barnett Newman ("Vir Heroicus Sublimus"), Canadian pianist Glenn Gould's second recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" and a poem by Wordsworth, "We Are Seven." Although most of the text is in dense philosophical-speak, rife with references to Kant and other names familiar to readers who have taken a course or two in philosophy, a wry pragmatism peeps through, such as when de Bolla states that some students "refuse to talk about" their aesthetic responses, either out of "fear of losing something valuable to them" or else because of the "mundane mechanics" of the Cambridge University grading system. Elsewhere, de Bolla cannily refuses to consider Newman's abstract canvas separately from its context and location, New York's Museum of Modern Art. On Glenn Gould, de Bolla mixes references to jazz and classical performance, which are intrinsically different art forms, with some biographical errors, such as the false notion that Gould lived "in almost complete physical seclusion." On Wordsworth the author is more secure, making folksy observations such as, "Reading is a far more risky business than is often assumed, or than we care to admit, but it is said that there is often scant reward where there is no risk." There are plenty of both here. 10 color illustrations not seen by PW. (Nov.) Forecast: Despite the challenging writing style, there is enough donnish Brit charm here to appeal to readers with a cursory acquaintance with philosophy and the arts. Good for larger collections on the arts, although the desultory chapter on Gould can be safely skipped by music fans. Readers looking for unsentimental paths to art-based solace might be pointed here.

From Library Journal
De Bolla (Cambridge Univ.; The Discourse of the Sublime) analyzes three works a painting by Barnett Newman, pianist Glenn Gould's second recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, and Wordsworth's poem "We Are Seven" to tease out the essential nature of what makes each "art." In searching for the nature of the artistic "self," he uses Marc Quinn's eerie self-portrait, "Self," which is molded from the artist's own blood, to tie together these disparate modes of expression. Writing in a passionate yet always informative style, de Bolla makes a convincing case that "art matters."

Review
Peter de Bolla's book is a series of meditations on certain works of art ("fragments from an aesthetic education"). He writes with originality and his prose is notable for its clarity--the matter is too serious to be spoiled by false rhetorical flourishes. The subtlety and honesty of his book is extremely impressive; his success may be, as he himself remarks, "hard won," but to the reader the book is a source of unmixed pleasure.
--Sir Frank Kermode

Art Matters is an impressive tour de force that de Bolla can successfully deal with works in such varied media (painting, music, and poetry), and that he can make parallel claims about all three (in terms of their presentation of a kind of presence on the part both of the work and the person contemplating the work), even though in each case his reading is especially attentive to the materiality of the particular medium in question.
--Steven Shaviro, Professor of English, University of Washington

This is a book which offers to return aesthetics to the encounter with the work of art, rather than the girds and programmes art is often supposed to fit. There are people, on the right and left, who argue that art is simply politics or ideology in disguise, and there are all kinds of (despairing or indifferent) people who think art is just entertainment hoisted into some kind of pantheon by professors and pundits. De Bolla wants to say, rightly, that art is far more than this, and far more intimate, interesting, and valuable than these caricatures would suggest. What he does is prove by example that speculative criticism can be personal and passionate, and by implication that only close encounters with particular works of any art will give us anything to talk about.
--Michael Wood, Professor of English, Princeton University

Art Matters is against intimidation. De Bolla's ambition in this book is to show us just how generous art objects are, given a chance; and just how difficult it has become to experience our experience of them in the language available. There are stories to be told about the eloquence of being mute, and de Bolla has used his own aesthetic experiences to tell them. Art Matters is writing about art at its most telling. It is a remarkable book.
--Adam Phillips, Principal Child Psychotherapist, Wolverton Gardens Child and Family Consultation Centre, London

Peter de Bolla's Art Matters is an extraordinary description of and argument for the uniqueness of the aesthetic experience. Despite the inherent difficulty and complexity of this enterprise (in which aspects of musical performance, lyric poetry, and contemporary painting are described with great attentiveness) de Bolla has produced a grippingly refined and persuasive text, utterly free of sentimentality or cant, true, direct, original.
--Edward Said

De Bolla analyzes three works--a painting by Barnett Newman, pianist Glenn Gould's second recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, and Wordsworth's poem 'We Are Seven'--to tease out the essential nature of what makes each 'art'...Writing in a passionate yet always informative style, de Bolla makes a convincing case that 'art matters.'
--Martin R. Kalfatovic (Library Journal 2001-11-01)

This book is of special interest because it shows a person of great sensitivity and intelligence experiencing some very difficult works of visual art, music, and literature...De Bolla is a sensitive listener. [This book is] challenging but appealing.
--R. E. Palmer (Choice 2002-06-01)

As both a preparation for aesthetic experience and as a defense of art, Art Matters is unique--and uniquely good. De Bolla not only talks about art's wonder, he makes us feel it.
--Tom D'Evelyn (Providence Journal 2002-05-26)

American Philosophy: From Wounded Knee to the Present, by Erin McKenna, Scott L. Pratt

American Philosophy offers the first historically framed introduction to the tradition of American philosophy and its contemporary engagement with the world.

Born out of the social and political turmoil of the Civil War, American philosophy was a means of dealing with conflict and change. In the turbulence of the 21st century, this remains as relevant as ever. Placing the work of present-day American philosophers in the context of a history of resistance, through a philosophical tradition marked by a commitment to pluralism, fallibilism and liberation, this book tells the story of a philosophy shaped by major events that call for reflection and illustrates the ways in which philosophy is relevant to lived experience.

This book presents a survey of the historical development of American philosophy, as well as coverage of key contemporary issues in America including race theory, feminism, indigenous peoples, and environmentalism and is the ideal introduction to the work of the major American thinkers, past and present, and the sheer breadth of their ideas and influence.

Review

“The most comprehensive and inclusive introductory guide to how philosophy in the United States has served a role in the history of domination and the struggle for liberation of all of its groups. [...] This splendid work is necessary reading for students, philosophers, historians, and sociologists.” ―Gregory Fernando Pappas, Professor, Department of Philosophy, Texas A&M University, USA

“Extraordinary inclusivity is the word for this stunning, historical, and interpretive presentation of the rich and complex tapestry of American Philosophy. This book will be the primary scholarly resource for decades to come.” ―John J. McDermott, University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Humanities, Texas A&M University, USA

“This book reminds us of why philosophy matters. By expanding who counts as American philosophers and situating them in the struggles of their times, Pratt and McKenna not only show the origins of present-day problems but also offer perceptive insights and useful resources that are still sorely needed.” ―Charlene Haddock Seigfried, Professor of Philosophy and American Studies, Philosophy Department, Purdue University, USA

“Tired of histories of American philosophy that celebrate the usual suspects-Peirce, James, Dewey and the boys-and leave it at that?

In America the Philosophical, I argued that America boasts far more important thinkers than ever get the Good Housekeeping seal from establishment philosophy departments. Now, in American Philosophy: From Wounded Knee to the Present, Erin McKenna and Scott Pratt spectacularly blow up the petrified picture of the field, throwing open the subject to an array of critical thinkers who mattered tremendously in America's struggle to be a more decent and enlightened society.

A history of American philosophy that explains and interprets-in addition to traditional stalwarts-such iconoclastic figures as Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, W.E.B. Du Bois, Aldo Leopold, James Baldwin, and Bell Hooks? Were they a part of American philosophy?

You bet they were. At least of any American philosophy worth a dime in the real world.” ―Carlin Romano, Professor of Philosophy and Humanities, Ursinus College, USA

American Philosophy From Wounded Knee to the Present
By Robin Friedman
So much is wonderful, thoughtful, and informative about this book and so much is dogmatic and infuriating. I loved most of this book with its provocations, but it began to wear out its welcome towards the end. Erin McKenna and Scott Pratt are both professors of philosophy at Pacific Lutheran University and the authors of this lengthy, ambitious book, "American Philosophy From Wounded Knee to the Present." This book is a history of American philosophical thinking, social and political thinking, polemic, and much more.

The book sees American philosophy as centered in a philosophy of resistance. The book observes that some individuals have denied that there is an "American" philosophy "because it associates the endeavor with industrial capitalism, militarism, the creation of grinding poverty and extreme wealth, exploitation based upon gender and race, and global domination." This would present a dismal picture indeed, and the book focuses on the path of American philosophy as "inexorably bound to a history of domination and the struggle for liberation" and for its resistance to what the individuals denying the possibility of an "American" philosophy understand of the nature of American life. McKenna and Pratt thus devote a great deal of attention to writers that for a long time received little attention in the study of American philosophy -- Indians, African Americans, women, Latin Americans, and more. The book intertwines discussion of these once little known figures with a treatment of American pragmatism and its successors in American academic philosophy, particularly analytic philosophy. It is sometimes difficult to tell which philosophers are on the side of resistance.

The book is in six large parts organized chronologically as well as thematically. The opening part covers the years 1894 -- 1918, with the end of WW I. Besides discussing early Indian, feminist, and labor figures, the book describes the American thinkers Peirce, James, Royce, Dewey, and Jane Addams. There is a great deal to cover in the small space of each chapter, and the discussions are good, if quick. The second part of the book covers the period 1918 -- 1939 and the history of these years with attention to W.E.B. Dubois, Morris R. Cohen, Mary Follett, and the cultural pluralism associated with Kallen and Alain Locke. Part 3 of the book covers the years 1939 -- 1979 with the dominance of analytical philosophy in the United States together with the rise of philosophers from a variety of competing perspectives who found that analytical philosophy was limited in scope and believed that philosophy should move at least in part in other directions. In part 4, McKenna and Pratt discuss early environmental philosophy, social critics such as C. Wright Mills, and political philosophers including John Rawls, Robert Nozick, and Noam Chomsky. Part 5 includes chapters devoted to Latin American, feminist, Indian, Black Power and environmental thinkers of the second half of the Twentieth Century. In the final part of the book, the authors offer valuable suggestions for exploring the work of key American thinkers such as Peirce, James, Dewey, and Royce and discuss their views of the current state of American philosophy and of the American polity and their vision for the future.

The value of the book lies primarily in the wonderful diversity and creativity of thinking in the United States. It offers introductions to familiar figures as well as information about thinkers who deserve to be read. There is a great deal to be learned from figures such as Mary Whiton Calkins, Jacob Lowenberg, Vine Deloria, a range of thinkers from Latin America and more that are explored in the book. I learned a great deal as well from the book's exposition of Black Power and feminist thinkers. As the book emphasizes repeatedly, there is value in pluralism and in exposure to widely different points of view. It is always good to be reminded that one can learn from those with whom one may not fully agree. The parts of the book that are chronologically arranged include brief suggestions for reading at the end of each chapter. The extensive bibliography of the book is arranged by chapters thus encouraging readers to research more deeply figures they find interesting.

The book is marred heavily by its polemical tone and by the assurance of the authors that their political vision and understanding of the scope and nature of philosophy are correct to the exclusion of others. The book praises the fallibilism associated with Charles Peirce and other American pragmatists but does not practice it. There is never any doubt about which political and philosophical sides the book is on. The book sees the proper direction of American philosophy as "promoting critical thought and action in a tradition of pluralism and resistance. Without this voice present we are likely to return to or continue the kind of 'culture wars' that were spawned in the United States in the 1960s and continue in various forms to this day." The spectre of the 1960s hangs heavily over this book. Perhaps there is a sense in which one may find a way out of the increased polarization and a form of healing.

The critical nature of the book circles back on itself. I was reminded of two popular studies to which the authors refer in their introduction: Louis Menand's "The Metaphysical Club" The Metaphysical Club: A Story of Ideas in America and Carlin Romano's "America the Philosophical",America the Philosophical, both of which I have reviewed here on Amazon. These books cover some of the same thinkers and themes as does McKenna's and Pratt's book. They give the sense of the United States as intellectually alive and vibrant in contrast to the derogations leveled by some at "idiot America". At its best, McKenna and Pratt have taught me again to love the United States and the scope it has afforded with its faults for thought, growth and life. This was the primary teaching of the book for me even though it was not the major lesson the authors intended to convey. Readers who love the life of the mind and who are interested in its great variety and iconoclasm in the United States will want to read and mostly love this book.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn

Two Pulitzer Prize winners expose the most pervasive human rights violation of our era-the oppression of women in the developing world-and tell us what we can do about it.An old Chinese proverb says Women hold up half the sky. Then why do the women of Africa and Asia persistently suffer human rights abuses? Continuing their focus on humanitarian issues, journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn take us to Africa and Asia, where many women live in profoundly dire circumstances-and some succeed against all odds.A Cambodian teenager is sold into sex slavery; a formerly illiterate woman becomes a surgeon in Addis Ababa. An Ethiopian woman is left for dead after a difficult birth; a gang rape victim galvanizes the international community and creates schools in Pakistan. An Afghan wife is beaten by her husband and mother-in-law; a former Peace Corps volunteer founds an organization that educates and campaigns for women's rights in Senegal.Through their powerful true stories, the authors show that the key to progress lies in unleashing women's potential, that change is possible, and that each of us can play a role in making it happen.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. New York Times columnist Kristof and his wife, WuDunn, a former Times reporter, make a brilliantly argued case for investing in the health and autonomy of women worldwide. More girls have been killed in the last fifty years, precisely because they were girls, than men were killed in all the wars of the twentieth century, they write, detailing the rampant gendercide in the developing world, particularly in India and Pakistan. Far from merely making moral appeals, the authors posit that it is impossible for countries to climb out of poverty if only a fraction of women (9% in Pakistan, for example) participate in the labor force. China's meteoric rise was due to women's economic empowerment: 80% of the factory workers in the Guangdong province are female; six of the 10 richest self-made women in the world are Chinese. The authors reveal local women to be the most effective change agents: The best role for Americans... isn't holding the microphone at the front of the rally but writing the checks, an assertion they contradict in their unnecessary profiles of American volunteers finding compensations for the lack of shopping malls and Netflix movies in making a difference abroad. From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics, universally inspired by Half the Sky, used their reviews as an opportunity to take up its message. They praised not only Kristof and WuDunn's clear moral stance and explanation of the issues but also the way they combined individual women's stories and practical advice to give the book an optimistic tone. Reviewers pointed out some flaws, particularly the authors' focus on individual action (such as providing a list of hospitals and schools to direct charity to) while neglecting to criticize the policies of Western governments. As more than one reviewer pointed out, Saudi Arabia, a country with one of the worst records of oppressing women, is a U.S. ally. Nevertheless, critics encouraged readers to pick up Half the Sky, which, according to the Seattle Times, "will ignite a grass-roots revolution like the one that eliminated slavery."

Review
“Stunning . . . [Half the Sky] belongs on the ‘must-read’ list because it offers perspective, insight, and clear-eyed optimism for why and how each of us can and should meet one of the great moral and humanitarian challenges of our times.”
―Bill Gates, Sr., The Huffington Post

“Cassandra Campbell’s somber reading couldn’t be more attuned to the authors’ mission as she interprets writing that is as intense as it gets. Her impressive depth carries listeners through the book's gruesome lows and inspiring highs, and ultimately to a place where they cannot dismiss this human rights tragedy.”
―AudioFile [Earphones Award Winner] (Bill Gates, Sr., The Huffington Post)

“I really do think this is one of the most important books I have ever reviewed.”
―Carolyn See, The Washington Post (Fareed Zakaria)

“Strongly recommended.”

I would also like to have seen them focus on America’s oppression of ...
By Elise Hamilton
Half the Sky (HTS) has been on my To-Read list for a long time. A recent PBS airing of Kristof and WuDunn's documentary, A Path Appears (APA), took HTS to the top of my reading list. For a long time (but increasing over time with their horror and magnitude), I've been smacked with example after example of oppression and violence against women, be it in Africa or the U.S. I've wondered how I could most effectively help. (Which organizations are "safe" to donate to? Which programs are most successful? What can I, as an individual, do?) HTS helped immensely, both in my education of the problems and as a resource for knowing where to channel my efforts and my dollars.

Each HTS chapter focuses on a particular “issue” (sexual slavery, “honor” killings, femicide, acid attacks, rape as a warfare tactic, etc.), with the authors providing background, specific examples of some of the women and girls, and then a program (or more than one) that has helped. However, I do agree with some of the reviewers who were more critical of the authors’ journalistic rigor, faulting them for leaving out topics such as lack of sanitation as it especially affects women, or for not “honestly” portraying the realities of sexual slavery (saying that some of the prostitutes were in the business “willingly”; clearly, a 15 year old who was sold into slavery at age 6 cannot be called “willing” simply because she goes back into it when she can see no other option).

For my own criticisms, I wished that the authors had more vividly described the atrocity of genital mutilation, primarily because I don’t think they portrayed the subject in a way that adequately covered the long-term (life-long) suffering of the women.

I would also like to have seen them focus on America’s oppression of women, and for them to illustrate how the U.S. is moving two steps backward for every step forward in women’s reproductive rights. Perhaps that’s a topic all in itself, thus deserving its own book.

That said, the book was an excellent “Oppression of Women Around the World 101” primer, and I would hate for HTS’s detractors’ criticisms to dissuade others from reading HTS. Those of us who’ve taken this first “course” can now dig deeper through other books and more direct research.

Kristof has long deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.
By JustinHoca
I recently reviewed a host of books on the history and development of Islam and Middle Eastern history. I also read several which included some critiques along with views to the future and reform. I then worked through a list of books by Muslim women, most of which bring light to and critique inhumane practices found in their home countries. Included in this list was Nick Kristof's Half the Sky which looks at women's rights globally, and I'm also including another by someone who left Islam after an extensive intellectual and spiritual search. This book review is in the context of all of those books as a whole. The list (some reviews forthcoming):

Reform and human rights:
Infidel - Ayaan Hirsi Ali (4.5 stars)
Heretic - Ayaann Hirsi Ali (4 stars)
Headscarves and Hymens - Mona Eltahawy (4 stars)
I Am Malala - Malala Yousafzai (5 stars)
I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali (4.5 stars)
In the Land of Invisible Women - Qanta Ahmed (4.5 stars)
Between Two Worlds - Zainab Salbi (5 stars).
City of Lies - Ramita Navai (3 stars)
Half the Sky - Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn (4 stars)
Seeking Allah Finding Jesus - Nabeel Qureshi (4.5 stars)

Nick Kristof has long been deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize for his columns highlighting human rights abuses around the world and for helping those who are trying to make a difference. Women's rights, in particular, has been a central focus of Kristof's columns and this book gives details much further than he can in the NY Times. Much of it is difficult to read for its details in abuse of women but it contains enough hopeful stories of empowerment and change to keep a positive tone. From this book, I learned about Zainab Salbi's charity Women for Women, which helps survivors of rape in war. I later read Salbi's autobiography, which is excellent.

"The paramount challenge of the 21st century is women's rights in the developing world." Kristof and WuDunn travel the world highlighting challenges in various countries, including those purely of culture and religion. "Empowering girls disempowers terrorists." In Islamic countries, even the Pentagon has funded studies and programs looking at the effectiveness of empowering women in curbing violence. Education and civil rights are more effective than force. Studies have even found that access to Western soap operas showing rich and influential women affect villages that now have access to some television and satellites. (Qanta Ahmed makes this comment about Saudi Arabia in her book.)

The author who wrote the famous piece "In Praise of Sweatshops" continues his arguments of economic development in this work "Women working in sweatshops are better than women not working at all." In the realm of economic development, he praises Jeff Sachs but also concedes some of Sachs' nemesis Bill Easterly's criticisms. Kristof gives credit where it's due. He praises Bono, as well as the rather controversial Greg Mortenson, whose schools for girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan Kristof has visited. Women who are educated only a little are far better off than those who have no access at all. Despite other policy disagreements, President George W. Bush had a good record on cracking down on human trafficking and funding AIDS help, particularly for Africa.

There is much that is difficult to read in this book. You hear the details of a Cambodian girl brutally forced into prostitution. You read of border guards indifferent about watching exploited girls being trafficked but cracking down on pirated DVDs, militarized rape, bullying, and the lack of health care access in many countries. About the one million children forced into slavery, possibly three million women and children as sex slaves, and at the possible 20 million slaves in the world. Kristof and WuDunn offer portraits of women shattered and abused, but also of women becoming stronger, and women helping women. He highlights the women heroes. Anyone reading this book will want to spring into action, and the authors have answers for them. How can an American help?
- Be realistic about the pace of change.
- Focus on rural schools for women.
- Expose yourself and your children to foreign countries and cultures.

Kristof no longer supports legalization and regulation of prostitution as a solution, seeing too much exploitation by powerful forces. He tells stories of those rescued from their lives, only to return due to psychological issues or a lack of economic alternatives. If you close a brothel, you have to provide jobs for the women to empower themselves and live. There has to be a moral component, communities have to reach a "tipping point" of deciding "enough is enough," and Kristof gives some examples. In some cases, it is when one woman takes a public stand at great risk, and others follow, especially men.

The lack of reproductive health available in places like Sub-Saharan Africa is sobering. Niger reportedly has only 10 OBGYNs in the entire country. Fistula is a common problem. 95% of women in the Sudan are circumcised, a horrifying practice detailed by people like Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Kristof and WuDunn are quick to limit their criticisms of Islam on this point, and note it has more to do with cultural Islam than Islam universally; this is the debate in several of the books in the list at the top of this post. In the US, Kristof is critical of abortion policies that affect the criticially poor in inner-city America that are predominately minorities.

While skeptical of Christian legislation against abortion, Kristof has praise for missionaries; he admires their compassion and desire to live long-term in a country learning language and customs. While many Christians (including myself) bemoan the spread of the Pentecostal-inspired "prosperity gospel" in poor countries, Kristof notes that Pentecostalism in Africa has had the effect of empowering women, allowing them to become powerful leaders in their churches and raising their esteem in the community.

In all, I give this book 4 stars out of 5. It is a must-read if you are interested in women's rights and economic development around the world. I will hopefully enjoy the book's sequel soon.

A Life-Changing Read
By Emily Butler
First of all, this book is phenomenal and I could not put it down. This book is like a terrible car crash. You want to look away, but you can't. The stories described are heart breaking and stomach turning. But the ultimate feelings of hope and progress that the authors clearly express in their writing was what made me want to keep reading. I've been discussing this book with everyone I've met and have developed a deep passion for the empowerment of women across the world. This book opened my eyes and my heart to things I didn't know we're happening. This book changes you and the ways you see the world.
