The answer comes in four parts. First, Simon develops the idea of dialogue as a standard for evaluating political campaigns. Second, he shows that candidates' self-interest in winning leads them to avoid dialogue, that is substantive campaign discourse. Third, he demonstrates the beneficial effects produced by the little dialogue that actually occurs. Fourth, he pinpoints the forces responsible for these rare occurrences. The major lesson of this work is that campaign reform under its present guise will not bring about the more substantive campaigns that the public desires.

W. Lance Bennett is Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication and Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he is also director of the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement (www.engagedcitizen.org). His research and writing addresses how communication processes and technologies can enhance citizen engagement with politics and social life. Bennett has received the Ithiel de Sola Pool Lectureship and the Murray Edelman Distinguished Career Award from the American Political Science Association; a Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, from Uppsala University; the Olof Palme Visiting Professorship in Sweden; and the National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar career award.

Observers of American elections regularly bemoan the lack of substance in contemporary political campaigns. However, while the need for substance has been clearly articulated, the remedy is not so apparent. Meanwhile, a sea change in the conduct of American politics continues to increase the public's dependence on campaigns for political information. The traditional competition between parties has evolved into a clash of candidates. This clash increasingly occurs over the airwaves and through other means of direct contact, largely at the expense of previous mechanisms that mediated contact between politicians and the public. For voters, the campaign is the proximate source of information about the candidates and the most immediate influence on their decision. For candidates, the campaign offers the best opportunity to hear the public's voice, to clarify long-term goals, and to establish immediate political priorities. Thus, the lack of substance alarms citizens and scholars alike and underscores the importance of an investigation of the dynamics supporting substantive campaigns. In what follows, I attempt to expose the roots of this problem and then to isolate the factors that either elevate or debase campaign discourse.

The major strength of this book is its parallel presentation of key concepts of distributed computing using both DCOM and CORBA. The author shows how objects work under each standard and how to program with them using C++, Java, and Visual Basic (for DCOM only). (Short, useful code excerpts show the different programming techniques with each standard.) He explains how distributed computing works in general as well as the specifics and advantages of DCOM and CORBA for today's enterprise. (The basic differences remain--Microsoft is a proprietary standard with great development tools and little cross-platform support while CORBA is a strong cross-platform option with fewer options for development tools.) The Definite COM & CORBA Guide

Not only did "COM & CORBA Side by Side" did an excellent job of comparing COM & CORBA, it laid out a number of strategies to apply *both* technologies' strengths in designing and implementing your distributed system solutions. As Part 1 of the book is aptly titled, the book's overriding theme is embracing COM & CORBA to your advantage. Evolutionary background and current technology trends in distributed computing were covered thoroughly. Development issues on both client & server sides were given enough treatment to satisfy 2 groups of audience: developers who want to understand the implementation details & differences of COM & CORBA, and decision makers who need strategic information on the technology's main players and future directions.
However, the key to the entire book is Part 4 that covers COM & CORBA bridging strategies ranging from custom approaches (C++, JVM) to third-party commercial products (Visual Edge's ObjectBridge) to enterprise application servers that provide support for client & server components implemented with both COM & CORBA. This is probably the only COM & CORBA book currently available that provides comprehensive information on this topic. My only complaint is that only one commercial bridging product was covered in this section. I wish the author had spent more time on other third-party bridging solutions. Well, maybe that can be covered in a second edition.
The book is also logically laid out with executive summary before and after each chapter and major section. What I also like about the book's presentation is the example code are higlighted with light gray background, making it easy to distinguish between text & programming details. In all, it is refreshing to come across a book that promotes building solutions by harnessing the strengths of competing technologies and does a very good job at that with real code & examples.

A great book to keep for distributed computing

This is an amazing book which covers such a diverse field in distributed computing. This field is often confusing and sometimes even intimidating with many emerging technologies involving many programming languages and different platforms. Dr. Pritchard did an excellent job to bring much needed clarity in his book.
The book has a very good organization and it is very easy to follow. It starts with a brief discussion on the history and background of distributed objects with some fundamental concepts. It then presents a comprehensive and objective comparison of COM and COBRA on both server and client sides. The book is completed with the presentation of bridging techniques between COM and COBRA, enabling the two to interoperate and coexist in an enterprise system. Dr. Prichard apparently has applied both COM and COBRA in practical projects, and therefore he is able to share his past experiences in using these technologies. He offers many technical insights in the planning and assessment, design and architecture, as well as implementation details with code examples in C++, Java and VB. I enjoyed reading his strategy discussions the most. There are too many books on the market which are filled with codes and technical details. This is a rare book which puts an equal emphasis on planning and design strategies.
This book covers a variety of topics such as: MTS, MSMQ, ADO, ASP, OTS, JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans, just mentioning a few. Dr. Pritchard presents these topics in a concise yet clear fashion. I am truly amazed that he could present all these topics with such a clarity, illustrating his deep understanding on the subject. It is certainly a book to keep for anyone who is working on or planning an enterprise distributed object system with either COM or COBRA.

Typical applications are broadcasting, or point-to-point delivery of multimedia contents, which are very timely in the context of the current development of mobile services such as audio (MPEG4 AAC) or video (H263, H264) transmission using recent wireless transmission standards (DVH-H, DVB-SH, WiMAX, LTE).

This cross-disciplinary book is ideal for graduate students, researchers, and more generally professionals working either in signal processing for communications or in networking applications, interested in reliable multimedia transmission. This book is also of interest to people involved in cross-layer optimization of mobile networks. Its content may provide them with other points of view on their optimization problem, enlarging the set of tools which they could use.

Pierre Duhamel is director of research at CNRS/ LSS and has previously held research positions at Thomson-CSF, CNET, and ENST, where he was head of the Signal and Image Processing Department. He has served as chairman of the DSP committee and associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and Signal Processing Letters, as well as acting as a co-chair at MMSP and ICASSP conferences. He was awarded the Grand Prix France Telecom by the French Science Academy in 2000. He is co-author of more than 80 papers in international journals, 250 conference proceedings, and 28 patents.

Michel Kieffer is an assistant professor in signal processing for communications at the Universit� Paris-Sud and a researcher at the Laboratoire des Signaux et Syst�mes, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. His research interests are in joint source-channel coding and decoding techniques for the reliable transmission of multimedia contents. He serves as associate editor of Signal Processing (Elsevier). He is co-author of more than 90 contributions to journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters.

Good basic information for people just learning MPLus

I found this book very useful, but it would be good to have an updated version that included a broader range of models, for instance Latent Profile Analysis, not just LCA. One of the most useful things about this book were the tips on preparing data to be transferred from SPSS so that it could be used in MPlus. This isn't covered very well in the MPlus Manual. In addition, there are numerous tips throughout for the novice user of MPLus. Well worth the money.

Great book for SEM

I'm using this in addition to the Structural Equation Modeling book by Kenneth Bollen. It's a very helpful complement, and would probably be useful on its own if you had a strong base understanding of the statistical techniques already and just needed to get more information on modeling in Mplus.

This book was the perfect complement to my Advanced Statistic seminair in the PhD. In the live discussions we had the chance to analyze the benefits and applications of different data analysis techniques, while professor Geiser explains with perfect germanic order the HOW TO to prepare the data, program in MPlus, parametrize the analysis and interpret the results.
A note of caution: You will need the software, your hypothesis and databases to actually make good use of the book.

Born in Glasgow, Sharman Macdonald became an actress on graduation from Edinburgh University but gave it up to write. Her plays include When I Was a Girl, I Used to Scream and Shout... (Bush) which won her the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright of 1984, The Brave (Bush), When We Were Women (National), All Things Nice (Royal Court), Shades (Albery), The Winter Guest (West Yorkshire Playhouse/Almeida), which was adapted into a film with Alan Rickman, Sea Urchins (Dundee Rep), Borders of Paradise (Watford Place), After Juliet (National) and The Girl with Red Hair (Bush/Royal Lyceum). She is the author of two novels, The Beast and Night, Night.

Amazing and Beautiful

This is one of my favourite plays, and thought I want more than anything to give it 5 stars, reviews are supposed to be objective, and so I'm going to try my best to be.

After Juliet -- written by Sharman Macdonald with help from daughter Keira Knightley -- is a sequel to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Following Rosaline Capulet, the play shows that the feud between the families did not resolve itself after the deaths of the star-crossed lovers. A trial looms over the city of Verona that will determine the fate of those involved with the couple's marriage and subsequent suicide, as well as a vote for the Capulet's new Prince of Cats. Rosaline, who secretly loved Romeo as he once loved her, has been hardened by the death of her love, wishes to end the "peace" that their families have been forced to make and resume the feud with the Montagues. Benvolio Montague, who is in love with Rosaline, wants to show her that he means her no harm, wanting the feud to stay gone. The character Valentine is amazing. One of my favouirte roles. He's so dynamic, and I've heard of a production switching the role to female to add a love triange between Ros, Ben, and Val. The supporting characters are funny and witty. Rosaline has one of the best monologues I've ever read or seen performed, which is about two to three minutes long (depending on how the actress decides to read it) and goes through so many different emotions so seamlessly that I actually bought the script just to have a full copy. Such an amazing play.

Now my few negatinves (which aren't so horrible).

Valentine is the brother of Mercutio. This is in R&J, though, so that's not really the problem. The problem is that the brothers are now Montagues, where they were once related to the Prince. Also, Rosaline, who was supposed to become a nun, seemed to have no such plans, and that plot point from R&J was completely overlooked. Some of the things mentioned i nthe play might put out a few people, such as same-sex relationships, teenage sex, underage smoking, and cussing. I have no problem with these, but others might. I just thought I've give fair warning. However, the play is fantastic. I saw it performed by a high school that my friend goes to and they did amazing. I've even been trying to convince my theatre teacher to let us do this play next year. It's wonderful and a real delight to read and see.

Nice and inspiring introduction

I am often impressed, when I realize, how websites have evolved over the last years (do you remember the early pages with a dozen different styles and half a dozen animations simultaneously taking place?). In the meantime, I got used to many visually appealing and user friendly sites and it is only natural, that I want to use them on my mobile phone as well. This is easier said than done, as it turned out that part of my favorite sites looks broken and is unusable on mobile devices. This intrigued me. How come, that some companies fail to deliver the same experience on small screens while others seem to do it with ease?

This book does a great job in explaining that. The basic principles are already covered in chapter one. So I quickly learned, that it is enough to have a single version of a page that can adopt to different screens. No need to have several versions for different devices (this was a misconception I had, after observing, that websites often come in pairs like m.foo.com / www.foo.com). But there are many more aspects involved in making truly responsive designs, many of which I was not aware of, before reading this book.

It shines through, that the author is passionate about responsive web design and that the problems and solutions he presents come from real projects. His explanations are always clear and the text is full of practical examples, potential pitfalls and pointers to helpful resources. The practical examples are often from different backgrounds, but definitely add a lot to the text, as the author relates them to responsive web design convincingly.

Two topics that would have fit nicely into that book are Less (a CSS pre-processor) and the layout of Single Page Applications. On the other hand, there might be many more potential topics and not all of them can be covered. Anyway, as the book is, it gives an excellent starting point and I feel well equipped for building my first responsive website.

A must-read for all web developers

If you're a web developer and you aren't designing mobile-first, responsive websites already, then this book is a must-read. Even if you already are familiar with the concepts and are designing responsive sites, there are many helpful tips and tricks in here to help solidify your process. The concepts are clearly and thoroughly covered regardless of your level of technical understanding. A book like this is key in transforming your thinking from designing for a single screen or device toward thinking about designing for all screens whether they be the familiar computers, phones, and tablets of today or the watches, billboards, and refrigerators of tomorrow.

The Responsive Web is a Soup to Nuts guide for designing and coding a website for todays devices. It is required reading for all web developers and designers alike. Matthew Carver goes beyond mockups and code, and shows the strategies and reason behind the methods shown. It establishes a common language used for everyone involved in web building. This book goes further than other books I've read on the matter, with growing features for devices becoming accessible to the browser, we learn how to leverage these inputs to give the user better context than just their screen size.
