About the Author
Hafemann (Th.D., T�bingen) is the Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. Prior to joining the faculty of Gordon-Conwell, he served from 1995 to 2004 as the Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College and Graduate School in Wheaton, Illinois. His books include Suffering and the Ministry of the Spirit; Paul, Moses and the History of Israel; an NIV Application Commentary on 2 Corinthians; and The God of Promise and the Life of Faith: Understanding the Heart of the Bible. He has written several books, including Paul, Moses and the History of Israel and God of Promise and the Life of Faith.

The Good, the Okay, and the Unorthodox

Once in a while you stumble upon a theological book that enlightens you, edifies you, and confuses you all at the same time. This book is one of those books that does that to the reader. I will first say the positive things about the book before discussing the negatives. The book is divided into four sections dealing with the OT, the NT, the unity of the Bible, and the prospect of biblical theology in that order (so the reader will get a clear idea what the writer is discussing about).

Positives:

This book does contain some pretty good essays. OT essays by John Sailhamer and William Dumbrell were well written (Richard Schultz essay on the various modern OT theology methods might be valuable to those doing research on the OT). James M. Scott, Andreas Kostenberger, and G. K. Beale also wrote good essays from a NT perspective. Paul House's essay will make many people rethink their methods on how to do biblical theology. Graeme Goldsworthy's short essay is a nice way to top it all off by linking the importance of (correct) biblical theology with theological formation, education, and ministry.

Negatives:

Unfortunately, there are a couple of essays that are sour disappointments. The first one is Daniel Fuller's essay "Progressive Dispensationalism and the Law/Gospel Contrast" (pp. 237-48). Fuller has found another theological paradigm to attack to further his anti-sola fide agenda. Like his previous critique on Reformed covenant theology and classical dispensationalism, he argues that progressive dispensationalism also dichotimizes the law and Gospel (you could also say he has no fondness for Lutheranism and New Covenant Theology). He refutes the law/gospel dichotomy of PD by examining six "corners" of the debate. In fact, he says some things that might make traditional Protestants wearisome: "Commandments that bring mercy to those obeying them--these are laws of faith" (p. 245). Is Fuller suggesting that grace-driven law-keeping is a means of obtaining God's salvific mercy? If so, Fuller's traditionalist critics are correct when they say that he has departed from justification by faith alone (those who don't recognize this are being dishonest and inconsistent). Another essay that should cause many to worry is Ted Dorman's "The Future of Biblical Theology" (pp. 250-63). Dorman's goal of ecumenical dialogue has made him slip outside the boundaries of orthodox Protestantism. His advocacy of the "works of the Law" as "legalism" is not supported by most commentators. Also, he likes the idea of fusing justification with sanctification (p. 262). He even candidly admits that "the Reformers introduced a 'notional distinction' between justification (imputed righteousness) and sanctification (infused righteousness) where none had previously existed" (Ibid). Dorman can claim to be semi-Catholic or semi-Protestant (more accurately, he follows the view of righteousness advocated by the German school), but he definitely does not fit the bill of an orthodox Protestant.

Overall, a good work. Scott Hafemann's inclusion of the essays by Fuller and Dorman pretty much reveals where he lies on the soteriological spectrum (Hafemann follows closely with Fuller's view of the Law). Having said that, the book should be read by those interested in learning more about biblical theology and how it relates to ministry and personal sanctification.

Book was interesting but sometimes rambled on about nothing. What I appreciated most was the sincerity of the effort, but I could have been more moved if it included a more incarnational perspective.

Really for Engineers

I have read many management books, some clear some difficult to understand, more scientific. This book is really written for Engineers, and all concepts are given in very clear English, with many visuals which facilitates learning. Although I have enough experience and many trainings on management subjects, I really found this book very beneficial for myself, and strongly recommend to technical people.

Best book I have found on digital filmmaking and written by someone with comprehensive knowledge and experience

This is the third book on digital filmmaking I have purchased and the only one I can recommend to others. It is very well done with illustrations for topics where this is needed to understand the information and the concepts being presented. It shows that the author and the publisher took the time to get it right and did not rush something to print (like the Dummies book on DSLR filmmaking).

The author clearly understands the technology and the very different camera and gear options and covers the pros and cons of them in adequate detail so that the reader has an excellent basis for making their own purchase decisions and a much better chance of getting it right the first time (and saving themselves a lot of time and money).

This book along with Ric Viers "The Sound Bible" on sound recording are great resources for a novice filmmaker or videographer. The information is not dumbed down nor is it written like regurgitated ad copy from the equipment manufacturers, but it is not at all too technical for someone who is not experienced as a photographer or proficient with electronic equipment and computers.

I have been involved with photography since 1965 and did video camera work starting in 1972 and have been a professional in the computer industry since 1980 and I have worked as a professional photographer shooting weddings and doing product photography and video clips for product promotion and usage demos and so I am not a novice in many respects but I knew that video with a digital camera was new territory and I wanted books to provide a jump start and a good foundation. This book by Mark Brindle and the book by Ric Viers are ones I highly recommend to others who want to come up to speed quickly.

Good, but not Great.

While these devotions work great for those traveling internationally, they don't suit the mission trips in country as well. If you like mission trip devos that would work for all ages, both in the States and abroad, then check out Anticipate, Experience, Reflect by Standard Publishing. They are much better and offer a clearer biblical perspective on missions. Lena bogs down these devo's with too much details of her own travels and not even scripture. Many times the devos have very little or no scripture. I stopped reading them after awhile.
Instead use the Standard Publishing set. They are much better, more fitting for a wider audience, and it is written by more than one author each with a different perspective on mission work.

Dick DiVenzio hits a home run with this book. Great guide for coaches and leaders on a basketball team. The book flows nicely and is easy to read and gets right to the point. I can't wait to implement many of his suggestions with my own team!

Be a better coach

My husband is a high school boys basketball coach in a small town in Texas. He has many of Dick DeVenzio's books and they are worn out! He gave a copy to his assistant coach and to a couple of his players. He says that the advice given in the book has made him a better, more exact coach. He would highly recommend this book to anyone who is currently coaching or thinking about entering that field.

memorable Valentine's Day...

The once fierce, passionate, flame filled relationship of Dani and Shadow has hit a low interval. With Dani adapting to motherhood, preparing for baby #2 and Shadow taking over club business in the absent of the Prez; they barely have time for each other. Will they rekindle their sultry love affair just in time for Valentine's Day? Or will the unexpected obstacles thrown their way threaten more than just their relationship?

I loved the growth of H/h but what I love the most was that M stayed true to her characters. She changed them in a way that touches your heart BUT she forces us to see the murkiness that still lurks within them. This is a fast paced novella that delivers just as much as a full length novel would. When compared to Book 1 & 2, this short story without a doubt, holds it's own. Dani and Shadow’s path to their happily ever after has been paved with club business, threats, darkness, and babies, and while it definitely hasn’t been easy, it’s what makes Dani Shadow’s light/fire in his tormented world.

In The Love that Defies Us, Dani and Shadow’s story continues. It’s a few years later, and they’re settling into family life with their son, Zane, but with Shadow’s new position as VP of the club, there’s definitely a strain in their relationship because the time they get to spend together is far and few between, but that’s not something that will divide them because they’ve been through too much and defied too many odds to not be together.

In this Devil’s Dust novella, it’s Valentine’s Day, and Dani and Shadow, despite turmoil surrounding the club, want to show one another how important they are to each other and the idea of possessing the other’s body and soul is the only thing on their mind. Dani is Shadow’s number one priority, and he’s going to show her exactly what that means because he wouldn’t be able to exist without her by his side.

The continuation of Dani and Shadow’s relationship is a steamy, suspenseful ride that epitomizes how defying love can be even when faced with extreme situations. Dani and Shadow are bonded together; every challenge and obstacle thrown their way has been overcome, not without pain and suffering, but they’ve still been able to challenge anyone or anything from stopping them from being together. The idea of love fighting to beat the odds is personified in The Love That Defies Us; it shows what’s at the heart of both Dani and Shadow’s characters and it gives readers a bit more insight into the kind of man Bobby is as well, which helps lead into the next book in The Devil’s Dust series, and one that I’m anxiously awaiting.

I was so happy to be able to get a chance to review this novella. I have fell in love with these character's in this series. And it was nice to be able to go back and see how Dani and Shadow were doing. This novella starts off 2 years after everything happened with Dani and Shadow and I'm going to say right after Bull's novella ended (if you read that one).

Shadow is obviously being his bad self. He obviously is dealing with a lot. With basically being in charge of the club, his relationship with Dani, being a father and getting ready to have another one. But I still loved his smexy self. Though I do admit he really needs to learn to open up with Dani.

Dani is still her strong independent self in this novella. I almost want to say she's even a little more confident and strong in this story.

I don't want to give away anything but all I can say is there's a huge WOW moment where your like "I didn't see that coming."

I'd give this story 4.5 stars out of 5 stars and would recommend it. But really if you've read the other 3 in this series beforehand. Otherwise you might be confused to what's going on and who everyone is. Now and really now I can't wait to read Bobby's story next!!!!

MUST HAVE!

Incredible resource!!! This is exactly what I've been looking for - an easy to read, quick reference guide that covers all the details of providing anesthesia. I am halfway through my CRNA program, and find myself referring to this book more and more. Even completing care plans is so much easier with all the important summary notes on positioning/pharmacology/surgeries. Very thorough, and truly worth it!!
