About the Author

Dominic Sweetman is a member of the last generation of programmers who could reasonably hope to understand computer systems from bottom to top. His rich career began with low-level coding, progressing from OS development to LANs to distributed systems. Dominic is an experienced designer and developer of hardware systems, CPUs, networks, and operating systems. He was a founder member of Whitechapel Workstations, and in 1988 founded Algorithmics, a MIPS consulting firm of which he is the director. Dominic lives with his partner, two grown-up children and three cats in north London.

Great Introduction to using MIPS

I'm just getting started on a project involving embedded MIPS systems, and this book has been very helpful in easing my way into this new world. Very well written, and it assumes the right level of knowledge. Not so basic that it explains every concept of architecture design, but not so advanced that it requires any previous experience.

I highly recommend this for getting your feet wet with MIPS programming.

Lived up to the reviews (Excellent)

As a developer of a MIPS softcore (YARI, an FPGA implementation), I find this book to be an excellent reference and highly readable. While it doesn't cover 100% of the intricate details, it comes remarkable close.

Since the long and intricate history of the many many revisions of the MIPS architecture can be hard to follow, I was very excited to find a comprehensible account of this and many of the reasons why.

The writing style is engaging and light - remarkable for a topic that easily comes out dry.

This is a great book and a must have if you are developing any low level code for a mips based processor. I have been working on a mips based project for the last 4 months and feel this book was very beneficial in getting up to speed. The book is organized well with in depth practical details on how things work.

About the Author
Associate Professor Tom�š Br�nyik holds an MSc degree (1994) in Bioengineering and a PhD (1999) in Biotechnology from the Institute of Chemical Technology Prague (ICTP), Czech Republic. From 2000 to 2005 he held a position of post-doctoral fellow at Department of Bioengineering, University of Minho, Portugal. Presently he holds a position as associate professor at the Department of Biotechnology at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague. His research interests are in the area of fermentation engineering, cell physiology, alcohol-free beer production and use of non-traditional yeast in brewing. Dr. Eduardo Pires holds a PhD in chemical and biological engineering. The main topic of his research is continuous beer fermentation by flocculated yeast. The main problem affecting beers produced by over-populated yeast reactors is the excessive production of diacetyl during primary continuous fermentation. Dr. Pires' main task is currently to avoid the uncontrolled diacetyl formation under such conditions.

About the Author

Keith E. Stanovich is currently Emeritus Professor of Human Development and Applied Psychology at the University of Toronto. He is the author of over 175 scientific articles and seven books.� Stanovich is the 2012 recipient of the E. L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association and the recipient of the 2010 Grawemeyer Award in Education. In 2000 he received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. Stanovich is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 3, 7, 8, and 15) and the Association for Psychological Science.

Methodology Primer for Everyone

Stanovich was assigned reading in my psych class years ago (this review is of the 4th edition). It's the best introduction to sound methodology in the behavioral sciences I've ever read. As previous reviewers have pointed out, the critical thinking skills you learn from this book can (and OUGHT to) be applied) to many, many other facets of our daily life. It's not just for psych majors, but for everyone who reads a newspaper, buys consumer products, votes in elections, etc. And you don't need a background in statistics to benefit from it. A worthy companion to Darrell Huff's classic "How to Lie with Statistics" and John Allen Paulos's "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper".

I read this book during my research methods class while completing my undergraduate education four years ago. This was one of the most helpful books that I have ever read related to psychology. More specifically, this book reminds us that, as psychologists, we need to remember to take in all information with a grain of salt. In other words, remember to critically evaluate all information presented to you and not believe everything is face valid.

I have been waiting for years for a book like this to come along. It is truly a great read and gives tremendous skeptic treatment to the 'science' of psychology. For a long time I've considered myself a skeptic, but I have been on the fence as how to treat psychology--art or science? This book helped me to see it very clearly as science. Psychology has a long way to go to shed the soot of pseudoscience that has collected upon it in the last century, but if more people can cut through to the heart of the matter, like Stanovich has done, then the sooner it will emerge and bloom.

But keep in mind this is a very detailed if not somewhat technical explanation of the interaction of mind and matter. The language is extremely veiled/symbolic and is mostly made accessible in this translations. You should have some experience with the sadhana of another yiddam diety first before trying to understand this material.

vijahara (dwelt): Bhagavan pleasurably dwelt within the abodes of
the Buddha, the Enlightened One.

One of the most important books on Tantric Buddhism!

This is one of the most important texts published on Buddhist Tantra in english! It is a MUST for anyone who practices Vajrayana.
The authors have utilized the original Sanskrit source texts to give a seminal translation that is true to the spirit and word of the great Indian masters (Mahasiddhas) of enlightenment (Mahamudra), and it is a true treasure trove of wisdom to the initiate of Vajrayana Buddhism.
The text includes both the Sanskrit and English, side by side, so you can easily follow along, as well as the original ancient commentary on this important esoteric work.
It is only to be hoped that the authors (Farrow and Menon) publish more of their translations soon, including the forthcoming Candamaharoshana Tantra, and that more Tantric source texts will be translated and made available to the public.
The Tibetans do not rely on the source texts, and for the most part do not teach these texts, or recommend them to their students enough. It is to be hoped that any students of the Sakyapa who have taken the initiation of Hevajra will read this book, including anyone who is holding "anuttara" samaya for Chakrasamvara, Vajrayogini, and the other Yogini tantras.
It is essential to have these kind of source texts to understand the context of Tantra, and the samaya that is to be upheld by the Sadhaka (initiate).
