About the Author

David Doran graduated in 1950 with an external BSc (Eng). He then undertook National Service with the Royal Engineers in Malaya from 1953 to 1955. He is a Fellow of ICE and IStructE, a former member of Council of IStructE and Chairman of five Task Groups. From 1965 to 1985 he was Chief Engineer with George Wimpey plc, where he was Manager of the Civil & Structural Design Department with a staff of 300, and Head of QA for Wimpey Construction. Upon leaving Wimpey, David became an independent consultant and is retained by GBGeotechnics, Cambridge. He has been involved in several important publications since 1988.

Bob Cather graduated in Materials Science from the University of Bath. He initially worked with The Marley Tile Co. Ltd on product development and subsequently spent more than 30 years with Ove Arup & Partners. Bob has considerable expertise in the selection, design and performance of materials in the built environment. This expertise has enabled specialist contribution to projects and for clients worldwide, covering all areas of construction.

GARY GROTH-MARNAT, PhD, is in private practice in Santa Barbara, California, and is an adjunct professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. He is the author of three books and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters.

Great Book- but needs better copyediting

This book offers an excellent overview of many aspects of psych assessment. It was very helpful in reviewing for quals- but watch out! There are several errors in this book! The specificity of a test is incorrectly explained, as is MMPI-2 TRIN interpretation. Some wierd formatting inconsistencies pop up in the Rorschach section... I don't recommend this book for 1st year grad students who are learning this material for the first time because they won't catch the errors and may learn things incorrectly.

Excellent resource for practicing clinincians and students

Having read/reviewed numerous 'handbooks,' this is probably the best of the breed. Groth-Marnat has done an excellent job of covering the main assessment techniques used by clinicians to psychologically evaluate patients. Clinicians will find this handbook indispensable, and, in fact, (I predict) will keep it parked on their desk for ready access. Students will find the book thorough, informative and practical. If you are serious about psychological assessment, this one is a 'must-have.' You won't be disappointed.

Well worth the cost!

This book makes a great follow up to Crazy Love. While there aren't very many 'new' teachings to be had in this book it does make you think about what you believe and really evaluate your spiritual standing and makes you a bit more aware of the Holy Spirit's presence in your life.

I love the way Chan writes, he keeps you engaged and doesn't get too serious or too dry but still effectively delivers the message and gets his point across. I wish more people approached Christian topics with Chan's style of writing... there is a lot of great material out there but it's often dry and hard to stick with, this is not the case with Chan.

In Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit, Francis Chan has seven chapters ( I've Got Jesus. Why Do I Need the Spirit?, What Are You Afraid Of?, Theology of the Holy Spirit 101, Why Do You Want Him?, A Real Relationship, Forget About His Will for Your Life! and Supernatural Church) they stay on topic and build upon one another offering an easy to understand and follow outline of who the Holy Spirit is and why we need (and want) Him in our life. He covers things such as the Holy spirit being the promised gift of Jesus, what a relationship with the Holy Spirit can be and how to invest yourself to cultivate a relationship with God and the Holy Spirit.

If you've read, and liked, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God, I strongly urge you to pick this book up... I strongly urge you to pick up Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit REGARDLESS of if you are familiar with Francis Chan's writing or not. I intend to read them both once every other year or so because I feel they are good reminders to us as to where we might be neglecting parts of our spiritual life. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for other works by Francis Chan, and reviewing them here, in the future.

Forced me to think.

Francis Chan starts out Forgotten God by saying he wants to draw his conclusions from biblical texts rather than putting his own views into the book. He doesn't follow that as the majority of the book ends up being fairly opinion heavy exposition.

That said, the book does ask some good questions that forced me to think about things I probably wouldn't have addressed without going through the book. It addresses the modern state of belief in the Holy Spirit and where it should stand in our beliefs. That's really the book summed up into a sentence. The book is an easy read, as books like this tend to be, and goes quickly.

One thing I would recommend would be to read this book as part of a study with a group of people. While book does a good job of challenging your beliefs on the Holy Spirit and inspiring you to think about it in a new way, the concepts are abstract enough that without someone else to really hold you to putting what you've through about into action it probably won't happen. I walked away without any kind of real change in direction or beliefs, but it made me think about them quite a bit. Without people to hold me to continue processing what I'd read it would have been easy enough to read the book, think about it, and simply walk away without changing anything about myself as esoteric books tend to lend themselves to.

The book didn't make a better person. It didn't change my beliefs. But it did make me think long and hard about my beliefs. If you're interested in finding a book to provide a framework for thinking about the Holy Spirit and provide a basic roadmap this would be a book I could recommend to anyone.

Needed in This Time and Age Especially in The West

This book is extremely needed and should be read by all Western Christians. This book is a great refresher for those who understand the Holy Spirit at a theological level. We desperately need the power and leading of the Holy Spirit to usher in revival in the West. A political movement will not help, since the battle is spiritual and must be fought using the weapons God has given us. I was blessed and challenged by this book and appreciate the great Gift that God gave me: Himself in me.

About the Author

Seung-Bok Choi received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 1990. Since 1991, he has been a professor at Inha University, Incheon, South Korea. His current research interests include the design and control of functional structures and systems utilizing smart materials such as electrorheological and magnetorheological fluids, piezoelectric materials, and shape memory alloys. He is the author of over 250 archival international journal and book contributions, and 170 international conference publications. He is currently serving as the associate editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures and Smart Materials and Structures, and is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Vehicle Autonomous Systems and the International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications.

Young-Min Han received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Inha University, Incheon, South Korea, in 2005. Since 2006, he has been a research professor at Inha University. His current research interest includes the design and control of functional mechanisms utilizing smart materials such as active mounts, dispensing systems, shock absorbers, robotic manipulators, and human-machine interfaces. Dr. Han is the author of over 30 international journal papers and 20 international conference proceedings.
