About the Author
Gertrude Chandler Warner was born on April 16, 1890, in Putnam, Connecticut. In 1918, Warner began teaching at Israel Putnam School. In 1942, The Boxcar Children was published for these readers.

Great for reluctant readers!

I originally checked this book out at the library because my son wouldn't read the "longer" original version of the Boxcar Children. The Boxcar Children graphic novels are great for reluctant readers. Don't expect a thick book. They are slim paperbacks for children who enjoy reading cartoons. We now own four subsequent Boxcar mysteries. These mysteries are a perfect alternative for struggling readers.

I think they should have posted that certain books are not suited for certain Kindle readers

Although the story itself is a 5 star read, I have always loved this story. and was looking forward to reading it to my granddaughter. the comic graphic doesn't fit or show up well on my Kindle reader. I think they should have posted that certain books are not suited for certain Kindle readers. As a result I have again purchased something I can no longer read or watch.

Try This One to Grow Interest in the Series

The first Boxcar Children Graphic Novel is written on the 2nd Grade level.

In 32 pages, it tells the story of the 4 Alden children -- Henry, Jessie, Benny and Violet -- who try to stay together after their parents die. There is a rich Grandfather in the background, but the children are afraid to trust him, so they try living doing odd jobs. There adventures lead them to an abandoned boxcar where they set up house. That is, until Violet becomes sick. Enter Grandfather to help save the day.

I think this would be a good book to add to a classroom, and if I had a reluctant reader I would surely check this out of the library to see if the addition of Mike Dubisch's nice artwork didn't push them along to read the book and get interested in the series.

The Lockheed S-3 Viking was developed in the late 1960s to serve as a dedicated carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft. Over the years, it evolved into an outstanding surveillance and anti-surface platform, effective not only against submarines but also large and small surface ships. As its nearly 35-year career came to an end in 2009, the Viking also took on the carrier air wing organic tanking requirements, retiring with over half of its service life remaining. A total of 187 aircraft were built and served in 16 United States Navy squadrons. The Viking and its main variant, the highly-classified ES-3A Shadow electronic surveillance aircraft, played a key role in the Cold War and in the conflicts of the 1990s. The book is one of the few publications to tell the Viking story and is packed with photos and detailed line drawings, all depicting the aircraft's weapons, paint schemes, sensors and interior. It also provides an overview of some of the more significant variants that were studied, but never fully pursued, such as the Carrier On-Board Delivery (COD) and dedicated (KS) refueling variants. It also discusses the aircraft s role in Operation Desert Storm and how the lessons learned from that conflict impacted the Vikings' mission during the latter part of the 1990s and early 2000s. Illustrated with 186 photographs, line drawings, and numerous color profiles. 80 pages.

Excellent coverage about a important if unglamorous aircraft

The S-3 Viking never received the attention of the "pointy nosed" Navy tactical aircraft, but it was an important part of the carrier air wing for over three decades. Brad Elward is the leading author today on the subject of modern US Navy tactical jets, and he does not disappoint with this excellent book.

The book is in the standard and well-regarded Squadron/Signal "In Action" format. There are an assortment of nice photographs, useful line drawings taken from Navy manuals, and the outstanding color illustrations that we expect in this series. In keeping with the format, the text is brief but adequate. In all, there is plenty of information, well presented. For scale aircraft modellers, aircraft buffs and Navy personnel associated with the now-disbanded Viking/VS community, this is an affordable and superb reference.

A nice resource and informative

The Squadron/Signal books are always a mix of photos intended for modelers and general information about the subject for those who are interested in it. Their last few publications, including this one, have been well-done. This book has lots of color photos, lots of artwork, and interesting text. It has good photos of the cockpit and the various control consoles (although I wished there was at least one photo that tried to show the overall interior). Something that I really liked were the schematics showing various external features, particularly the antennas on the electronic warfare version. I would have liked to see a couple of illustrations of the proposed upgrades (I believe that there were at least two carrier onboard delivery versions that did not get built). The only thing missing--and I know that S/S books usually don't do this--was a list of all the airframes and what has happened to them now that the S-3 has been retired. But it's a great resource. If you are at all interested in this subject, you need this book.

Squadron/Signal Publication on the S-3 Viking Delivers the Goods

The S-3 Viking in Action book in the Squadron/Signal series is a well done combination of excellent photos, history of the various S-3 versions and detailed coverage of the aircraft's many systems and system upgrades over its life-cycle. The S-3A/B was a "Buck Rogers" weapons system platform in its prime and would still be that sophisticated were it still operational today. The book provides an excellent collection of photos including a large variety of squadron markings and detailed interior and exterior views. The description of how various Weapons System Upgrades were phased is both detailed and accurate as is the history of the variants that Lockheed produced. The aircraft sensors and data processing capabilities were both complex and highly integrated. The only related systems not covered in this book are the various support systems such as the Versatile Avionics System Test (VAST), the Tactical Support Centers and the console used in S-3 carrier ready rooms for mission debriefs. The latter was unique among carrier tactical aircraft in the 1970's and 80's.

Steve A. Yetiv is the Louis I. Jaffe Professor of International Relations at Old Dominion University. In addition to eight books, he has published over 250 editorials in papers including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Christian Science Monitor, and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, C-SPAN and NPR.

Drilling More Not Enough, Long-Term Solutions Rely on Using Less

"Yes, we are in the midst of an American oil boom, one that helps explain the precipitous decline in gasoline prices over the second half of 2014, as well as an only modest rebound so far in 2015. And yes, that boom, before it levels off around 2020, may well lead the U.S. to overtake the Saudis as the largest oil producer in the world by 2017, at least according to Fatih Birol, chief economist at the Paris-based International Energy Association.

Yet as professor Steve Yetiv, one of the America’s foremost oil analysts warns, this recent American oil boom is not the game changer some would have you believe. American national security still depends in large part upon the global energy market, one with inescapable ties to the Middle East.

In this light, Myths of the Oil Boom assumes a much welcomed long-term energy security focus. Yetiv acknowledges the benefits (as well as costs, i.e. groundwater contamination from fracking) of the recent American oil boom but forcefully contends this is not enough to inoculate us from the vagaries of foreign oil. Deep down, in their heart of hearts, even the most passionate advocates of the “drill, baby, drill” mantra know this, too. Great book. Yetiv is one of the best in explaining complicated material in a way that is understandable. He's an expert on the Middle East and oil, and this book is a treasure trove of information. It's also a great read!

Fracking not a long term solution to oil price, supply, and security problems

_Myths of the Oil Boom_ is an excellent and up to date treatment of oil supply and security issues. Yetiv takes stock of the effect the fracking revolution is likely to have on the short and long term price of oil and supply security. Fracking will help moderate oil prices for about five to ten years in Yetiv's estimation. The problem with peak oil is price and price swings. Oil will always be available if consumers are willing to pay enough.
Yetiv proposes that the US significantly reduce oil and gas use and an international program to reduce global oil and gas consumption. He argues for a revenue neutral gasoline tax in the US. He points out that there is no guarantee that higher CAFE standards will have the desired effect, and hybrid and electric cars will probably be cost prohibitive for many consumers.
He also points out that China is not exposed to the world price for oil like the US is. China makes co-production deals with many countries it imports oil from. China receives a share of oil from fields it invests in or develops in payment instead of cash. A rise in the world price of oil would hurt China substantially less than the US.
