I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. I thought unlike other people, I did not like Catherine. I thought she was a horrible person. I thought Clay did all he knew how to please this women and she continued to belittle him. He put up with way more that I would. I understand her issues growing up, but, why treat someone like that. But, I did enjoy the book.

I read this years ago in paperback and it was a favorite. I got the ebook and audible to see if it was as good as my memory. It was better. It is a coming into her own type of story for the female and it then sparks similar maturing for the male. It really is so very well written. A must read.

I loved the way she developed Catherine and Clay's characters. What seemed to be pulling them apart was, in the end, actually bringing them closer together. I loved the twist that her mother revealed that you never saw coming.

About the Author
Sewell was born in England into a devoutly Quaker family. Her mother was a successful author of children's books. Anna was largely educated at home. When Anna was fourteen she severely injured both of her ankles. For the rest of her life Anna was unable to stand without a crutch or to walk for any length of time. For greater mobility, she frequently used horse-drawn carriages, which contributed to her love of horses. Sewell's only published work was Black Beauty. Although it is now considered a children's classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. Sewell died five months after her book was published, living long enough to see its initial success.

This was not the full version there is a large portion of the story left out. I got this so I could read it to my daughter and I'm very disappointed so much is missing

Black Beauty cut off at the knees

I should have thought about what "young folks edition" means before downloading this. There's a lot missing from this edition, such as stories about cruelty to animals and ways to overcome it. We never find out about Beauty's accident--why did he fall down and break his knees?--and we never hear about why Jerry the cabman was forced to sell him. But to anyone who pretty much has the book memorized already, these things won't matter much.
