Perfect starting point for anyone considering taking the LSAT ...

If you want to get into the law school of your choice, or any law school for that matter, there is no doubt you are going to have to prepare for the LSAT. Simply being a good "test taker" is not going to be enough nor is that 4.0 you managed to hold onto for so long. There are a lot of people applying for a few slots and the competition will be hot. The difference can be how well you do on your LSATs. You're going to have to work hard, practice, think, and learn additional test taking strategies. Of course in reality there are very few "Dummies" who are prepping for law school.

I've seen much "heavier" prep books, but this is what I'd call a starter book. It will get the prospective law student a good look at what they may encounter on the LSAT. It's not quite as daunting as a couple of seen. This book tends to be more user-friendly and conversational. For example I'm seeing statements like "Pick a Side--No Ridin' the Fence." It's a much more relaxed introduction stuck right in the middle of a very serious conversation about the writing sample that just could make or break admission to the law school of your choice. I'd lean toward recommending this book to those who either are certain they want to attend law school or to undergraduates who just want to consider it.

If you intend to prep for a test, you need to dedicate some time and a few dollars. If you really feel you are deficient, perhaps you need a course, but if you simply need practice, you may wish to start with this book. I would also recommend buying some other books, other "brand" names included, to work with. The more you practice these tests, the more confident you will feel with your ability to not only answer the questions, but answer them within the allotted time frame. For example, I took a real life test a while back. I only took one practice test prior to the actual one and because I haven't taken any tests in some time I went over the time limit. When I was taking the "real" test, time was called just as I finished. You need to be honest in accessing your own skills. This book is not going to teach you anything new, but is intended to help you with your test taking strategies and give a general overview of what types of questions you can expect. The questions are from actual tests.

This is not a book that teaches emotional strategies to keep you as stress free as possible, but rather one that will put you through the paces and make you think. As an aside, did you know that "The median LSAT scores accepted by the best law schools in the country, such as Yale, Stanford, and Columbia, range from the high 160s to the low 170s." That translates to a percentile figure of 95 and up." Interspersed throughout the book are icons that give you little warnings, indicate things you may wish to remember, tips, and technical information. Excellent intro, but if you really want to get into law school, you'll should do yourself a favor and purchase a wide variety of practice tests to work with.

Well structured, simple & clear text & graphics, compact

The ISBN 1118678230 (LSAT For Dummies, 2nd ed.) is a very well published and competent textbook for beginners. Though it covers all aspects with much fewer questions/examples than exclusively 1-aspect textbooks published by Manhattan Pre and Kaplan, it still contains enough questions to sufficiently check the preparation to LSAT.

Its 432 pages of a larger than the standard size for the series are clearly divided into 7 parts and 22 chapters, and contains over 1000 multiple (4-5) choice questions/problems. Some questions/problems are preceded by a short description. A few other include schematics from various disciplines. The B&W schematics are simple and well drawn. The question numbers are boldfaced allowing to easier grasp the pages at 1st glance. After the initial reading, it can be used just for warming up.

The front pastedown (endpaper) contains a scratch off access code to more practice tests online on the companion website. Approx. 35 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on decent paper, and the flimsy soft covers, which are typical for the series, are prone to creasing.

Good For Someone Considering Whether They Want To Take The LSAT And Begin The Law School Admissions Process

I've become a fan of the "For Dummies" series that seem to now cover almost every subject area. As is obvious from the name this edition is a guide for those considering taking the LSAT test as a first step in applying to law school. As with other "Dummies" books this is an easy to read, low anxiety guide, written in a breezy witty tone that does offer some valuable information but it is not the only LSAT guide a prospective legal student will want to use if they are serious about scoring highly. One of the best features the buyer receives from purchasing this guide is a year of access to online LSAT sample tests.

Never been so displeased with a textbook.

To say I was disappointed with this book would be a complete and total understatement. I only gave it 1 star because I had to put at least 1, but I definitely would have put zero if it were allowed. Nearly half of the book was missing and it was very important pages that I actually really needed. I had to borrow a friend or my teacher's book almost daily (good thing she was nice about it). I ended up failing my lab final because I physically didn't have the material to study. Lesson learned: NEVER BUY LOOSE LEAF BOOKS USED. Will never make that mistake again.

Selma led her to the doorway of the beautiful hand-carved marble summer pavilion that stood in the center of the courtyard, and ducked through the entry first. Mumtaz followed, and again her eyes had to adjust. A small figure stood in the middle of the spacious pavilion lit by the sun filtered through the intricate latticework of the screens that formed the walls. Mumtaz took two steps forward.�

“My Mumtaz,” said Shabanu and held her arms open. Mumtaz turned her head toward Selma, not quite believing her eyes and ears.

“Is it my mother?” she asked Selma, who nodded, her face opening in an encouraging smile. Mumtaz looked back toward her mother in disbelief, unable to move. For a moment she just stared.

“I’ve waited so long to see you,” said Shabanu, moving toward her daughter. “I couldn’t tell you I was here, and all the while I was living just to see you again.” Mumtaz couldn’t find her voice and her feet felt planted in the stone floor. Shabanu approached her slowly and put her arms around Mumtaz. “I’ve dreamed of holding you every minute since the last time,” Shabanu said.

“I don’t understand!” Mumtaz said, unaware that tears streamed down her face. She stood rigidly and Shabanu continued to hold her. “You’ve been here all this time?” Mumtaz asked. “And you let me believe you were dead?”

Doesn't live up to its predecessors

When reading this book, I felt as if its relation to the first book in the trilogy (the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu") was something like the relationship of "Scarlett" to "Gone With the Wind." Whereas the first two (wonderful!) books focus on Shabanu and the intricacies of life in Pakistan and Pakistani society, "The House of Djinn" bounces its focus to Mumtaz and the heretofore unknown Jameel, while Shabanu herself appears barely twice. While the first two books are rich with detail on the landscape, cities, rituals, and intrigue, this book jumps clumsily from scene to scene, name-dropping skateboard tricks.

I remember being left on the edge of my seat when "Haveli" ended, and after growing impatient with years of waiting for a resolution, visiting the author's website and discovering that she had never planned to write a third book at all. This felt akin to Tolkien's simply ending his books at the Two Towers with "Frodo was alive, and taken by the enemy." I was horrified. I couldn't have been happier when she decided to write this book to resolve those missing questions. Alas, the book is so rushed and thin on detail that it's almost as if it was written by someone else. It does NOT read like the grandchild of the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu." I didn't connect with a single character in the book, even the ones I'd liked before. I'm bitterly disappointed...she resolved the issues only technically, as if saying "here's your book, now leave me alone."

A final thought: this is the fourth book I've read by Suzanne Fisher Staples, and I've come to notice that every single one of them (the Shabanu trilogy and "Shiva's Fire") seem to end right in the middle of the climax. While open endings are appropriate for some stories, after a while it starts to feel lazy. Finishing her books with no sense of closure is jarring.

Enjoy "Shabanu" and "Haveli," but stop there.

A Bit Disappointing....

I first read the two previous books in the series several times. I was excited when i heard that the final book was being released some years later. This book isnt really up to level as the other books. It struck me as a bit strange and left me thinking if the same writer wrote "Haveli" and "Shabanu". This book leaves as much unfinished as the second ending, and is just disappointing and more childish than the other two books. You would have thought that the book would have come to some conclusion. It is all entertaining, i suppose, until u meet the end, which leaves you extremely disappointed. The real story ends at Haveli. This is no where on the level of the other two. If you are REALLY curious about what happens read it. This tarnishes the characters.

Good, but just not up to par.

I read the first two books in this series several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them. When I purchased this book I reread the first two books to refresh my memory of the story, then immediately went on to read this one. While the story itself was good, I was highly disappointed in how this book matched the first two. There were several discrepancies between the first two books and this; glaring mistakes, particularly about deaths, that left me wondering if Suzanne Fisher Staples had written this book without reviewing her prior works. I was also disappointed in the style of writing - despite being intended for young adults, I, now in my mid-20s, still enjoyed the first two books and felt drawn into them. This third book felt written by a much less experienced writer; someone who'd not yet written a great book and thus had no idea of what a great book could contain. Don't get me wrong - if you read the first two books, by all means read this one as well. Just don't be surprised if you're left feeling disappointed and empty at the end.

About the Author

Writer and illustrator Mark Pett lives in Mississippi with his wife, two children, and a very old dog named Catfish. Every February, the family draws five random digits from a hat and travels to whatever zip code it makes. He has illustrated several books and is the creator of the syndicated comic strips Mr. Lowe and Lucky Cow. Gary Rubinstein teaches high school math by day and is occasionally a comedian by night. In addition to co-authoring this book, he has written two guidebooks for new teachers. He lives in New York City with his wife, Erica, and his daughter, Sarah.

For Beatrice Bottomwell, Friday began like any other day.

She matched her socks. And, of course, she put her shoes on their proper feet.

She remembered to feed her hamster, Humbert, his favorite food, broccoli. And when she made a sandwich for her brother Carl's lunch, she used exactly the same amount of peanut butter as jelly.

When she stepped outside to greet her fans, she didn't forget to say "good morning" and "thank you."

They asked if she made her bed. She had.
They asked if she forgot to do her math homework. Nope.
"What about tonight's talent show?" they asked. "I'm ready!" said Beatrice with a smile. After all, her juggling act had won three years in a row.

Most people in town didn't even know Beatrice's name.

They just called her "the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes," because for as long as anyone could remember, she never did.

Great lesson tucked into a fun book

Beatrice Bottomwell is famous in her town, though most people don't have any idea of her real name. She is known simply as "the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes." Beatrice is ultra careful and methodical and quite enjoys her error free life. Still, solid perfection must be a lot of pressure for a little girl.

When Beatrice arrives at school each morning, she is perfectly put together, with her homework ready to turn in. She has won the Graysville talent show three years in a row with her juggling act, and feels quite confident about adding a fourth year to her name. Beatrice's little brother Carl is not famous, as his typical day includes a whole raft of mistakes. He eats his crayons (non-toxic!) and draws with his green beans.
On the morning of the talent show, something very unusual happens. Beatrice almost makes a mistake. While carrying four eggs from the refrigerator to the counter, she slips on a stray piece of rhubarb and .... airborne eggs! Scrambling, reaching, and grabbing - Beatrice manages to nab all four eggs safely to retain her title of the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes. No shells were cracked, no yolks were spilled, and yet Beatrice can't help thinking of her close call. Could she make a mistake?

That night at the talent show, Beatrice performs her usual juggling routine. Everyone expects her usual perfection. Instead, there is a mishap that results in the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes standing on stage, soaking wet, covered in pepper, with a hamster flat on her head. This was her first mistake and it was a big one. Beatrice is shocked, the crowd is stunned.Then Beatrice starts to laugh - a mistake is not the end of the world.

I don't think any real attempt was made to disguise the obvious lesson, which is fine by me. Children need to learn to deal with failure. If they cannot grasp that concept, they will become paralyzed by fear, which will keeping them from trying new activities. After Beatrice's mistake, she starts living more carefree. Taking a page from Carl's book, she acts sillier and consequently has a lot more fun. Of course that is am important lesson for kids to learn. Who better to teach it than Beatrice Bottomwell and her hamster?

For adults too -- so touching it's eerie

I am an adult and I picked up this book because I saw it sitting somewhere while I was waiting for someone. This may sound overdramatic, but as I read the book, I couldn't help feel like it was also written for adults, for people--or women--like me. I guess it's the old saying that a good children's book will speak to the parent just as much as the child. I think I got a little flushed reading it, had to put it down, could feel myself getting emotional.

I have always been that girl, the one whose identity as a child and as an adult has somehow been wrapped up in how I "never" make "mistakes." I can't believe this book isn't already a hit among adults, passing it on to each other when something goes wrong at work, or in life, as a simple (and funny) way to say "hey, relax. you're really good at what you do, but everyone f***s up."

I think I'm going to buy a few copies, just to give to my friends when they start beating themselves up over something they did wrong. Thank you, to the authors, for writing this book.

I am an elementary school counselor and I teach lessons around the message that it's okay to make a mistake and we all make them. Most importantly - how to recover from a mistake! Kids are working hard everyday practicing and acquiring new skills in so many areas. Part of growing up is learning how to deal with making a mistake. This is a brand new book to my shelf so I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet. It's going to be a HIT. No doubt about it because of the empowering message. Kids need to hear it's absolutely OKAY to flub up because as we say in our school: Mistakes are opportunities for learning. Mistake DOES NOT mean failure or there is something wrong with you. Sometimes children get that stuck in their heads. You're going to appreciate this new one. It's well written with great illustrations.
