Good, Not Great, Compendium of Military Leaders

This is a good, not great book. While there are some very good stories regarding leaders, the analyses are somewhat superficial. This is likely a function of the word limits provided to the contributors. I felt like I was reading awards citations written by fawning subordinates about leaders who are just a little "too perfect". The fact is that some of these leaders had faults that are simplistically over-looked but important to consider in any serious leadership discussions. This is a primer for introducing key leaders but should be used with care since it does not provide the depth necessary to critically analyze the leadership used by the subjects. It is a level above "Wiki" knowledge but does not substitute for in-depth biographies.

Good bio sketches; poor leadership studies

The book is a good book to help military officers study successful leaders, and possibly motivate these officers to grow, but that's about the extent of its utility.

The book is based on the trait theory of leadership, and each chapter illustrates a trait through the story of a general. Two problems; one, most in behavioral science have moved past the trait theory of leadership (about 70 years ago), and two, the bios sometimes feel shoe-horned to fit the trait being described.

Not a bad book, but not great either.

George Washington was the highlight of this book!

A visitor to New York can step back in time and touch our Colonial and Revolutionary past with a tour of Fraunces Tavern on 54 Pearl Street in lower Manhattan. In this haunt of old New York you will find a selection of draft beers, oysters, and American history. This is a beautifully-restored colonial tavern that was founded by Samuel Fraunces in 1767. It was in the Long room of Fraunces tavern in 1783 that General George Washington bade an emotional farewell to his officers after winning victory in the American Revolution. He had hoped to retire peacefully to his farm at Mount Vernon. It was not to be.

George Washington was the "indispensable man" of the American Revolution. He led the nation in a long struggle against the greatest military power of that age -- the British Empire. The American Revolution has proven to be by far the most successful Revolution in human history. It is the Revolution whose reverberations that continually encourage the cause of human liberty are felt to this day.

At the heart of this Revolution was a leader of exceptional integrity. He shared the sufferings of the men under his command at Valley Forge and throughout the Revolution. On March 15, 1783 Washington addressed his officers in Fraunces Tavern thus: "I have never left your side one moment...I have been the constant companion and witness of your Distress, and not among the last to feel and acknowledge your merits...I have ever considered my own Military reputation as inseparably connected with that of the Army."

Some of Washington's officers were tempted by the prospect of using their military superiority to the over the rings of the Colonial government. They wanted him to become an American Caesar. Washington rebuffed those who sought to "overturn the liberties of our Country". He demanded that they do nothing "which, viewed in the calm light of reason, will lessen the dignity and sully the glory you have hitherto maintained."

At the conclusion of the war the Continental Congress was essentially broke. His officers feared that neither they nor their men would be paid. Washington sought to reassure his officers with a densely written text explaining the nation's financial difficulties. He pulled his spectacles out of his pocket to read more easily and remarked, "Gentlemen, you must pardon me, I have grown gray in your service and now find myself going blind."

In 1783 New York was the nation's capitol. George Washington formally resigned his commission on 23 December, 1783. He addressed the president of Congress, Thomas Mifflin as follows: "Having now finished the whorl assigned me, I retire from the great theatre of Action; an bidding an Affectionate farewell to this August body under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission , and take my leave of all the employments of public life." Mifflin responded, "You have conducted the great military contest with wisdom and fortitude, through invariably regarding the rights of the civil government through all disasters and changes."

Not representative of the GRE Math Subject Test.

I really wanted to like this book. However, as a GRE tutor who has taken the test multiple times to keep current with its content, I'm disappointed to say that this test is nothing like the GRE Math Subject Test. Yes it covers the same topics, but it consists almost entirely of trick questions, most of which just so happen to be like the tricks taught in the author's GRE prep course (which is equally overpriced), but are mostly unlike anything you'd actually have to use on the real test. While there are still a handful of good tips to be found in this book (and the course), there's almost none of it that you can't get from Princeton Review, which remains the best prep material out there (besides the actual practice tests of course!) for the GRE Math Subject Test. Don't waste your time or money on this.

Smells fishy

Looks very sketchy. The author has been caught posting on multiple sites under fake names to promote his products. Look at what all the other reviewers have reviewed? hmm looks like they just created an amazon account to support the author and his fantastic book! Oh and the main person "Amir Alexander" who provides a testimonial on this and the other Practice tests is a History professor!

A Perfect Way to Review or Learn the Material

I am personally very impressed with the material presented in the book. The test covers every area of math that is required for the Math GRE, including calculus, analysis, linear algebra, probability theory and more. Personally, I think the questions are creative and interesting. Each question contains one (or more) key idea to know for the exam, and the material is presented in a way that really makes you think.

But I think the key part of this book is the "Solutions" section. Each question has a helpful solution in the back of the book that not only illuminates the key issue, but makes sure you know how to *quickly* find the answer during the actual exam. Even if you think you know all the material on the Math GRE, the time constraint is hard, and the tricks covered in the book are essential to completing the exam within the time limit. In any case, the solution definitely helps clarify any confusion, and reinforces what you know.

Very helpful book. I definitely recommend it.

Another adventure with the Newbys find Eric and Wanda hurtling through Brezhnev's Russia on the famous Trans-Siberian railway. From collective farms to asylums, the Newby's take you along with them on their tour.
Part endurance challenge, part history lesson the book does suffer in part by capturing Russia at its worst: food shortages, restricted travel, stern officials and windows that won't open! But the Newby's accept it all with relatively good humour and like all their adventures, they manage to find lots of interesting characters along the route. I've always been able to think of lots of reasons NOT to visit Siberia, the trans-siberian train ride might have just given me one!

I found this fascinating because of all the little annoyances the writer had to deal with being accompanied on his trip with a government official. It was a little cynical but it was done in a humorous way.

Yogesh Chavan

Yogesh Chavan is a Linux enthusiast and open source promoter, living in Pune, India. He has now been teaching operating systems, device drivers, and embedded systems in colleges and institutes for more than three years. These include the computer science department of Pune University, Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR) college, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) institute. He has about six years of experience in the software industry. His previous industrial role was of a software maintenance engineer at Red Hat Software Services. Lots of solid but disconnected information

The book covers quite a fair bit of topics on the BeagleBone series (all three versions). I have a lot of experience using Arduino's and Raspberry Pi's and was hoping this book would enable me to quickly get my skills up to par with those platforms. Unfortunately the coverage is pretty much disconnected and there isn't a lot of discussion on practical application of the topics covered. Additionally I may be overly sensitive because I read so many books but I found most of the phrasing used for the sentences very odd. This caused me to frequently need to re-read sentences to make sure I understood them. This was really distracting and ended up detracting from the enjoyment of the book. On the positive side there are some notably good sections. I really found the coverage of the UART, SPI, and I2C protocols helpful. Overall I found some value from the book but it fell short of my hopes.

The electronics theory related to these components is then explained in depth before you use them in a program. Finally, the book helps you create some real-life IoT applications.

Don't expect to buy this book and just go over it once, you'll be reading it a few times to fully understand all the material, or at least I did. I liked how the book was broken down into two sections which encompassed the overall areas of development for creating IoT technology and that was what I wanted to see in action, I wasn't disappointed.
