An homage to the greats...

Overall a good effort for a first novel. It is a wandering tale, about a bland, bumbling sort of man, where small events keep unfolding that move the plot forward, but the result is very little sustained dramatic tension. The language is not that particularly evocative, and I didn’t feel like I learned anything more in depth about a place or a time I didn’t already know. “Men of Winter” seemed like an homage to a type of novel and a region with which the author must be enthralled.

The narrator, Hektr Pastrovich is a reporter who has gone to the North Country, where war rages not too far away. He is in search of a mysterious figure, the Prince of Ithaka, who has piqued his curiosity. He does not know the man’s real name. Then on the train ride north he meets a mysterious woman who also piques his curiosity and desire, but will not share her real name. This is the first of several echoes in the novel. The others being that Hektr gets lost; multiple people, including Hektr, receive injuries to the head; and women offer him sex.

As Hektr goes about looking for vestiges of the Prince, he visits a hotel, an asylum, and stops to get a hard-won cup of coffee from a presumed grieving woman. As a savvy reader, I filed each of these scenes away assuming each would likely yield a piece of the puzzle that will get us closer to the Prince – but they don’t. In time I lost interest in the Prince, and I think Hektr did too – far more urgent is the war that is going on not too far away from the town where he is holed up in his pension (the word pension is used so frequently one could contrive a drinking game around it, surely the word lodging or boarding house would have sufficed a time or two) playing charades and chess and drinking copious glasses of vodka.
In one scene of the novel, the reader is subjected to reading sections of Hektr’s prose and poetry, which I imagine is a lot like the experience of eating his landlady’s turnip soup, it’s not very good, but it does fill the page/belly. There’s another section where Hektr and the mysterious lady from the train, Helena, (they’ve reconnected) happen across a scene of domestic violence and Helena puts stitches in the injured man’s head without batting an eye, then off they go. I imagine that scene was included only to explain Hektr’s willingness to leave Helena at the medic station at the battlefront later in the novel, since he knows she’ll be useful. Another detail that I found mildly irritating was that Hektr is semi-familiar with several great works of literature. Just enough so he knows their plot, but not the title. I assume this is done as comic relief. A literary minded reader will recognize the references to Kafka’s “Metamorphosis,” or Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”

Treat yourself to a great book!

I really enjoyed this book--on two important levels. First, it's just good storytelling. Morrissey achieves this through his creation of intriguing characters, an engrossing storyline, and absolutely delightful prose. With Men of Winter as my companion, I even passed a very pleasurable three hours waiting for my car to be serviced, and I was actually a little annoyed when the mechanic told me they had finished because I didn't want to stop reading! So, in a nutshell, it's a great book in all the ways I generally measure the awesomeness of a novel.

But there's an extra level here for me because I know the author--sort of. I've never met Ted, but we've been friends online for about a year now. It's through FB that I learned he'd written Men of Winter, and after "getting to know him" through his posts, I became curious about the book and decided to read it--without telling him, of course. I mean, how awkward is it to see a play, hear a song, read a poem or book, etc. by someone you know, and then be in the position of lying or possibly hurting their feelings if you didn't care for it? So this is how he's finding out that I read his book. I'm so pleased that I get to proclaim that my friend Ted Morrissey wrote a fantastic book, and that I highly recommend it to all!

Men of Winter: A Haunting Journey

Men of Winter begins with a reporter's pursuit of a lurid crime story, but morphs into a recognition of painful emotional truths buried within his own heart. Hektr embarks on a sometimes nightmarish, sometimes magical journey into the frozen northland of Russia. The setting seems at once mythical and brutally realistic. Richly developed characters populate this haunting landscape, and Hektr observes each one with an alien's curiosity. Morrissey takes the reader into the mystery with the hero called Hektr; his final discovery is both touching and unexpected.

A rare gem indeed

If you are picking up this book, you most likely have read its companion, THE GOLDEN AGE. This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though.
I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing really "happens" so to speak. No adventures of overwhelming magnitude. Rather, the children's imagination governs what happens throughout the book. Small things are turned into events of great importance. Children brought up with video games will most likely be bored. But for an adult, ahhh! This is a find. It will make you yearn for the idyllic childhood you never had or anybody had for that matter.
Each chapter is like sunlight shining on a bead of dew in April. Or something similarily poetic. Grahame's the better writer anyway.

Recalls the past

I'm sorry to see that Grahame's "Dream Days" is so unavailable. It's a deeply enjoyable book that demonstrates the power of "stories" to pull us out of the here and now and make us to stand up straighter, to imagine ourselves as knights and ladies. Grahame's book would be great for older children (young ones may find themselves fidgeting - there is a certain amount of description and archaic language). Adults may actually enjoy this one more than kids. Reading it brought back to me the days of my youth, when a good story could fire my imagination for days, and the characters lived right along side of me, as sort of doppelgangers. This story reminds me of E. Nesbit, another great Edwardian children's writer. Children should read these books, they are well-written and can help foster a love for the "right word" and the well-turned phrase. Try to find a copy with Parrish's illustrations. This whole book is just a wonderful aesthetic experience.

A delightful surprise

I admit it: I bought the Wordsworth paperback edition of this book for one reason -- its cover. Not being a great fan of Wind in the Willows, I was a little leary of what I'd find inside, but have discovered that Grahame's use of language and subtle depiction of character are quite delicious. This would be great for reading aloud to a bright child who enjoys words. That said, it would have to be a child with a sophisticated sense of humour: while Grahame describes everything from the viewpoint of a child's imagination, I get the feeling he's really smiling at the adults over the top of said child's head. I can't wait to read The Golden Gate, which Grahame published a few years before this book.

The paintings were beautiful and really made an impression on me

I just finished viewing this exhibition at the Getty Center and was very impressed. The paintings were beautiful and really affected me. I figured I'd check out the official book but was extremely disappointed as I flipped through it. The reproductions are just not good at all. Some of the best paintings in the show look completely different in this book. They're flat and dull and lifeless when the actual paintings are colorful and full of contrast and drama. It was really, really disappointing. I'm not sure if any of the other books on Turner are any better as I haven't had a chance to look at any physical copies, but I hope so, because I'd really like to be able to study reproductions of his paintings again in the future.

Went through the book at deYoung. Turner's painting is monumental. The book is of good size and the pictures are small and even tiny at times. Reproduction is poor. There is more emphasis on what is to be said about Turner than on the painting. Boo. I did not choose to purchase.

Great Pastoral Counseling Resource

Ronald E. Hawkins, "Strengthening Marital Intimacy" was a concise and interesting look at God's design for marriage and what intimacy in marriage - according to God - is. In the opening chapter the author says, "God created male and female to function as a team and share the joys of God's creation. Satan drove a wedge between them, and over the centuries males and females have been locked in a tragic power struggle."

How true it is that discovering intimacy in marriage is an often sought after and seldom discovered reality in the lives of believers and non believers alike. We are all victims of the fall of humanity into sin and self indulgence. The author goes on to point out that it is in fact God's desire for couples to operate at the level of spiritual unity and intimacy. The biggest trouble though is that people have been conditioned to misunderstand what intimacy really is.

There are many people who live under the mistaken impression that intimacy is primarily or even solely a physical reality but this is simply not the case. God has intended for couples to live in a condition of spiritual intimacy, intimacy of the soul or intellect, as well as physical intimacy. A primary barrier to intimacy that is pointed out by the author is anger which gets in the way of an intimate relationship. People do not respond in close and loving ways to others who explode at them in anger or rage.

Commitment is the base upon which solid marriages are built. Particularly in a biblical sense, commitment is something far greater than merely an emotional response to feeling dedicated to another individual. A Marriage is a contractual obligation that each partner enters into with the other partner. This commitment is an active commitment which entails numerous activities and responsibilities on a continual basis. The marriage does not happen at the moment of the saying of vows and the giving and receiving of rings! That is merely the stepping off point in a new adventure together.

In order to build and sustain a life long lasting committed and intimate relationship a couple must be firmly grounded in the wisdom that God has revealed in order to enable couples to make good choices and wise decisions as they travel the journey of this life together. God has given the ultimate revelation of this wisdom in His Son, Jesus Christ. A couple that looks to Christ as the source of all wisdom for marriage and for godly living will find the strength, wisdom, and encouragement necessary to create intimacy within the home. A couple that looks to their wisdom apart from Christ is not likely to find success in these areas.

In order to create a marriage which is satisfying and nurturing, each couple must have an outward and obvious commitment to companioning. If each partner in a marriage is going in a different direction in life then true intimacy can never be achieved and will never be maintained. Couples who have committed first and foremost to being one another's companion in relevant and obvious ways are most likely to enjoy all that God intended their marriages to be!

I am inclined to agree very much with the author in what he has spoken in this work. Marriage is a process of continual commitment to one another and intimacy can not be achieved through a one weekend seminary in and of itself - it is a process of continual growth and commitment to Christ and to one another. In the home where this commitment is clear and obvious and in the home where Christ is free to reign in the hearts and lives of couples, then He will be glorified in a healthy and intimate marriage, Where the Scriptures and their author are excluded the opposite will most likely be the case.

I found particularly helpful the section of the book where the author reminds us of the important aspect of understanding the other person in the marriage. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of forgetting that the other person is not an extension of your hopes and desires but is a person with hopes and desires him or herself. "It takes a conscious effort to understand your spouse. You must appreciate the physical, intellectual, emotional, volitional, and spiritual dimensions of his or her personality."

In reading this work I was reminded of the importance of having a daily commitment to knowing and loving my spouse. This was not a life changing experience for me but it was a helpful reminder and a bolstering of already held convictions. In that way, it was a very positive experience and a helpful addition to my knowledge and commitment to strengthening the intimacy within my marriage and in my work as a local church Pastor.

I recommend this book strongly to pastors, lay counselors, and professional Christian counselors alike.
