Informational, Inspirational, and Enlightening!

I found this book in a search to better understand the power that comes with speaking in tongues. The writer gives lots of scripture throughout the book to support his views and also gives very powerful and compelling personal experiences for himself and others. It helped to strengthen my understanding and belief that this truly is a gift from God and one to be desired. It gives some direction in the use of tongues in your prayer life and explains the difference in the prophetic tongue and the prayer tongue. I think this book will become foundational for those who believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues or those who simply want to better understand it. I have already told others about this book and will keep it in my personal library.

Amazing journey that changed my life into new and fresh style!

You see, this book's title is something careful many
churches and the body of Christ have been evading to give
crystal-clear answer that will satisfy our curiocity.

Despite the fact that I am a Christan who was to believe in
Jesus as soon as I came of of my mother's womb, there was some spiritual thirst that none of the ordinary methods in time-honored church's community could not quench at all.

From the time when I was even in elementary school,
I wished to meet Jesus personally not doctrinally.
The very burning desire I had in my deep spirit was kindled
by this life-changing book.

In a nutshell, this book is a life-chnaging book giving tremendous help and profound teaching and lesson to readers!

Actually, 'speaking in tongues' is something careful that many
Christians and even some pastors are reluctunt to mention
in their sermons.
Unfortunately, I was taught that 'speaking in tongues' was
none other than something special given to
those who don't have big and deep faith by the Holy Spirit who wants them to have conviction about their faith.

When I went to a Christianity bookstore, I found this book
titled .
My heart was throbbing at the time because I was not quite sure about whether buying it was what God wanted me to buy.

But at the time, I was rather sensitive about hearing the voice
of God and I received a spiritual impression telling me that
God was pleased with me who wanted to get it.

So I bought it and began to devour it day after day.

As soon as I had read some part in this book,
I was fascinated by this lovely book!
This book is full of gripping and interesting story.
Each of the stories are amazing and interesting enough to draw
your attention!

Furthermore,this book is not swayed toward unbiblical direction
at all.
Instead, this book will provide you with practical knowledge
and information that are totally biblical.

'Speaking in tongues is somethig careful to many Christians
and there are not so many books dealing with the topic.
But this book, 'The hidden power of speaking in tongues',
is really good and wholesome book giving biblical information
to readers, I guess.

I found this book to be very helpful,esspecialy the way each chapter was broken down to bite size chapters that were easy to understand,and the importance of praying in tongues,as well as praying in English(my native tongue)I recomend this book to all who are seeking a fresh impouring of HOLY SPIRIT and to those who have just become Christians and want to know more about God Jesus and Holy Spirit.

yes, it is big...but it fills the need as well.

without opening it, you would think that the secrets of the world were contained therein. as a reference tool, it is invaluable - it is comprehensive. everything from oil cracking to storage to...whatever. its in there!
i borrowed my professor's copy for a couple of weeks and everytime i had to lug the thing around (in my backpack), i felt i'd tip over by its weight. its strictly a DESK reference book.
for the curious: the book is a well written and easily understandable book with plenty of value to the petro-engineer or theresuch.

The Petroleum Engineering Handbook is an excellent general introduction to the engineering associated with oil and gas exploration and development, gathering together in one place most of the basic engineering issues, challenges and resolutions.

That's no moon. It's a space station!

No, It's too big to be a space station. On my kitchen scale it came in at 8.9 lbs. And the pages are onion thin. There are 59 chapters. If you drop this tomb on your toe, it's a hospital trip.

It is the only book that dared an all-in-one petroleum engineering reference (Mian's Handbook used two volumes). Published by SPE in 1987, it was the final attempt by SPE to make a single text. It has since been replaced by a 6 volume series.

While this book has been "replaced", it really hasn't. The six volumes are completely different. This book? Concise, crisp, and tight editing. The new version? Sprawling, disjointed, and uneven. So in truth there really is no replacement for this book. It's the last of it's kind, and you can see that by the price tag. And it's now very dated.

Positives:
a) Crisp. The target was to simplify, not teach. It's a reference book, not a textbook. Less math, more "bullet points".
b) Clear diagrams. One would think the pictures would suffer due to space limitations, but the printing is actually quite good.
c) Fairly comprehensive (to 1987). It even has things the newer books don't: on metering, core sampling, and hydrate formation charts.
d) Brilliant editing. Bradley knew exactly what to include and what to drop.

Negatives:
aa) Published in 1987. Dated! A part of the book is tables of numbers from the pre-desktop computer days, for goodness sake.
bb) Much useful information was left out, simply because it had to be.
cc) Both a strength and weakness, the book has very little "textbook" stuff one often needs from a reference.
dd) Too big. Pages are too onion thin. No tabs.

The largest negative for this book? The SPE is no longer using it as its official reference. Therefore if you are taking the Professional Petroleum Engineering Exam this book is probably not going to work out very well as your primary reference. When I took the exam recently I brought this book (with 50 others!) yet ever even opened it.

I am very sorry SPE has not continued this style of book; I was given mine by an engineer who recently passed away. While I sure don't plan on selling it, I use it less and less each year...while I curse, yet grudgingly use, the new 6 volume series.

Christ Sutras is a significant spiritual work...

This book is so special I feel compelled to write my first and only unassigned book review in 63 years

Christ Sutras is inspirational.

The author, Bart Marshall, an awakened spiritual teacher, conveys his exceptional honesty, insight, sensitivity and intuition to this work. He combines, organizes, edits and, where warranted, enhances the meaning of every saying, both biblical and apocryphal, attributed to Jesus. These are expertly organized according to topics into 42 sermons. 20 of which are not in the New Testament. Frankly, I was astonished by the clarity, vibrancy, depth and poignancy of these sermons. They invoke a spiritual presence. Each sermon is rich and takes time to digest. Reading one sermon each morning and/or evening may be best.

Christ Sutras has universal appeal.

I am not a historian, nor a Christian, but have studied religion since grade school. This book brings life and meaning to the teachings of Christ like none other I have read. Christ's sermons are unique in delivery and vocabulary, but the symmetry, similarity and parity of Christ’s message to and with all known religious-spiritual-mystical teachings and teachers throughout time, including Buddha, is simply and stunningly apparent.

Christ Sutras is powerful.

The essential quality of this work is the sense of immediacy and feel of authenticity in the sermons. A reader may notice an easy resonance with the teachings in Christ Sutras which open possibilities. Spiritual understanding and inspiration is possible. Some may even find the initial impetus to have a spiritual life. The importance of this possibility cannot be overstated. The books that contain it are rare. Christ Sutras is one of them.

Christ Sutras is essential reading.

The magic of this book must be attributed, in large part, to the way Bart Marshall fashioned it. Christ Sutras is created with the same focus, diligence and brilliance as his previous book, The Perennial Way, an excellent compilation of translations of many seminal eastern titles reworked as only one with his measure of love, understanding and insight could successfully attempt. Every stanza in Christ Sutras is a prayer, a meditation, an invitation. Whether your interest is in Christianity, religion, spirituality, humanism or poetry you should read this book, and not just once, and/or give it to someone else. It should be on everyone’s nightstand. In my humble opinion, Christ Sutras should supplant Gideon's Bible. It is a monumental work!

Very good compilation but problematic.

Christ Sutras is a unique and valuable contribution to the study of Jesus and his teachings. Bart Marshall has done an excellent job of bringing together all his well known and lesser known sayings.

However, there are two fundamental problems for those of us interested in Jesus’ life. One is that the lack of certainty about what he actually said; the other is the lack of internal consistency among the wide range of sayings attributed to him.

Some years ago there was a cover story on Time magazine that reported on a large conference of Bible scholars, including what were considered the top three in the world. Their job was to read and vote on all the sayings of Jesus in the four gospels. Under the category of “Did he actually say this statement?” there were zero votes! Under the category of “He might have said this” there were only 20% of the scholars saying yes.

When I read the Christ Sutras I found sayings that varied from the sublime to the judgemental. Of the latter here is an example:

“ Truly, I will cast her (Jezebel) onto a bed of suffering,

and those who commit adultery with her will be thrown into

great tribulation unless they repent of her ways.

36.24

I will strike her children dead. And all the churches

will know that I am he who sees the mind and heart,

and who will assign to each of you what your deeds deserve.

36.25

I find it impossible to believe that a loving Jesus would make such a statement (and there are quite a few other similar statements in the Christ Sutras).

As such the teachings in this book lack consistency, so one needs to act as one’s own editor as it does contain some wonderful sayings.

For myself I find consistent sayings of Jesus in the book A Course in Miracles which contains over 700 Bible corrections. I will finish by contrasting a passage from the Christ Sutras with a related passage in A Course in Miracles.

Christ Sutras:

Do not think that I come to bring peace on earth.

I come not to bring peace but a sword.

I come to "set a man against his father,

a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law

against her mother-in-law," and so it will be that

"a man's enemies will be those of his own household."

A Course in Miracles:

T-6.I.13. The message of the crucifixion is perfectly clear:
 Teach only love, for that is what you are.
T-6.I.14. If you interpret the crucifixion in any other way, you are using it as a weapon for assault rather than as the call for peace for which it was intended. The Apostles often misunderstood it, and for the same reason that anyone misunderstands it. Their own imperfect love made them vulnerable to projection, and out of their own fear they spoke of the "wrath of God" as His retaliatory weapon. Nor could they speak of the crucifixion entirely without anger, because their sense of guilt had made them angry.
T-6.I.15. These are some of the examples of upside-down thinking in the New Testament, although its gospel is really only the message of love. If the Apostles had not felt guilty, they never could have quoted me as saying, "I come not to bring peace but a sword." This is clearly the opposite of everything I taught. Nor could they have described my reactions to Judas as they did, if they had really understood me. I could not have said, "Betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" unless I believed in betrayal. The whole message of the crucifixion was simply that I did not. The "punishment" I was said to have called forth upon Judas was a similar mistake. Judas was my brother and a Son of God, as much a part of the Sonship as myself. Was it likely that I would condemn him when I was ready to demonstrate that condemnation is impossible?
T-6.I.16. As you read the teachings of the Apostles, remember that I told them myself that there was much they would understand later, because they were not wholly ready to follow me at the time. I do not want you to allow any fear to enter into the thought system toward which I am guiding you. I do not call for martyrs but for teachers. No one is punished for sins, and the Sons of God are not sinners. Any concept of punishment involves the projection of blame, and reinforces the idea that blame is justified. The result is a lesson in blame, for all behavior teaches the beliefs that motivate it. The crucifixion was the result of clearly opposed thought systems; the perfect symbol of the "conflict" between the ego and the Son of God. This conflict seems just as real now, and its lessons must be learned now as well as then.

WOW! If you are looking for an amazingly insightful and enlightening book please read "Christ Sutras."! I can not say enough about this collection of Jesus's sermons. The author Bart Marshall is the first to combine Jesus's sayings from the New Testament along with the hidden Apocrypha, Words of the Christ that were purposefully hidden away and kept from the masses. Here, in this beautifully interpreted book, we get to know the Truth about Christ, receiving the wholeness and entirety of his sermons. There are moments while sitting with this book, that I am so moved to tears by the Brilliance of the Christ that I stop to wonder over his light and abundant love... In doing this, I come to know the Truth of my own light and abundant love...

Enlightenment the easy way...

Given the success of the first volume, 'Politically Correct Bedtime Stories', James Finn Garner took another journey into fairytale land to find a revisionist's dream of reframed stories, and assembled them into the volume 'Once Upon a More Enlightened Time'. Like the first volume, this one holds nothing sacred, highlighting both the excesses of prejudice in the past while exposing the excesses of the politically correct currents of today.
Once again, the tone is set from the start in the Introduction by Garner: 'At the outset, I would like to apologise sincerely for the success of my last book. The number of trees that voicelessly gave their lives so that my resource-greedy publisher and I could meet retail demand was truly appalling, and quite likely contributed to the global warming that gave those of us in the Northern Hemisphere such an unseasonably warm winter.'
Garner misses the opportunity here to remind us of the disparity of wealth between hemispheres, but beyond that, he doesn't miss much. The titles of the stories will give you insight:
- A Politically Correct Alphabet
- Hansel and Gretel
- The Ant and the Grasshopper
- The Princess and the Pea
- The Little Mer-persun (Mer-maid is a demeaning title)
- The Tortoise and the Hare

- The City Mouse and the Suburban Mouse (the countryside having been ravaged and now no longer exists close to cities; the country mouse has become suburban)

B is a Beast with its animal rights
C was a Cripple (now differently abled)
D is a Drunk who is 'liquor-enabled'
and so forth...
Garner hastens to add that, of course, the traditional ordering of the letters does not in any way imply that 'A' is more better or deserving a letter than X, Y, or Z.
Garner's publicity blurb says that he is called 'a master of the tour de force' by The Washington Post and 'a smart-alec, mealy-mouthed creep' by The London Daily Telegraph, yet feels the truth lies somewhere in between.
These stories will be loved by anyone who doesn't take life too seriously. Nothing is sacred here--be prepared to find something in yourself in here.

That Tortoise used Performing Enhancement Drugs

This sequel to Politically Correct Bedtime Stories introduces the reader to more politically correct fairy tales. Hansel and Gretel and the Tortoise and the Hare are my favourites. This is on par with the first book but avoid the next book in the series Politically Correct Holiday Stories as it does not live up to the standards of these two. Also read Apocalypse Wow by the same author.
Other great versions of fairytales can be found in Once Upon a Crime and the book called Whatever happened to...? The Ultimate Sequels.

Fun, but just more of the same

Given the popularity and originality of Garner's previous work, "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories," a sequel was all but inevitable. But the brilliance of that first effort was in its freshness and surprise. Now that the feline animal companion is out of the bag, another book on the same topic was bound to be disappointing.

Garner rewrites old fairy tales (Hansel and Gretel, The Little Mermaid) and fables (The Ant and the Grasshopper, the Tortoise and the Hare) to echo the sensitivities of the far, far left. He tongue-in-cheekedly uses spellings that avoid the word "man" ("persun" for "person," "wommon" for "woman,") and has his heroes and heroines (excuse me, she-roes) adopt anti-capitalist, pro-environment and pro-animal rights stances. But (sigh) it has all been done before. What Garner needed to do was to take his lampoon to a new level. He accomplishes this one time, with "Puss in Boots," a satire on the American political system, in which artful consultants spin empty-headed candidates into electoral gold.

Garner is a clever man, a skilled writer and a gifted satirist. This work is OK, but I'm anxious to see him move in new directions.

Jay Wells chart the current state of Old Testament questions. James M. Scott (Trinity Western), Andreas J. K�stenberger (Southeaster Baptist), G. K. Beale (Wheaton College) and Peter Stuhlmacher (T�bingen) examine the state of New Testament studies. Questions surrounding the unity of the Bible are explored by Christopher R. About the Author
Hafemann (Th.D., T�bingen) is the Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. Prior to joining the faculty of Gordon-Conwell, he served from 1995 to 2004 as the Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College and Graduate School in Wheaton, Illinois. His books include Suffering and the Ministry of the Spirit; Paul, Moses and the History of Israel; an NIV Application Commentary on 2 Corinthians; and The God of Promise and the Life of Faith: Understanding the Heart of the Bible. He has written several books, including Paul, Moses and the History of Israel and God of Promise and the Life of Faith.

The Good, the Okay, and the Unorthodox

Once in a while you stumble upon a theological book that enlightens you, edifies you, and confuses you all at the same time. This book is one of those books that does that to the reader. I will first say the positive things about the book before discussing the negatives. The book is divided into four sections dealing with the OT, the NT, the unity of the Bible, and the prospect of biblical theology in that order (so the reader will get a clear idea what the writer is discussing about).

Positives:

This book does contain some pretty good essays. OT essays by John Sailhamer and William Dumbrell were well written (Richard Schultz essay on the various modern OT theology methods might be valuable to those doing research on the OT). James M. Scott, Andreas Kostenberger, and G. K. Beale also wrote good essays from a NT perspective. Paul House's essay will make many people rethink their methods on how to do biblical theology. Graeme Goldsworthy's short essay is a nice way to top it all off by linking the importance of (correct) biblical theology with theological formation, education, and ministry.

Negatives:

Unfortunately, there are a couple of essays that are sour disappointments. The first one is Daniel Fuller's essay "Progressive Dispensationalism and the Law/Gospel Contrast" (pp. 237-48). Fuller has found another theological paradigm to attack to further his anti-sola fide agenda. Like his previous critique on Reformed covenant theology and classical dispensationalism, he argues that progressive dispensationalism also dichotimizes the law and Gospel (you could also say he has no fondness for Lutheranism and New Covenant Theology). He refutes the law/gospel dichotomy of PD by examining six "corners" of the debate. In fact, he says some things that might make traditional Protestants wearisome: "Commandments that bring mercy to those obeying them--these are laws of faith" (p. 245). Is Fuller suggesting that grace-driven law-keeping is a means of obtaining God's salvific mercy? If so, Fuller's traditionalist critics are correct when they say that he has departed from justification by faith alone (those who don't recognize this are being dishonest and inconsistent). Another essay that should cause many to worry is Ted Dorman's "The Future of Biblical Theology" (pp. 250-63). Dorman's goal of ecumenical dialogue has made him slip outside the boundaries of orthodox Protestantism. His advocacy of the "works of the Law" as "legalism" is not supported by most commentators. Also, he likes the idea of fusing justification with sanctification (p. 262). He even candidly admits that "the Reformers introduced a 'notional distinction' between justification (imputed righteousness) and sanctification (infused righteousness) where none had previously existed" (Ibid). Dorman can claim to be semi-Catholic or semi-Protestant (more accurately, he follows the view of righteousness advocated by the German school), but he definitely does not fit the bill of an orthodox Protestant.

Overall, a good work. Scott Hafemann's inclusion of the essays by Fuller and Dorman pretty much reveals where he lies on the soteriological spectrum (Hafemann follows closely with Fuller's view of the Law). Having said that, the book should be read by those interested in learning more about biblical theology and how it relates to ministry and personal sanctification.

Book was interesting but sometimes rambled on about nothing. What I appreciated most was the sincerity of the effort, but I could have been more moved if it included a more incarnational perspective.
