Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders provides evidence-based data and experience-based guidance for delivering quality long-term care to MS patients. Information on disease history, pathophysiology, and biology is included to provide clinicians with a framework for understanding current diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment strategies for these disorders. In addition to thoroughly reviewing the newest disease-modifying treatments, the authors have devoted significant focus to the symptoms that frequently manifest and their treatment options. Symptoms and functional limitations are the face of the disease for patients, and present their own set of challenges for practitioners.
The book proceeds through diagnosis (initial symptoms, criteria and classification, imaging, lab tests, and differential diagnosis), approved treatments for the various MS types including emerging therapies where appropriate, symptom management, rehabilitative issues, general health and wellness, and an overview of MS clinical trials. Special populations, societal and family issues, and related disorders that are often mistaken for MS are also covered. Dedicated chapters on neuromyelitis optica and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis incorporate newer diagnostic criteria. Because comorbidities often make the management of MS-related disability more complex, the book addresses these comorbidities as part of a comprehensive management plan.
To enhance the clinical utility, critical-to-know information and management pearls are boxed for quick reference and most chapters include lists of Key Points for clinicians, and for patients and families. Illustrations, tables, graphs, assessment scales, and up-to-date MRI imaging inform the text throughout. The treatment chapters include specific recommendations where available and highlight areas of controversy. Illustrative cases go beyond the literature to amplify clinical recommendations and provide real-world guidance for practitioners. Illustrations, tables, graphs, assessment scales, and up-to-date MRI imaging inform the text throughout.

Bottom line: This is a well written, up-to-date text that is an excellent addition to any institutional or personal library for health care professionals involved in the care of persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
How many times have I come to the above conclusion after looking at a newly acquired MS text (... and I have acquired a few over the last 30 years) ? Not often, despite many high quality MS texts available. Usually there is some aspect of the text that I find relatively lacking that prevents me from considering it a true "go-to" text. This text is different. Editors Rae-Grant, Fox, and Bethoux have pulled together 50 expert authors, representing 38 chapters, who very completely cover a wide variety of topics pertaining to MS - from historical retrospective, to theories of MS cause, to diagnosis and treatment, to complementary and alternative medical therapies, to rehabilitation, to psychosocial issues, and overall comprehensive care. Each chapter, as appropriate, emphasizes day-to-day practicality and in-clinic usability, complete with representative case illustrations. A particularly helpful stylistic aspect of each chapter is the use of frequent call-out boxes containing important summary comments, and bulleted "Key Points for Patients and Families", and separately, "Key Points for Clinicians". These highlights make for quick, targeted reading and, indeed, cover much ground with relatively little time investment. Medical texts in general would be much improved, in my opinion, if more adopted this style.
The MS field has pleasingly become a very dynamic and rapidly changing area of medicine. Consequently, new texts can often be relatively out-of-date even as they are first published. Importantly, however, MS and Related Disorders is completely up-to-date (as of July 2013) regarding current FDA-approved medical treatments for MS, and also includes accurate and up-to-date commentary on investigational treatments that may be available in the near future.
Who is this book for? Honestly, I believe that any health care professional (and professionals-in-training) involved in any aspect of MS care will benefit from spending some time with this highly readable text. Also, I even think that the more experienced of us can gain significant and important "one stop" information here as well. I certainly have. A+ recommendation.

Exceptional Guide to the Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
By Carrie M. Hersh, D.O.
This textbook offers an exceptional guide to the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and other demyelinating disorders. In the busy, and often chaotic days of the typical practicing physician, it is often difficult to tease out the important points and pearls from more lengthy MS textbooks with the patient waiting in the clinician's room. "Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders" serves as an excellent go-to source for a quick, yet comprehensive review of the diagnosis, treatment, and management of this patient population. The division of the textbook into 38 short chapters also offers the busy clinician with expeditious, helpful information in managing patients. The bulleted "Key Points for Patients and Families," and "Key Points for Clinicians," in addition to separately boxed pearls that are distributed throughout the text, also provides a stylistically pleasing presentation of crucial information.
Additionally, while most MS textbooks are now considered outdated due to the surge of new FDA approved medications for the treatment of MS, this textbook not only summarizes key information including the dosing, mechanism of action, adverse effects, and laboratory monitoring; it also describes some of the key emerging therapies for relapsing remitting MS.
I strongly recommend this book for any healthcare professional who is involved in the care of patients with MS. It is truly an enjoyable book to read and has served as an invaluable addition to my collection of MS textbooks. 5-stars!

I did not learn a single new piece of information ...
By Bravado
I did not learn a single new piece of information from this book. I practice general neurology and did 2 weeks of MS rotation during residency. Poor quality radiology images and does not address the practical issues than you will encounter in day to day practice. (e.g when someone has developed bradycardia to IV steroids what dose of oral steroids can you use, though no agreed upon dose or formulation but at least tell us what you practice in your institution). If you have a habit of reading review articles then don't bother to buy this book unless it costs $20.00. Not sure who will benefit from this book, I ended up giving this book to my nurse rather than...!
