Well Done

Richard Knaak always does a good job on these books and this one is no exception. It is somewhat irritating that it is being done in several small segments instead of all at once. It would have nice to read the entire storyline as opposed to just a few chapters.

Quick read

I enjoyed this even though it was short. Cannot wait until book II comes out next month. I'm a huge lore fan and have all the novels, comics, short stories, graphic novels, etc and this was fun. If you are confused with this book, read Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects and then read the short story Charge of the Aspects. This short story can be found on the wow website under lore and short stories. I hope that helps and you all enjoy this as much as I!

Suddenly I understand the antipathy for Knaak's Warcraft books

I'm writing this review having just finished the fifth part of the series/novel chunks/whatever you want to call it, and I'm looking at the work as a whole. I came into it as a fan of Knaak, having enjoyed his work since the Dragonlance and Dragonrealm days. I've often heard people denigrate him for his Warcraft novels, which puzzled me. I wasn't pleased with some of the stuff in Wolfheart, but having now read Dawn of the Aspects, I understand why people hate on his books so much.

From the start, his characterizations are awful and inconsistent with other presentations of the characters. I haven't read the older Warcraft novels, so perhaps how Kalecgos was portrayed matches how he was at some point in the novels, but it certainly doesn't match where he and Jaina ended up at the end of Tides of War, which this follows both in publication date and the lore timeline. The little we see of modern day Alexstraza doesn't really match where she should be either. She attempted to withdraw from the world following Korialstraz's death. For her to do so again so quickly (especially quickly for a creature who has existed for at least ten thousand years) is ridiculous.

There are logical inconsistencies that are obnoxious as well and threw me out of what little immersion I was able to grasp from the story. For example, it's declared that the dragons are now infertile. Why would five individual dragons losing extra special powers (that of being the Aspects) render the entire species infertile? They are not the only dragons around, nor is it suggested that they are. The Aspects were not the only ones of their flights to reproduce either. It makes no sense at all. The various wars of the time during World of Warcraft has decimated their numbers, to be sure, but to suggest that there will be no more fertile eggs laid ever, from a species that was previously extremely fecund (witness the vast number of whelps present in the game), is ridiculous. There are other examples, ranging from small, but extremely stupid (Kalecgos finding the vision of another dragon ripping hungrily into a fish to be disturbing. He's a predator too, he'd eat in a similar fashion!), to huge (the big bad is described as having numerous functional limbs emerging from his body, but those left no evidence such as bones behind).

The conclusion seemed rather abrupt and rushed. I was 64% of the way through the fifth part when I realized how close I was to the end with no conclusion in sight. The story ends at about 92% (a huge section at the back of each part is given to repeating a bunch of stuff about World of Warcraft, which seems a bit silly, since who else would be reading these books?) It feels a bit off to have almost 10% of each chunk we are paying for not be part of the story.

While I appreciated the book being split up into parts instead of being asked to pay the ridiculous $10-15 they demand for each full e-book all at once (yeah, it ended up being about the same pricewise, but it felt better in little chunks), I would recommend staying far, far away. The time travel tropes are way overdone in Warcraft and the associated novels anyway, and this is so poorly written that it's not worth the frustration trying to make sense of it (hint: it doesn't) brings. It's sad to see what is overall such a noble group of beings in WoW treated so poorly both in writing and the lore it establishes.

Grade 2-5-- Another madcap tale of the Wild West from the same duo that created the rollicking Charlie Drives the Stage (Holiday, 1989). Shorty Long is in debt to everyone; when they start demanding payment, he figures death is the only way out, and fakes his demise--coffin and all. Widow Macrae isn't fooled, though, and sits up all night to watch the body. If Shorty doesn't move by morning, she'll nail the coffin and bury it. And if he does move, he pays up. As luck would have it, a group of on-the-run bandits happen upon the phony corpse and, out of respect, try to close the coffin. But to do so they'll have to trim Shorty's very long nose, and he jumps up to protest. The shocked robbers take flight, leaving their loot behind, and Shorty is saved in more ways than one. Like the earlier title, this story is carried by the exaggerated "down-home," folksy humor. And once again, Rounds' crayon-and-line drawings, rugged and comical, perfectly complement the story's kooky wit. The story itself is not as convincing or smooth as the first yarn, and the premise of faked death may be confusing to some younger literal readers. Shorty Long owes everyone money and Widow Macrae wants her money now! Shorty is afraid to pay because than everyone will want their money, too. So Shorty acts died, but Widow realizes that Shorty is not died and offers to bury him. Shorty remains still as Widow watches him into the night. Widow says she will burry him in the morning if he doesn't move by than.
The story takes a twist when a gang of outlaws show up see Shorty in the coffin. Shorty remains still even as the outlaws talk about a train they robbed and the money they stole. But wait till you see what happens when one of them suggest to cut Shorty's nose off to make him fit in the coffin. You'll have to read the book to see what happens and if Widow gets his money. You will get a laugh out of this book!

A great story and horrifying

A great story and horrifying. I hope Sybil had a satisfying life. It is a crime what was taken from her and that no one will ever pay. Fascinating how therapy has changed since 1973. Psychotherapy took years, but when the therapist finally got around to using hypnosis, progress improved. As a psychologist, I am grateful we have moved from the days of Freud's therapy techniques that were used with Sybil to a more rational model.

Even though it turns out that this isn't really a true story, it is just...messed up. I don't know how else to describe it. The level of abuse and complexity of the personalities is astounding. It's worth reading, but if you are easily upset by graphic content, you might reconsider. It is definitely a page turner!

Schreiber is brilliant at creating an atmosphere

This book has had an effect on me ever since I read it when I was in 7th grade. I really don't care what some "experts" and "professionals" say, I believe 100% that Sybil/Shirley was telling the truth. Maybe it's because I was verbally abused as a child that I can relate more to the book. Who knows? The book is so moving, so haunting at times. Schreiber is brilliant at creating an atmosphere. I could go on and on and on, but I won't. I still believe and always will.

Just wow

The movie of 9 1/2 weeks was on TV (haven't seen the movie in decades) and I noticed the line "based on the book..." I looked up Elizabeth McNeill in the Kindle book dept and bought the book. The book is amazingly well written and incredible that it is something of an autobiography. It must have taken a lot of courage to relive her experiences while writing the pages. It's a great story of the lure a D/s relationship can have and the warning of what it can do to not only one's body but soul.
It's a quick read but I don't feel like I've been cheated. I can feel the author through her words and that is enough. Intense.

not a love story at all.

I like the memoir of the writer, Elizabeth McNeill. very unusual read. It is not a love story for those of you out there considering buying it . Its more of a sad story about a regular mid 30s woman living in NYC and a guy whom you think is kinda ok, but quickly it turns dark. I think the story is based on true events in her life that happened to her for a couple months of her life, but this strange relationship messed with her finally she had enough and ended it. My personal opinion is that it could easily happen to anyone looking for love, but ending up with the wrong person. Not a happy story at all. just want to be clear about that. thank you.

Interesting perspective,but boring

I was curious about this book as I've heard so much about it. The story was interesting, how this woman allowed this man to completely dominate her, and coming from her perspective. That is why I don't give it 1 star. But too, there was pages and pages that I skipped over, like about 10 pages of her searching through his closets and drawers. I don't see what is interesting about that. I won't ever pick up this book again, as a matter of fact, I threw it away. It wasn't what I expected. I am curious to see how the movie goes, though, and will most likely rent that. It was the author's way of talking too, where you didn't know who was saying what. I can't imagine going through this though, and was horrified by what he had her do. The scene where he has her dressing as a man would have been my limit. That grossed me out. Then the prostitute scene was too much. I'm in no way a prude, but the book bored me.

Invest in yourself. Why you SHOULD or SHOULDN'T buy this book.

I would like to start with: Each review here has it's merits. The good ones AND the bad ones. Prepare for a lot of text.

Firstly about the Author:
The book was written by Mark Manson. From what I gather, he's a traveler and has helped men around the globe with psychological, sexual and 'connection' issues with women. He owns and runs the website [...] and has a few products there.

The Book:
The underlying theme I personally felt was about "investing in yourself" and being 'honest'. Having read a few PUA books, I felt this was its strong point. The book goes through a few parts, I may need to put a disclaimer here but this is how I felt about the book:

1. You are first introduced to the author and go through a few stories. One did hit the nail on the head with me. Mark then goes through different types of men and women.
2. You are then introduced to the theme of 'investing in yourself' - by investing in yourself, you reduce your 'neediness' and hence in turn become more 'attractive'. The principle is by actually having a voice, being who you want to be - you will actually find women who you want to be around, and more importantly you will most likely stand out around the crowd.
3. Mark then goes through his 3 key principles to achieve this: Honest Living, Honest Action and Honest Communication. By living who YOU want to be, by doing things that express who YOU are and by communicating YOUR honest thoughts - you will in turn become 'attractive'.

The parts that resonated with me:
1. Don't fear rejection
2. The more people you meet in life (through rejection) can only lead to meeting more people that you want to actually be with.
3. 'Demographics' - go to places where you will most likely find people you want to be with.
4. Express who you are and be proud of it.
5. Know your intentions - go out with those intentions.
6. You don't need openers. Just be yourself - 'My name is ______' works just fine.
7. Polarize people as soon as you can (shift them from attracted / not attracted )

There are other gems in the book I'm sure. After filtering in through all the reviews and comments I felt that I needed to write this review for those who are on the fence.

What to EXPECT:
1. A 'guide' to approaching women through honesty
2. A way to meet people you will most likely enjoy to be with in the future.
3. Build some confidence - get out there boy ;)
4. I want to state number 1 again: honesty is the key theme here.
5. Arguably a 'long term solution' & Arguably a more mature one?

What NOT to EXPECT:
1. This is not holy grail of knowledge, some of it is obvious. Hence why some reviews stated they knew most of this stuff. If you are living a great life (job etc), you are clear in your opinions and intentions, and you can communicate well don't bother with this book. You already got it =)
2. You won't get pick up lines, theories or openers.
3. You will not learn how to become the ultimate player - if that is your intention - there are great PUA options out there.
4. You will not attract ALL women - you will increase your chances to attract women that are more likely to be attracted in the 'real' you.
5. Numbers game. He hates it - so if you want to sleep with lots and lots of women and already doing so - read something else. Like I said - plenty of PUA books that tackle that.

Why is it NOT 5 stars?
1. You will note reviews on Amazon are very directed to how Mark has 'an agenda' in this book. I felt this agenda was that he is a bit 'against' Pick Up Artists (who don't use honesty - through tricks and things that clearly aren't who they are). Many times he will reflect on how PUAs don't use honesty and hence you won't find people for the long term. He did however state this in the book description. I don't like it when an author needs to constantly validate his method against PUAs. Just once is fine, not consistently. I also respect some PUAs I know and they are as direct as they can be - they aren't all about tricks.

2. My grammar is bad - but I am very certain this book was not proof read. It's messy and a bit over the place in terms of actual text. If you read the book, you will understand I am very strict to this sense only because he reads quite a bit of literature - he should also appreciate that paying readers expect a book that has been proof read.

3. It was not concise, when at many times it could have been. Again - I pitch this as a problem since he teaches us to be concise.

I personally liked the book - would of given it 3.5/5 (I'm going to round up here). I think its down to earth and very personal. You will see swear words, you will read Mark's stories, and you will find a gem that reminds you that you are unique. In a nutshell - it's a lifestyle book. I'm confident after reading this book I will not attract all the women in the world. I will however, find (possibly sleep with) more women that I personally want to be with. This is my personal goal though, and I prefer it this way.

Solid Guide to Being an Awesome Guy

This young author did something pretty amazing here. He wrote one of the best carrot on a string books I've ever read in my life.

To explain what I mean further, men love women and that is no secret. Not all men love leading an attractive lifestyle though. Not all men enjoy physical exercise, reading, eating right, becoming emotionally aware, or many of the other things this "guide to attracting women" teaches you you must do in order to be an attractive man. A lot of guys want easy solutions. This book explains that there are no easy solutions. I'd like to personally thank the author for laying that fact down for everyone. I hope any guys that reads this review takes one thing away from it, that there are no easy solutions and hard work is fundamental in success with your love life. This book will help you focus that hard work in ways that equal success.

A lot of books these days will sell you a shortcut method. The only shortcuts that might work don't work for very long. If you want to be an attractive man you have to work hard on yourself and get rid of a shortcut mentality completely. Women can tell when you throw a band aid over a shotgun wound that you are bleeding all over the place and that is all a lot of the information out there today is.

Another great thing about this book is it's (sadly) novel advice about vulnerability, connection, and emotional awareness. This book does a better job than any of the other men's dating advice I've read in the past 2 years explaining the rolls these things have in our growth and development as men and how working on this area of yourself will improve your love life drastically.

I really enjoyed the section on "How to be Fascinating" as well as the one on "Demographics". The polarizing section taught me a lot quickly too.

Overall I give this book 5 stars. It could have been a little shorter but considering how much bullcrap is out there that guys are reading to get girls it's not a big deal at all because it isn't a huge book full of crap. It's a huge book full of great information to teach you how to become an attractive man, relate and interact with women you find attractive, and have healthy relationships with them (as well as yourself). If the author is guilty of anything it's putting too much great information into one book and not charging you for sections of knowledge instead.

I can't wait to see what other books the author comes out with next as this seems to be his first.

If you are a guy that is having trouble with his love life, read this book immediately. Don't buy 20 different books and join a pickup lair and watch a bunch of Youtube videos. Read this book first. Evaluate where you stand as an attractive man first and understand wherever you are you can improve. can grow into a stronger state of joy, etc

A classic of spiritual development. The concept of gradually rising states of consciousness and motivation is fascinating. If we think of an angry person (like so many loud voices in the public sphere) in a negative light, we miss the fact that they are no longer mired in guilt, shame and apathy, and that anger can also be a stepping stone to the development of courage, which can then lead to pride, and thence to a certain neutrality and acceptance. Or a person who cultivates acceptance, then willingness, can grow into a stronger state of joy, etc. Each state has its negatives, but also its positive energy, which with the right encounters, can lead to much more satisfying states such as love and compassion, and higher states of peace and enlightenment. Very rich in insights and multi-faceted. No easy answers but a helpful way of understanding human dynamics.

Not for everyone, but if it is for you then get it.

First a bit about me. I have been on a growth quest for as long as I can remember. I have gone through many books and programs, finding some useful and others to be a waste of time. I am now very picky about what I will go fully into and what I will skim and discard. This is a book I went into fully.
I consider this to be a life changing book for me. While he emphasizes Applied Kinesiology at the beginning of the book it is only so the reader can understand its use as he uses it.as a 'tape measure' for the points he makes throughout the remainder of the book. On one hand he talks about how AK can be used to find the truth of a situation through giving Yes or No responses to specific questions. On the other hand he also talks about truth being fluid. If you live in Canada, the statement "January is a cold month" would be true, but if you live in Australia it would be false. A parent would teach a young child that [playing with] fire is bad, but as the child grows that same parent could teach the child the benefits of building a bonfire and how different woods will cause the flames to change color [playing with fire] is good.
I found the importance of the book to be less about kinesiology and more about the nature of consciousness, and to that end this book is filled with wonderful information, whether you agree with what is being said or not, you will grow just by reading it.
At this point I will say that I did not read this in isolation but was also reading other books on personal growth. It was an amazing experience that my three different books by three different authors on what could be considered three different subjects (though all fell under the umbrella of "personal growth") rather than offering points of contradiction all seemed to line up together to form a complete picture. My analogy would be, one book was a fine lawn, another was a beautiful shade tree, and the third a comfortable bench. Each is complete on its own but when put together they make a wonderful place to sit on a sunny day.

Not a great read nor enlightening.

There are some interesting concepts in this book. I did not find it enlightening as some people do but I have been on my own journey of discovery for 30 years and it is all old hat to me. The book is broken down into two components. The first component is spending a great deal of time proving that muscle testing works. He is not the first to do this, but I am sure he spent a great deal of time researching it so it is of value. The second component is spent on ranking human emotions on a vibratory scale. I did not find this useful whatsoever. It makes it sound like we are doomed to work slowly up a ladder to enlightenment since we are ranked at a certain level and can't escape it. He spends a great deal of time discussing each emotion, which may be helpful to some to open their eyes to their own behavior. The author contends we are stuck at some level, but based on my work, people can vary all over the place depending where they are in life. Above 200 on the scale, you switch from negative to positive emotional motivations. Fundamentally, it's just saying you need to be internally rather than externally driven. In other words, your opinions matter more than others about your actions. I felt I wasted my time reading it.
