Anyone who doubts the power of the written word to transform a life will know better after reading poet Jimmy Santiago Baca's wrenching memoir of his troubled youth and the five-year jail stint that turned him around.

When he enters New Mexico's Florence State Prison in 1973, convicted on a drug charge, Baca is 21 and has a long history of trouble with the law. There's no reason to think jail will do anything but turn him into a hardened criminal, and standing up for himself with guards and menacing fellow cons quickly gains him a reputation as a troublemaker. But there have already been hints that this turbulent young man is looking for a way out, as he painstakingly spells out a poem from a clerk's college textbook while awaiting trial or unsuccessfully tries to get permission to take classes in prison.

When a volunteer from a religious group sends him a letter, contact with the written word unleashes something in Baca, who starts writing letters and poems with the aid of a dictionary. Reading literature shows him possibilities for understanding his painful family background and expressing his feelings. Poetry literally saves him from being a murderer, as Baca stands over another convict with an illegal weapon, ready to finish him off, and hears "the voices of Neruda and Lorca... praising life as sacred and challenging me: How can you kill and still be a poet?" Baca has a year to go on his sentence, but the reader knows at that point he has made a choice that will alter his destiny.

While readers may find Baca's poetry more dazzling than this prose memoir about how he became a poet, the author still manages to capture both the reader's interest and sympathies. Baca traverses his life, starting with his childhood in rural New Mexico where both parents essentially abandoned him his adolescence in "juvee" halls and his days as a drug dealer. The story leads up to an account of five years in a maximum-security prison in Arizona, and the unusual personal transformation that occurs there through his learning to read and write; eventually, he discovers his poetic voice. The text is structured like a conversion narrative in which Baca's past symbolizes all that is unhealthy and his poetry-oriented future is filled with the hope and optimism that come from discovering something divine in the midst of darkness. The darkness is often literal, as when Baca is describing his lengthy solitary confinements. He also recounts the intricacies of prison politics, in which failure to gain respect and alliances forged with the wrong people can mean death. Oddly, certain story lines are simply dropped along the way, such as his charge that the prison was lacing his food with strong psychoactive drugs. It is too bad that Baca's prose is frequently flat ("Poetry enhanced my self-respect. It provided me with a path for exploring possibilities for life's enrichment that I follow to this day"), especially when reflecting upon abstract topics, since the content of his story is so interesting and his poetry simply shines. Poet Baca's (Black Mesa Poems) memoir reveals a complex early life. Alternately loved and abandoned by his alcoholic father and his mother, nurtured by grandparents but sent to an orphanage when his grandfather died, Baca was illiterate at 21 and unable to support himself legitimately. Beyond self-pity, however, he acknowledges his own as well as others' responsibility for his path to prison. Arrested for dealing drugs but falsely accused of shooting an FBI agent, Baca was betrayed by friends, attorneys, and the legal system. His unflinching account of his incarceration, with its brutality and occasional benevolence, reveals the paradox of prison life. Ironically, his time in solitary confinement redeemed him, prompting lifesaving memories of his rural New Mexico childhood, which ignited his ability to use language to elevate himself above his immediate surroundings. The rustic imagery is beautiful, but beautiful, too, is the sun's path down the dark prison corridor. Baca, who has temerity and talent, was ultimately released, but his narrative begs the question: How many incarcerated individuals languish in U.S. prisons, victims of a system that history may someday compare to a medieval dungeon? Worth reading from both a literary and a social perspective, this book is recommended for all public and academic libraries. I will read this book again; it sears into you

Jimmy Santiago Baca is the recipient of major awards for his raw and emotional poetry. In my opinion, these awards are more special than the average literary awards: They've been earned by a man whose literacy was truly hard won.

A PLACE TO STAND is a memoir of Jimmy's childhood of abandonment, his career selling drugs, and his time in prison. This is also an account of how an illiterate prisoner fought for the privilege to teach himself how to read--and then to write, by corresponding with Harry, a Christian man on the outside, and by writing poems for other cons in exchange for books.

This is not a pretty history. The epilogue tells the shocking tale of his mother's fate. Racism plays its usual dirty role through much of the book. And JSB's account of prison life makes most prison movies look almost civilized. (In an interview with Jimmy in a Santa Fe arts newspaper, he said that he even toned it down for this book because many people cannot accept the harsh truth of prison culture.)

A Place To Stand, by award winning poet and seasoned playwright Jimmy Santiago Baca, is the memoir of a difficult and sometimes violent life. Sent to an orphanage at a young age, encountering violence and bigotry at each turn, he became a criminal and a drug dealer. Sentenced to prison, he had to go to extreme lengths to stay alive - even slicing an attacker's stomach with a butcher knife. Though self-defense, his violent acts earned him repeated time in solitary confinement. There, struggling to resist the dehumanization of prison life, he encountered memories and revelations that transformed him and inspired him to express himself through poetry. Yet even when the end of his prison sentence and freedom beckoned, more tragedy awaited him and his family. A harrowing true story, of unbearable loss and suffering, with a final revelation offering a tiny flicker of hope. A Place To Stand is riveting, compelling, impossible to put down and highly recommended.

a EXCELLENT book

This is an excellent book. I dont read much but this book caught my attention fast. I can relate to this book alot because I grew up in some of the same sercomstances and had similar problems in life like Jimmy Santiago Baca did. And its good to know that no matter where u came from, what color or what youve been through u can pull out of the gutters and change your life like Jimmy did. It makes me proud to be Latino. I give this book 10 stars out of 5!

Not for readers new to web development!

I am not the intended audience for this book and I didn't realize that before buying it. It would be helpful if the authors identified their intended audience on the cover rather than in the very easy-to-miss section "Before you begin" on page xxxi. As the authors state, "this book is not a tutorial." Nor does it contain any tutorials. They state that minimum knowledge is the polls tutorial, but as far as I can tell the book is written for experienced web programmers with a solid background in Django who are looking for tips, tricks, and style pointers. The book is not really useful for beginners (well it wasn't for me) and that would have been nice to have known up front.

Here is a concrete example of what I am talking about. In a total of 7 pages, chapter two covers: SQL database options, pip, virtualenv, vagrant / VM, and version control options. I have made passing use of all of these, but found myself none the wiser after reading the chapter. If you are looking to _learn_ about these kind of things, rather than simply being introduced to the authors' well-informed preferences, this is not the book for you.

I read up to chapter 7 before throwing in the towel. My general opinion is that you have to already know quite a lot about what the authors are talking about before you will get much out of what they say.

Two other shortcomings (but not deal breakers) are (a) the book has so many links to other material that reading it as a hard-copy is a real drag -- it would be much better as an online resource with hyperlinks; and (b) the figures are sometimes cute but rarely helpful or insightful or useful.

That said, the book is well written, the authors certainly know a lot, and it seems like it would be a good reference for an experienced web programmer looking to improve their Django game.

A Book By Authors Who Know Both Django AND English!

Django is a great framework for Python-powered websites, but it can be hellishly confusing (ironic considering how intuitive Python is compared with most other major programming languages). It doesn't help that the official documentation is often confusing and unclear. Furthermore, what 3rd party Django books exist are mostly now out-of-date considering how quickly development has proceeded on Django. Consider that just 5 years ago Django was on version 1.2-- and the changes since then have been enormous and render make many earlier Django how-to books, even those covering versions up to 1.5 and 1.6, confusing and occasionally dangerous to use. This new version of "Two Scoops of Django" is updated for 1.8 (the current release) and, even better, is written in plain, comprehensible English, with excellent examples, code snippets, and useful tips. My only word of caution is that this isn't a great book for complete newcomers to Django-- as the authors make clear, "Two Scoops" doesn't intend to be a basic tutorial or comprehensive guide. Instead it's a well-organized collection of 'best practices', lessons learned, practical advice, and informed opinion. That said, any developer who has a basic familiarity with the framework and is planning to do further work with Django would be well-advised to add this book to their library.

Must read for anyone using Django

Even if you're already an experienced Django developer, this is great book to go over the best practices. Covers very wide range of topic, from as trivial as code layout, to as vital a security. It's not yet-another-introductory book, so you won't find parts of the book where you'd say "I already know that" and just skip.

On the other hand, if you just started with Django, this is great follow-up after reading the tutorial.

Pigs Gone Wild

I became a big fan of David McPhail's Pig books after reading his colorful and very funny "Pigs Ahoy." This earlier book again chronicles the age-old theme of man vs. pig with creative rhymes, chaotic scenes, and vivid, imaginative illustrations.

Our hero is a 30-something male who may or may not be dreaming his encounter with a gang of messy, loud pigs: McPhail cleverly leaves open the possibility that his house isn't really inhabited by scores of "black pigs, white pigs, Brown and pink pigs, Making-oatmeal-in-the-sink pigs." In any event, these apparently nocturnal pigs are busy riding skateboards, dressing up, playing in a band, and ordering 50 pizzas! McPhail's rhymes are simple but clever, and he throws in an old favorite just for good measure:

Pigs from England,

Pigs from France,

Pigs in just

Their underpants.

When the young man reads the huge pizza bill, he decides he's had his fill. The pigs beg to stay (they know a good thing when they see it) and he relents, but only if they'll clean up after themselves. Pigs will be pigs, however, and even the cleanup is full of mishaps, messes, and (one suspects) some intentional mischief. Every page of this colorful action-packed book is funny and creative. In one section, McPhail draws gigantic pigs towering over the others, their snouts proud, and their robes loud:

On the next two pages, dozens of pigs arrive at the house by ship, train, airplane (from which the pigs parachute), and "pigmobile." I thought that the narrative is not as clever as in "Pigs Ahoy," this is more Three Stooges than Marx Brothers. Still, if you just like zany, uncomplicated stories with outrageous pictures, or if you like pigs, or even if you're kind of like a pig yourself, this will fast become a favorite.

Absolutely wonderful book!

This is one of the best books for children I have read in a long time...the rhymes are clever and flow well, and the pictures are colorful and detailed enough that you find something new every time you look. The three year old who reads it with me has it memorized already and we just bought it yesterday! (Of course, we've read it about 50 times). We have read a lot of books together, and this one will be a favorite for a long time to come.

About the Author
Eugene Bardach has been teaching graduate-level policy analysis workshop classes since 1973 at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, in which time he has coached some 500 projects. He is a broadly based political scientist with wide-ranging teaching and research interests. His focus is primarily on policy implementation and public management, and most recently on problems of facilitating better interorganizational collaboration in service delivery (e.g., in human services, environmental enforcement, fire prevention, and habitat preservation). He also maintains an interest in problems of homeland defense regulatory program design and execution, particularly in areas of health, safety, consumer protection, and equal opportunity. Bardach has developed novel teaching methods and materials at Berkeley, has directed and taught in residentially based training programs for higher-level public managers, and has worked for the Office of Policy Analysis at the US Department of Interior. He is the recipient of the 1998 Donald T. Campbell Award of the Policy Studies Organization for creative contribution to the methodology of policy analysis. This book is based on his experience teaching students the principles of policy analysis and then helping them to execute their project work. Eric M. Patashnik teaches policy analysis at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, University of Virginia. He previously held faculty positions at Yale University and at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. Patashnik is a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, and the editor (beginning 2016) of the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law. He received his Master's in Public Policy degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Batten School from 2009-2012. Patashnik's research focuses on the politics of American national policymaking, especially health policy, the welfare state, and the role of Congress. He received the Jefferson Foundation Award for excellence in teaching at UVA. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Reform at Risk: What Happens After Major Policy Changes Are Enacted which won the Louis Brownlow Book Award from the National Academy of Public Administration. Earlier in his career, Patashnik was a legislative analyst for the U.S. House Subcommittee on Elections.

Still the Gold Standard

This book remains the gold standard for introducing students to key issues in policy analysis. I have used it many times in teaching Policy Analysis courses for both students and practicing policy analysts. The new edition adds a lot of helpful new material (e.g., discussions of choice architecture and an excellent new chapter on policy design) that will be helpful to students struggling to think systematically about how to assess policy alternatives. Despite its broad scope, it is still quite compact. It is too dense to have students read through for a single class session, but works very well when assigned in chunks--e.g., on selecting criteria and alternatives, assembling evidence, and learning from "smart practices" in other political jurisdictions and policy sectors. Applying the analytical framework of the Eightfold Path with empirical case materials provided by the instructor helps students develop skills in utilizing the framework. Other books like Stokey & Zeckhauser, Wheelan and Weimer & Vining concentrate on economic and technical analytical skills that are essential to policy analysis, but no other sources covers the process of policy analysis with the same depth and insight as Bardach and Patashnik.

Incredibly helpful and easy to use method for policy analysis

I used this book for my Master of Public Policy program and it really is a classic for a reason. It lays out such a helpful structure for thinking about complex policy problems, and I've even used some of the techniques in analyzing problems or policies for stories now in my job as a journalist. Bardach and Patashnik give helpful examples of how to actually put this method into practice-- this is not just academic garble, but it's designed to actually be useful and helpful.
