In the village of Orland, Indiana, many residents voiced their abhorrence of the institution of slavery. Their active participation in the Underground Railroad and the blatant efforts of those who fostered the abolitionist cause, made the town a focal point of the movement in the 1850s. The arrest of five citizens who were caught moving slaves through Orland in 1853, thrust the community into the national spotlight. They had dared to defy a Federal mandate and the nation watched as they were arraigned in Federal court in Indianapolis. This history examines the events surrounding the arrests and depicts many of the players involved. The incidents in Orland acted as a catalyst that initiated subsequent abolitionist activities in the surrounding communities. These activities resulted in the formation of new antislavery societies that functioned until the beginning of the Civil War. Their endeavors are also outlined in this narrative. The story explores the relevant political events transpiring at the national, state, and local levels, as well as those within the abolitionist movement. The proponents of the movement in Orland received widespread notoriety in abolitionist circles for their brazen violation of the law and their known aversion to slavery. This notoriety, triggered by the Federal court case, brought some of the national leaders in the abolitionist ranks to Orland and to northeast Indiana to help with fund raising, organization, and education. These leaders included Stephen and Abby Kelly Foster, Josephine Griffing and Sojourner Truth. The history ends with the Civil War and how it affected the lives of these proponents of the movement. By the 1860s, many of the abolitionists were too old to participate in the conflict. However, their children took up arms and fought for these principles of freedom. The book is drawn from extensive resources and includes many photos and maps that add to the story. Local historian, Michael T. Biesiada, has created a telling story of the abolitionists’ struggle. The text weaves an exciting narrative of courage and conviction in northeastern Indiana in that turbulent antebellum era.

Great Stories About Antebellum Abolitionists

This book details the lives and stories of a small community of abolitionists that lived in towns along the Indiana/Michigan border in the 1840-60s and follows through all the way to their deaths after the civil war and into the 20th century. Importantly, it covers a pivotal early test of the Fugitive Slave Law where the law prosecuted nearby supporters of the Underground Railroad. (I won't reveal how the case ends up!) It sheds a lot of light onto the opinions and political positions of early settlers and church-going mid-westerners before the war .. and the spread of abolitionist ideals long before John Brown and Emancipation.

I enjoyed this book tremendously and anyone who has interest in the antebellum years, early settlers in Indiana, or the abolitionist movements will enjoy reading this book. The book is well researched and includes interesting photos, illustrations, and a wealth of citations.

A detailed story of a little-known Indiana community and its impact on the abolition of slavery

this topic is well-researched in this book by Mike Biesiada. It includes many references, including images of archived documents, photos from personal collections and family memorabilia. It is written in a conversational style, easy to read and interesting (not a boring account). We are reminded of the significant impact the small community of Orland, Indiana had on the period of time, contributing to the abolition of slavery. It is an appropriate read for this Black History month.

Beautiful Book, But Doesn't Live Up to It's Title

I thoroughly enjoyed looking at everything contained in Quentin Wilson's "The Ultimate Classic Car Book," but what it contains doesn't even come close to earning it the title, "Ultimate."

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good book and may well be worth your $18 (or whatever you can get it for "Used"). But as a person who owns a classic car and has been active in classic car circles for several years, a book doesn't earn the "Ultimate" designation when it doesn't include the bullet-nosed 1950 or '51 Studebaker, a 1913 Stutz, the Tucker, a '41 Lincoln Zephyr, a '55 Plymouth Belvedere, a '57 Chevy Nomad, or several others widely recognized as classics.

Yes, I realize that my little list there is heavily skewed to American cars, but Wilson's book is VERY heavily skewed to include more models than necessary from Rolls-Royce/Bentley, BMW, Datsun, MG, and a couple of others. Again, don't misunderstand -- those are all great cars that he has included. I simply don't think you can include so many of those, ignore other obvious classics that many of us would like to learn and see more about, and still call your book "Ultimate".

I know I'm obsessing a bit, but if I only had $20 to spend on such a book and bought it over the Internet, I would feel a little cheated upon seeing how much it leaves out. Just make sure you review it thoroughly above so that your expectations are on target.

Great Book For Any Car Enthusiast!

A great book for any classic car fan. Quentin Wilson shows his love for all classic cars by including the best from Europe, America, Japan, and even Australia! Unlike other British authors, Wilson recognizes cars from around the world, not just roadsters from Europe. Chargers and AC Cobras mingle with Aston Martins, Holden FXs, and the ever popular Ferraris and Lamborghinis. I highly recommend this book.

Great resource for writing care plans!

I'm in nursing school and our instructors had recommended a different book for writing our care plans. After a semester of trying to use the book they recommended, I noticed one of my friends using this book. I purchased it for this semester and couldn't be happier. It is an older edition but it is a great resource and exactly what I was looking for. Plus the price....come on!!

My instructor suggested I get All-in-One because it will serve me through my rotations (Med-Surg, Peds, OB and Psych.) I love this book! It is so much better than the one we were required to buy. It is the only care plan book I've seen that gives measurable outcomes, which are so helpful in practice, not just in writing the plans. The rationales are detailed and easy to understand, and I quickly find what I am looking for. Highly recommended!
