Passionate Love, But Heroine Needed To Be Toned Down A Bit

SMALL SPOILERS ALERT
This was the first "steamy" romance novel I've ever read, and I was a bit disappointed that the moment that the entire book (aka the passionate love scene between Libbie and Cougar) led up to a) was nearly at the end of the story and b) ended with bad feelings between Libbie and Cougar. And the bad feelings happened, or more so the hurt Libbie caused Cougar at any point in time in the book, was because of one thing: Her insufferable pride and stubborn heart. In Francine River's romance novel Redeeming Love, the stubbornness of Angel made sense. She was bitter because she was embittered by life and the horrible things that happened to her growing up as a child prostitute. Angel knew what it was like to be used by men for pleasure, and she became a shell of a woman, never revealing the brokenness inside of her as she hid behind stubbornness, anger, and bitterness. Sadly, that wasn't Elizabeth Winters at all. She was stubborn because of her horrible personality, hating the idea of being tied down to a man in a time where there really wasn't anything else for a woman. This caused for countless moments where you really felt annoyed with her, but you have to applaud Georgiana Gentry for writing Cougar to be just as stubborn and willful as Libbie so that the two strong forces can clash, instead of one completely tearing the other down the entire time. And Cougar had several moments of reason and clarity when he could have made Libbie's stubborn moments worse, but instead said nothing or said little.
Aside from Libbie's horribleness, I loved all the plot threads that we all KNEW would connect, and we were excited to see how they connected. They were done expertly well and were very satisfying once they played out. The plot twists, while hinted at and therefore not totally shocking, were still very cool to see. There were a few moments that I was upset that the whole idea of rape was downplayed and molded into something that wasn't a big deal, but a later happenstance brought the proper emotions towards such a horror, so it didn't turn out all bad.
So, in essence, this book was very enjoyable. I loved the history brought to life, giving us the sad details of the Battle of Cibecue Creek, the animosity between natives and non-natives, and the fact that people hired by the US government to send supplies to Native American reservations and tribal groups were crooked men who ended up selling the supplies to third parties, leaving the Native Americans without the provisions promised by the government that proclaimed peace towards the tribal groups. The irksome character that is Libbie was balanced by the equally strong-willed and passionate Cougar, and the story (while tedious in some parts because of Libbie) was exciting and lovely at the same time. While I would recommend Redeeming Love over this book any day, I loved the passion between Libbie and Cougar, but I loved the heart and spirit of Cougar all the more.

Really love reading Native American romance story! And this one is definitely one them...love the hero...He's strong, hot and sexy and what he want he took... Wow!

Excellent story, not the best for romance

Georgina Gentry is terrific about following true the historical events of our native ancestors. This story was no different. Very exciting, heart- gripping, and triumphant story for anyone who enjoys real Indian history.
I was disappointed in the romance part of the book. The leading woman does not even come around and show a bit of true affection towards the leading man (Cougar, Apache army scout) until the very last couple pages of the book. By then, I found myself wishing that Cougar would just dump her in the desert and move on with a better life. I personally enjoy reading about some happy times between a couple. There were none present in this story.
I still recommend the book. The story of the hero character, "Cougar", makes the whole thing worth while.
