As a follow-up to her memoir Five Men Who Broke My Heart, Shapiro turns from romantic train wrecks to nicotine addiction. Her struggle to end a two-pack-a-day problem will be familiar to anyone who's tried to kick the habit; her version of suffering includes eating too many lollipops, yelling at her husband and encountering writer's block. To make quitting easier, Shapiro visits a psychologist who specializes in addictions and finds herself both repulsed and drawn to his aggressive style, which involves following his advice without question for a year. And what do you know: after several months, Shapiro's cigarette cravings diminish—but she finds she's addicted to her therapy sessions and looks forward to them in the same way that a smoker thinks of her next drag. More seriously, the removal of Shapiro's literal smoke screen reveals aspects of her life—family and relationship issues—that she's neglected for decades. Writing this memoir was obviously cathartic for Shapiro, although reading it can be trying at times (e.g., her discourses on her other vices, like pot and caffeine, are quite long-winded). But Shapiro's wit and honesty elevate the work, and her sessions with her cool, intelligent psychologist capture all that's both absurd and mundane about such encounters.

Not much of a novel but probably a reasonable memoire

There's a group out there consisting mainly of men who like to watch women smoke, like to hear them talk about smoking, and like to read about their experiences, trials, pleasures, and problems with cigarettes. These people want to know all the details about what brand, the inhales, exhales, dangles, type of light up, etc. Multiple websites, videos, telephone chats, and even a newspaper are available (for a price, for a price). This book's first 100 pages holds that kind of interest for those kind of people. Along the way we learn all about how she smoked in high school and how she sparked up her Capri Menthols, Virginia Slims, and More lights. Alas, after Shapiro quit and becomes a Nicotine Nazi, she becomes far less interesting and toward the end of the journey a real shrew complaining about all the little pleasures that her friends and relatives are having drinking, eatting candy, cookies, fatty foods, coffee. Good grief! Do people like her really exist? If so, I would avoid them like the plague. The midplot squeeze is weak and boring and this character Winters (the therapist) makes little sense. He seems perfect in getting the patients to drop their dependencies on everything by transferring the dependency to him (for a price, for a price). Do New York therapists get $175 an hour for handing out this kind of hokum? Yes, they probably do and therefore this book succeeds as a sort of social document of the kind of life some desperately unhappy people do lead. The ennui of the book reflects the ennui of their lives and therefore the book is about the real New York scene. By the by, I don't think Shapiro was truly addicted to anything. She's obscessed with things, but addiction is a whole different kettle of fish according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Because you like to smoke, or drink, or eat certain foods does not mean you are addicted. The overwhelming situation is use of things (including alcohol, tobacco, and even drugs) and not abuse of things.

Amazing

I started this book on Friday and could not put it down, finished it on Sunday and felt sad when I hit the last page. As I began reading, I realized I would need paper and pencil to take notes to use in my own life. My whole life I've been surrounded by people who smoke and drink, and I made a conscious effort not to become one of "those people." But after I read this book, I realized I'm no better; that I have addictions of my own that have nothing to do with "controlled substances." This book sheds a lot of light on how to live through suffering so one can come out the other end feeling like a better person for it. Susan's writing is so down to earth that you will see yourself in her no matter who you are. Dr. Winters is a big player in the book, but it's the way Susan takes the wheel of her own life that makes you want to cheer for her and ask yourself why the hell you've waited so long to face what makes you "suffer" the most.

Dr. Winters said that underneath any addiction is a deep depression. Read it and find out what it means to you.

A fun, insightful, and challenging memoir by a New York writer who worked with a therapist to quit smoking. Along with quitting smoking, her therapist, Dr. Winters, helped her kick all self-medication and urged her to "sit with" and experience her emotions and feelings. It is a very interesting look at addiction recovery outside of the 12step paradigm. Highly recommended!

Ma sha Allah I Really recommend this book! The sister REALLY makes you feel special, happy and like your NOT doing "drudging" work. She makes you feel like it's a special task, a loving blessing al HamdulilAllah. It was Very easy to read and I did not feel like a "bad mom" or a "unorginized clutz" It made me feel normal and able to slowly incorportae these tips =)

Inspirational & thoughtful read

This is such an inspirational read, mashallah. I keep it by my bedside along with Ameera's other homemaking book to reread often. It covers being a modest Muslimah, making the home, being a wife, being a mother, being a techer, and so much more - but above all, being a servant to Allah subhana wa ta’alah. Every topic is written in the perspective of Islam with hadiths, vereses, and stories and I absolutely love that - this is such a beautiful and rare gem for the Muslimah home maker. Ameera speaks of the spiritual benefits of our work and how our family is a blessing from Allah.. She truly has a passion for being a home maker and it shows in every single word she writes. She has definitely changed my attitude of thinking, especially her writings on being grateful and positive. I really feel this book has made a difference in my life, alhumdulillah. I highly recommend this book, along with her other writings.

Eric is one of the foremost authors, trainers & consultants on the use of project management tools from Microsoft. A Very Useful Book

It will quickly become obvious that the author of "Forecast Scheduling" is a Microsoft Project expert. The book's content is detail rich. That content is organized in a manner consistent with the widely recognized steps of schedule construction and maintenance. We can use this book for reference, brush up on rusty technique, self study (whole or part) or classroom learning. Whatever our approach, "Forecast Scheduling With Microsoft Project 2010" is a very useful book

Throughout this book, the perspective is that of a project manager who needs a schedule that is sufficient for control and as automated as possible for easy maintenance. To be sufficient for control, a schedule must continually present accurate, current variance data, as well as present an accurate forecast of future milestone(s) variance. (Hence the book title "Forecast Scheduling".) Automation requires the schedule be network diagram based, have a Work Breakdown Structure, be resource loaded and balanced, have a baseline created and have performance data (actuals) regularly applied. The book shows how to do all this and more.

There are helpful descriptions of how Microsoft Project 2010 features work. Strengths and weaknesses of the tool are presented. Best scheduling practices are noted. There are frequent tips regarding the use of Microsoft Project. And there are quizzes at the end of chapters.

This book is consistent with the Project Management Institute's PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge). It is integrated with those PMBOK processes that relate to scheduling. While good planning advice is provided, the focus is on building schedules suitable for control.

I have long recommended Eric Uyttewaal's earlier books to my clients - either for reference or self study. I highly recommend this edition. I must note that Eric's books have never let me down.

Project Manager's guide to effective scheduling

Forecast Scheduling is a must read for project managers that want to effectively plan and manage their project schedules. This book is much more than a Microsoft Project users guide or manual, it is a project manager's guide to an effective project management process. It incorporates project management methodology, as well as a lot of insight into scheduling theory gained through experience in executing projects.

Forecast Scheduling was written for the project manager from the perspective of a project manager managing their project schedule using Microsoft Project instead of the standard Microsoft Project books which explain the features and options of the software without the integration to the project manager's tasks. Also, unlike other Microsoft Project books which only cover the features of the product, Forecast Scheduling presents solutions to deficiencies in the scheduling logic behind Microsoft Project; specifically in the areas of Critical Path identification and Resource Critical Paths.

Extensive checklists and tools are provided throughout the book and summarized at the end. These checklists help the user verify that his/her schedule will not only model the project at the beginning of the project but will easily adjust with the actual project activity throughout the project. The project manager will be better able to adjust to changes along the way, anticipate problems that may occur and to determine the best mitigation option before the problem occurs.

Neat reference book on Project Management and MS Project 2010

Eric Uyttewaal's Forecast Scheduling with Microsoft Project 2010 is a neat reference book on Project Management and, certainly, a good guide for exploiting productively the tool of choice as soon as the installation is ready. It is also used as a textbook for learning PM fundamentals and MS Project (be it the Standard or Professional version or the Server capability) as well.

Mr. Uyttewaal credentials are impressive, both as a practitioner in large-scale real-life projects and as a guiding force of the PM community. And it shows; the book is full of no-nonsense advice beyond the peremptory menus and options descriptions. Each chapter is a combination of theoretical positioning, step by step instructions and discussion of common and rare practical issues. Not only alternative solutions are presented but their relative merits and demerits are analyzed so that the reader can choose the most adequate to her current needs. I particularly enjoyed the discussion on time buffers and their (in) visibility to managers. All the examples are illustrated with clean screenshots and you can easily follow the flow of the text or move backwards to review previous material.

The book is organized along the whole lifecycle of a project, stressing the planning/scheduling commitment (chapters 3 to 8) that is at the heart of the approach of ProjectPro, the company headed by Uyttewaal. The author favors a special view of project planning based on taking full account of the power of forecast scheduling.

Even if Earned Value is not the author preferred methodology, it is also dealt with, explicitly acknowledging that is a market requirement.

At the end of each chapter, the reader will find the corresponding review questions, plus a set of exercises that illustrate the methodology through a running example of a relocation project. The solutions can be checked against several mpp files downloadable for free at the ProjectPro website.
The book ends with a checklist summing up its lessons that help the project manager to find out if she has crafted a "valid, dynamic and robust model". The website also provides filters to verify the quality of schedules as well as several examples of schedules certified by ProjectPro in accordance with the best practices discussed in the text.

Gotta love Berenstain Bears!

The illustrations are just as I pictured and remembered as a child. I loved the Berenstain Bears as a child and now love them for my daughter who also loves them! They are fun to read and they teach good morals to live by.

WHO doesn't love the Berenstain Bears!? These are household favorites! And there seems to be one for almost every occasion. I get them for my kids as the situation calls for it. First day of school, Too much TV, Chores, New Baby, easing..... you name it. My 4 yr old is going to be getting a few of these for Christmas this year!! Cause Santa knows what's up!! ;)

My family really loves the Berenstain Bears collection. The kids really enjoy the hearing the stories at night before bed. My wife and I really enjoy the fact the book is entertaining and educational. Each book shares a nice life lesson that's important and easy to understand. They aren't so long that the kids lose interest, but they are long enough to help the kids settle down at night. I would recommend these stories for kids 4-10.

Lil guy loves this book!

My son is almost 3. When this book came, he took it from me as soon as I opened it (as he always does when I get him a new book). He brings it to me all the time to read it to him, he carries it around with him everywhere. It's been with us to the grocery store and my dr appts. He absolutely loves this book, he counts the "chicks" as he calls them and tells me all about the broken eggs. He's big time into this book, I hope he likes it for a long time. It's adorable!

Good rhythm, my daughter loves it

We just got this book a few days ago, and already my daughter (age 2.5) has made my wife and I read this book at least 15 times. The book is about a mother bird's quest to feed her seven children. The books counts the number of hungry children at each step, records mama's food finding mission for one of them, and repeats, effectively counting down from 7 to 1. It has the standard repetition elements that small children and toddlers love, along with brightly colored and attractive pictures. The book has an excellent meter and rhyming scheme to it which makes it very attractive to younger children.

The only reason that it didn't get 5 stars is a consistent complaint of mine about children's books - they frequently portray the family unit in a very stereotypical and unfair fashion. After mama bird is done, it is revealed that daddy bird was sitting there the whole time without raising a feather. (The only thing missing from his pose in the book was a TV and a beer can). Frankly this consistently portrayed stereotype of the how the family functions is unfair to both mothers and fathers, not to mention the children who are learning from it. I don't want this review to focus on this since it's a larger problem so I'll end here, I just wanted to explain the "missing" fifth star.

A bit on the long side, with unusual flow.

Seven Hungry Babies is a relatively middle of the road counting story for toddlers.

The artwork is not particularly impressive (or lacking), though the bright primary colors should help to hold the attention of very young children. The quality of the book itself is on the better side of what I'm used to, and the pages don't rip too easily when my 2 year-old gets "grabby".

The flow of the story is a bit strange, in that some parts rhyme and some don't. Unlike most books for this age group, it isn't one where you can easily disengage your brain when reading it aloud.

I won't give away the shock ending here, but the story itself is pretty ho-hum, and has been done many, many times before (e.g. Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed).

About the Author
Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai (1912 1999) was a Malayali novelist and short story writer whose work focused on the oppressed classes. His best-known works include Kayar and Chemmeen. He won the Kendra Sahitya Academy award in 1958 and the Jnanpith award in 1984. Anita Nair is the author of The Better Man, Ladies Coup�, Mistress and Lessons in Forgetting. Her books have been translated into thirty languages all over the world.

Chemmeen- Fishermen and Mother Ocean Story

Award-winning book and later movie released 1965, `Chemmeen' was technologically advanced for its times. The photography was the best aspect of the whole film. The story line is tragic and is a soap opera type of theme about the pre-marital and later extra marital affair between a girl from the fishing community of Kerala and a Muslim fisherman. The movie has a tragic end. The actors did an excellent job. The music was superb. The movie won international awards and was later dubbed into English with the title `Anger of the Sea'.

The author really learned the culture, tradition, and practices of the fishermen community and incorporated them brilliantly into his novel. As a result, Chemmeen is a cultural, sociological, psychological, and scientific look at this community, and their belief systems as it existed in the 1950s Kerala.
